Fox-20 -- The Harsh War

I still think markets are more needed than courthouse for economy recovery and more needed than extra trooops as well for a while (if we have finished currency that is).

Markets would be good in our commerce cities -- furs give +1 happy with markets as well (useful for Bibracte, IIRC). They could be whipped at happiness neutrality as well.

We've settled the first two GGs as military instructors -- I would have preferred using the second one as a super-medic. Healing will soon be a bottleneck for our armies march of destruction, so the third GG should definitely be attached as a healing warlord, imo.

That reminds me of something I forgot. Our army at Persia has a Combat 4 Gaelic that can be used as the medic there and there's a Combat 4 axe by Tenochtitlan that can join up with our forming army by Gergovia to be their medic

Hmmm ... photobucket is down ... been waiting for the whole day for it to come back up to no avail, so I have to try ImageShack. Hopes it works.

First, the improvement gripes ...

fox20ad0175improvementsfz4.jpg

Look at Bibracte. We have a wheats and a deer camp not worked on ...the point of a tundra farm eludes me. At Vienne, we already have a unworked deer camp and lacks a cottage on a worked plains ... why are the workers still looking longingly at the western deers?

There are other important stuff to work on.

Also, seeing that we are close to bankrupt at 10% science, I suspended a few cats build ... but I still think we need spears. So, I swapped some to spear production. Indeed ... here is the reason I have been b!tching about spears:

fox20ad0265hattywarcharns4.jpg

On military front, we can't afford to send out anymore troops before we get our economy better. So, Japan remains unharrassed while we wait for currency to arrive and some cottages to mature.

While waiting, two events of interest. First, a barb city appears at Jabah's prime site:

fox20ad0205barbcitysz1.jpg

This might mean we have to send some troops to clear the barb if we need to send reinforcement to our frontline in Persia.

Second, is the health event:

fox20ad0235eventck1.jpg

Thank you very much, but I think we have more than enough health in a Borreal map, so I rather keep my cities happy. Note to next player: The temporary happy face will disappear in 4 turns

Finally, currency is in.

fox20ad0265currencyfe0.jpg

The extra trade route did not boost our economy by much, so our hope will be for markets to do the trick. Good thing about market is that it will add one more happy from furs.

I go for the Persian city in an attempt to reduc eour support cost .. but only manage to throw away two cats.

Hmm ...

fox20ad0280persianwy7.jpg

The Partisans ignored our stack, so they proceeded SW to the (hopefully last) city of Cyrus:

fox20ad0325persiancitybp3.jpg

I think we have enough money after the razing of Persian capital, so it's time to move our troops at the NE to pay Tokugawa a visit.

The 'tundra' farm (as well as the ones at 3gems-fish-wheat and Gergovia) were marks to remind everyone not to cottage there as they are needed to bring irrigation (with CS) to some farmed wheat further away (since bibracte and Gergovia are on hills and not counting for irrigation path)...
Should have specify that as they are not needed right now but in 20t (optimistic view ?)
Next time I will put a 'farm for water' mark instead (should not be too long)

It's not my fault those workers are so darned slow  If they'd been a little faster, I wouldn't have to endure the Fox :whipped: :p

And Jabah is right about bringing the irrigation in with those farms.

Nice turns, I'd head over and finish off the Japanese after Persian destruction.

Presumably Hatsh is in the NE? It might be good to get a sense of her technological prowess fairly soon.

I start up some markets as we finish builds.

2 gems on-line at Camulodunum bring us even at 20% :goodjob:

Louis shows up with 2 chariots and an archer. Bye bye.

I move against Kyoto and Ecbatana.

Lose a catapult in Kyoto and 2 cats and 2 gallics at Ecbatana and Cyrus is destroyed.

I'll leave it here as this is all the time I have, sorry. Hey Ricardo, look what I left you

Softened up with a catapult. We should be able to get some troops out of the capital and surrounds quickly to deal with this.

The Toko forces should be on his last city in 2 turns, hopefully there isn't much there.

Code of Laws in 4 turns.

Good job getting Cyrus and (almost) Toku out of our map.

Since we have (lots of) cash, why not set research to 100% to finish CoL in 2t instead of 4 and start Courthouse asap. And also then reset research back to stable or positive (30% ?).
Any reasons (except keeping a bit of cash -not 300- for random events) not to deficit research such tech as CoL.

Nota, not a big deal since most of this cash came from the last 2 razing, so this turn and the previous one. (so it is unlikely that we could have shaved another extra turn switching to full research earlier).

Jabah

Ps I might have kept the cat from softening Louis stack, since it mainly will gain us a turn or two while they are healing, but I don't see us killing the stack here right now.
I think we could (should?) just shadow this stack and kill it under Gergovia walls (to bad it is not a roman stack for history, just remember not to fight around Alesia :))

Ok , got it....

Some Louis killing and finish the Japanese, right?

About courthouses, should we whip them fast or it is not worth it?

BTW, where to put next city ( not likely in my turnset, but I could start the settler if needed ). jabah's spot looks good , but a city in the japan istmus would help defense as well. And the double seafood would give more revenue with smaller maintenance fee.....

The japanese istmus is quite nicely defended at Gergovia (a bit far away).
The 'Maoi' city will secure our SE while having most of its citizen working on un-pillage tiles.

Whipping Courthouse : yes for cities with lots of food. Unfortunatly we have some with very few extra food (but with high production so it is less a problem to build them)

Agreed.

If we get a GP now might be a good time to fire off a golden age: we have a strangle hold on the game so no point in saving them for later.

Just a small question: I got home now ( after some tennis with my little sis and a dinner out ) and checked the save... I agree in running 100% until CoL is done ( BTW we'll found Confu most surely ), but what to research next?

I see 2 options : CS and MC. CS would give us the possibility of irrigating some wheats and it is a stepping stone to maces. MC gives Forges ( no :health: problems in this map ) that with gems = :) and boostes prod, and it is needed for maces as well. Besides that, Collosus is still open ( Louis has MC, so it is a long shot... but having the Collosus would be extremely helpful for us ).

I'm for MC... forges will help us much more than some irrigation ATM. Opinions ?

I'm inclined towards MC as well ... besides all the points Ozzy mention, MC is cheaper, so will be in faster. And MC unlocks a building, CS unlocks none. Having building is better since we can build something other than troops which will increase our support cost. Bureaucracy OTOH is always welcomed ...

Started by pushing the slider to 100% and seeing the spear/catapult duo going down ( thanks Mr Oz ).... 2 turns later:

Civ4ScreenShot0007.jpg

Research set in MC.

I was preparing to move to Japan when the Egyptians decided to walk on by... as they were in unforested terrain it was a easy mop up ( no units down ):
Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0008.jpg

Finally the French got to our border... too bad for him that we were pretty much prepared ..... drill II cats are beautiful for this kind of job.
Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0009.jpg

No units down in first strike, lost a chariot dislodging that late axe ( bad dice roll )

Hatty continued to send units... but I was already delaying the attack on japan too much. Sorry mr archer, but I have bigger Fish to fry....
Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0010.jpg

Civ4ScreenShot0011.jpg

All the french killing gave us a GG... as Gergovia seems to be our future near the front unit pump ( BTW we need to discuss next city placement ) I decided to settle it there.
Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0012.jpg

Japan faced the inevitable... but I needed 3 turns of bombarding ( wall ) and 2 turns to clean out the garrison ( by 1 warrior ... ). Lost 2 cats in the process
Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0013.jpg

Civ4ScreenShot0015.jpg

BTW japan got the deer camp event some turns before it died... right under our soldiers feet  We should consider settling Osaka spot in the future ( if the game take that long ..... )

Finally we discovered Egypt
Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0016.jpg

It is a recent pop, so it should be a border city.... This means that the Ex-Japan choke will be the prefered spot for both Louis and Hatty attacks....

MC in, started Machinery... x-bows and windmills >>>> irrigation IMHO
Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0017.jpg

Louis didn't failed on us... he made collosus .
Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0018.jpg

As much that I like having wonders, I prefer that he continues to pile wonders and not units.

The barb city that was blocking Jabah's Moai spot is no more....
Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0019.jpg

Ladies and gentlemen, Probably a sign of progress.... our first unhealthy city
Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0020.jpg

And to end, the chef's sugestion for later meals....
Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0021.jpg

On more serious businesses, I called the troops home ,because of maintenance fees, to heal and reinforce and because Louis power is still bigger than ours... from my BtS experience in AW ,this means that he might be preparing a big SOD.... no big worries so far, because he has not Construction yet. But it is clearly a thing to keep in mind.

We are running a sustained 30 % ATM ( -1 in 40% ....the game goes with 100% but for no particular reason ).... Machinery should be in in roughly 9-10 turns. After that is time for CS most surely.

Tolosa is recovering from the whip and it is working max food. Change that in next turn when the city grows and work the gems and the furs ( or the iron ).

Capital will spit a settler in 3 turns. I'm divided between Jabah's Moai spot and somewhere in the Ex- Japan choke area ( whatever the place, don't forget to chop the woods below ). Jabah's city would add much more to the empire, but given that most french and Egyptian counter strikes will be in the Gergovia area, a city there could be useful in military terms.

The game is pretty much controlled and we can start working on killing Hatty pretty soon ( most of our cities is finishing infra and can make some more cats/new and shiny X-bows in 1 - 2 turns ).

Got it.

Looks like good turns, I'm amazed that we have only two opponents left. I like your choice of Machinery, I'll probably head to CS next. Engineering may be the last military tech we'll need

I wouldn't have sent the army home, but I can fix that :mischief:

I'll open the save in about 5-6 hours -- if there is no major decision points I'll play then too. Any sign of Longbows yet?
