Fox-20 -- The Harsh War

Good ol' Louis never learns.... with a army invading and he's researching Aestethics

This is going high speed to a good end..... just continue pressing Louis ( he looks to be the strongest of the survivors )

We need more troops to kill Louis, he has a lot of cat/axe/horse, so except when they are in cities, it is difficult to have very good odds for the first battle.

I would build mainly trebuchets and pikes until CS, then a few maces

Jabah

Ah, I'm up. Got it. Looks like we're pushing forward with the war.

Circled through our cities and MM a little. We went from -3 gpt to +5 gpt at 40%.

Auto-razed Giza losing a Gaellic at 99.1% . Hmmm, it says there are partizans but I don't see any ...

Civ4ScreenShot0000-38.jpg

Auto-razed Byblos, no loss. This time partizans are plenty.

Civ4ScreenShot0001-37.jpg

CS came in, I switched to Bureaucracy, set research to Med heading towards Feudalism at 0% science. We're at +75 gpt and 79 turns for Med.

Civ4ScreenShot0002-38.jpg

Got a good event at the capital.

Civ4ScreenShot0003-37.jpg

Orleans is still too heavily defended. I'm bypassing it and hopefully get Paris instead.

Civ4ScreenShot0004-32.jpg

Louis has a stack heading out for our land.

Civ4ScreenShot0005-25.jpg

Razed Elephantine, no loss.

Civ4ScreenShot0006-20.jpg

Razed Paris losing a pult at 80%

Civ4ScreenShot0007-17.jpg

I stopped here. I have a stack building up at Gergorvia.

Civ4ScreenShot0008-14.jpg

Here's our Egyptian stack heading towards Alexandria.

Civ4ScreenShot0009-12.jpg

And here's our French stack. Our French stack seems like it needs the re-enforcement more than our Egyptian stack.

Civ4ScreenShot0010-10.jpg

Our spies are fog-busting both French and Egyptian lands nicely.

Civ4ScreenShot0011-8.jpg

Every city we razed has partizans, but oddly enough you don't see the partizans about half the time.

The spies could try to steal some (cheap) tech in France (just need to find one of the cheapest place for that), as we could build some temples for WW (for exemple if we steal the proper tech)

Or to stage revolt in those cities that we are abt to attack ... this automatically removes the city's cultural defense and injure the occupants by 30%.

If you read carefully, there are two different Partisans event message: one is the citizens are "taking to the surrounding countryside", the other is the citizens are "fleeing towards the capitol". For the former, the Partisan units would appear around the razed city. For the latter, the partisan units would appear in the capitol.

Got it.

Spy induced revolts do not hurt the defenders.....

I agree with the idea of spending the EE that we have on louis... we won't need it when he's dead.

Our French stack needs to be reinforced badly..... Maybe a second french stack would be useful? BTW if we remove metals from louis, things will be far easier.

Spy for revolt : they do remove the defensive bonus for a turn, but the units inside are not injured (so it is usefull especially when inside a castle but not as much as you were hoping).

Louis was using [edit : mainly :)] cat/horse stack, which doesn't need metal, and a pain to attack (since we have no unit with very good odds against both).

Look closely jabah: there is a sword in there.... This only means we need extra pikes and cats. even swords vs pikes is not that dificult ( especially a shock one ).

Well, the game is in the bag anyway... the only thing that is delaying us is the logistics.

Nice combat work :goodjob:

I would have hit that juicy (mostly defenseless) stack in Orleans, but not a biggie.

If GreyFox feels the need to whip some malcontents into units, I won't complain :p

Ow... I seems to be the only one who doesn't know that spy-instigated revolts doesn't injure the defenders ... :hammer2: ... this goes to shows my tremendous (in)experience in espionage. :crazyeye: In that case, let's concentrate on stealing techs.

Orleans seems relatively undefended ... but the problem with only one stack is that whichever city you move towards, the defenders would be shifted accordingly. The AI are quite adept in this regards. And we are unwilling to pillage the roads (in order to use them later).

So, the only way is to bring two stacks ... and in an attempt to do that, we meet the Loius stack:

Fox20-AD1280-loius-stack.jpg

You would think that "Ha! only a sword has terrain defense. Should be easy picking!", right?

Wrong! :aargh: The RNG decides to kill off my two maces without a scratch on the bl00dy sword. Darn! The stack was later decimated (I meant Loius, not ours!!!), but it also set back my plans of having a main stack devouring cities while another stack lure the french to defend another city. This means that I was only able to bring a second stack right at the end of my turnset, and it also means we would be facing longbows instead.

Fox20-AD1320-forces-french.jpg

But I think the tatics would work. The main French defenders are all crowded in Orleans, while our new stack is facing little resistance in Djon.

One thing though is I think we settled too much military instructors. We need some medics in the field, and so, here we go:

Fox20-AD1315-General.jpg

He is now in the stack outside Djon.

Now, for my espionage practice: I bring research up to get Mediation ... that will unlock Priesthood for our spy to steal:

Fox20-AD1280-steal.jpg

Da-da! Bingo! Sweet. The bad thing is the spy is teleported back to our capitol, and has to repeat its long journey back to France. The good thing is we have two more spies up front

After Priesthood, I pumped up our research to get Monarchy in, as the French is researching Feudalism for us :)

Fox20-AD1320-Monarchy.jpg

So, I turned off research and instead pump up the espionage slider next. We should be able to steal Feudalism next turn or so.

As to Hatty, she got a good ramming and spanking from us.

Fox20-AD1280-Alexandria.jpg

Fox20-AD1310-Memphis.jpg

One funny thing is how the hell did this warrior appear behind our lines? A freaking paratrooper?

Fox20-AD1305-hatty-warrior.jpg

At the end, our troops are heading to Thebes. Egypt should fall simply with this stack of troop:

Fox20-AD1320-forces-eygpt.jpg

So all reinforcement should go south towards France. Let's just hope that Loius don't get machinery too soon ... crossbows would be a PITA.

Nicely done, Fox :goodjob:

Is that another egyptian city to the northwest on the last pix? or is it a remnant of a city in ruins?

I'll not lose a oportunity to :whipped: Mr Fox  :

If you keep the spy unmoved for 5 turns in the city you want to steal a tech, you'll get a 50% discount on the used EP ( 10 % for each turn )....

Besides it all looks that is going well... Hatty will be gone in 2 turnsets and louis is not a match to us.

Nice razing.
Always funny to see the egyptian partisan - warriors : free XP fro all!

I will be away from computers (Civ4 & internet) for a long WE between the Thursday 8th and Monday 12th (both included).

Jabah

@berserks: I think it's left over border in the fog, not sure.

@r_rolo1: who tell you I moved the spy? one spy is kept fixed in a french city, for more than 5 turns now. For the first one, Priesthood is so cheap its simply not worth the wait (besides, 10% is good enough :D).

@Ozzy: So I presume you are going to play and report before Thursday (meaning you have only 1 day).

Good progress, I don't see any surprises on the horizon.

The real question is whether Ozbenno and Rolo will wrap this up before I get a last turnset :p

I don't think so... hatty will need at leat 20 turns to mop up, Louis roughly 50-60 by my not too reliable accounts ;) . i think you'll have the honor of wrapping this :p
