Fox10 - The Real Thing

But if you're on land, isn't the rest of your stack going to be vulnerable since we have 1 move units? Or do we evacuate everything first except the moral unit on the last turn and attack, then flee to the boat?

Lurker's comment:
There isn't any ideal solution, really. If you attack from land, expect to see lots of knights/Cuirassiers/cavalry attack your stack after razing the city (in addition to the partisans that spawned around it). Bring lots of stack defenders. On the other hand, when attacking from the sea, be prepared to lose the final attacker whilst the rest of the stack remains safely on board -- bring lots of expendable "city liberators", one for each city, in that case.

I got it. We cant afford to lose any units. Attacking from land and having a morale unit is the best way to have more survivable units. If I can get a GG during my turnset, Ill make a Woody3 morale unit. I took a quick look at the save and we seem to be in for some hard times ahead.

I doubt you are going to generate 180+ exp in your turnset ... but let's see. ;)

@Shyuhe: the idea is our stack (comprising of rifles) should be able to survive whatever attack the partisans can give much better than a single lone unit.

But since we do not have a morale unit yet, this is moot. Right now it is either option of what Lekdevil has outlined. Sacrifice the last attacker or land stack attack. Each has its cons.

The land stack will entails attacking a city until the last defender. If we still have 6~7 unmoved attacker, then raze the city and move the rest of the unmoved units to protect the last defender. If we do not, then let the city survive and try again the next turn. Lekdevil has already described its cons.

The naval attack not only sacrifices the last unit, but we suffer 50% amphibious penalty as well. So a bad roll might cause more units to die.

Looked at the save ... I must say some things are not very optimal.

(1) we built 3 forts, we should have spread the airships among them for the largest air coverage area.

(2) while we want destroyers as soon as possible, since we can't have it until plastic is in, it is much better to go for plastics first rather than combustion, since we will snag assembly line and industrialism along the way. Please change research accordingly (haven't I said please stop at logical decision point rather than at "whole" numbered turns?). Although railroads would gain us machine guns, but I think infantries might be better.

(3) Merchants everywhere. Hmm .. but I see we are having only +1 gpt @100%, so its okay.

(4) The stack we have at India is pitiful .. no rifleman protection? We need to retract them as soon as possible, and double its size with riflemen before trying to land again.

Good thing abt settling the last GG (I always see things from the bright side) is we would have +11 exp units fresh out of the gate. That means CR3 arties or pinch/formation promoted rifles/infantries.

Good luck, Cable. You need it. :D

Indeed, this game is looking like it's rapidly spiraling out of control. I get your argument about the moral unit Fox. Sounds good. Tech wise, plastics first also sounds like a good idea. HOpefully the AI won't get too many frigates before we can get destroyers...

Joke
Spoiler :
A few days after Christmas, a mother was working in the kitchen listening to her young son playing with his new electric choo choo train in the living room. She heard the train stop and her son said, “All of you sons of biznitches who want off, get the hell off now, cause this is the last stop! And all of you sons of biznitches who are getting on, get your asses in the train, cause we’re going down the tracks.”

The mother went nuts and told her son, “We don’t use that kind of language in this house. Now I want you to go to your room and you are to stay there for two hours. When you come out, you may play with your train, but I want you to use nice language.”

Two hours later, the son comes out of the bedroom and resumes playing with his train. Soon the train stopped and the mother heard her son say, “All passengers who are disembarking from the train, please remember to take all of your belongings with you. We thank you for riding with us today and hope your trip was a pleasant one. We hope you will ride with us again soon.” She hears the little boy continue, “For those of you just boarding, we ask you to stow all of your hand luggage under your seat. Remember, there is no smoking on the train. We hope you will have a pleasant and relaxing journey with us today.”

As the mother began to smile, the child added, “For those of you pissed about the two hour delay, please see the hobag in the kitchen.”

Greyfox, I wish i would have looked at your comments before playing. I finished the research on Railroads...why, I dont know. I should have started the Infantry path.

Turn 375 1730AD Preturn
This is whats left of the stack in India.

I guess the plan was to heal them up and keep attacking. Ill try to bring back reinforcements.

376--->Gilly moves a stack to our coast, but does not unload. It gets obliterated.

377--->The stack in India will prolly be destroyed.

I reverse the fleet that had dropped them off in the hopes I can rescue them.

378--->That India stack gets destroyed. What a friggin waste. 4 CR2 Grennys gone. Not having a decent medic, not having enough units, and not having a morale unit doomed this stack. It feels like we are starting from scratch now. Heres our total units now...pretty pathetic. We are a gazillion miles from the next GG.

383--->I land a small army at Zara. We can't attack the big boys yet, but at least we can get some money and XP's while building up

385--->RR comes in, Nationalism next heading to Infantry. I raze Gondor and get that weird bug that razes another city of his. Zara id down to 2 cities on an island.

386--->We get a scientist who is merged. I spot a stack from Cyrus. It gets killed within 2 turns.

389--->Nationalism in, combustion chosen next.

The save
http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/97311/Fox10_AD-1758.CivBeyondSwordSave

City shot

I can get 2 artillery out in 3 turns with overflow. We could take out Zaras last 2 cities while still building up for the big boys.

I want to remind whoever.....when we finally do get a GG and use him for a woodsman 3 + morale unit that when attacking a city on a hill, dont use him as the last attacker. He wont get another move after he attacks. Make sure you have a Guerilla 2......that unit gets double movement in hills. He can attack the last attacker in a hill city and get back to the stack.

Also, make sure you are using every arty in the stack to get as many XP's as possible.

woodsman 3 + morale gives you a 15% healing medic with 1 extra move. You can get a Guerrila 2 with just 2 promotions from any unit. I would attach a GG to a grenadier rather than a Rifleman. Because the grenadier has less strength, it prolly wont defend. I wish we could attach him to a maceman or a pikeman. Sometimes the computer will make a general defend even with stronger defenders on hand.

Woodsman3 + morale was a brilliant idea. I've named him woodie. Be careful with my woodie. I'll count that as my joke and go on to the set:

Inherited turn - everything looks good. We have serious cash flow problems but not much to do about that.

Turn 393 - I raze the Ethiopian island city. Partisans (maces) arise in arms.

Turn 394 - Constitution is done.

Turn 397 - Corporations is done.

somewhere in here, I razed the other Ethiopian island city but forgot to write down the turn #

Turn 407: Raze a Sumerian city near the Indian border. Rifles arise in arms.

Turn 410 - AL is in (finally!). I also raze Madras this turn.

I've lost 2 artillery in the attacking stack so far. Otherwise the pickings are good. I think the two machine guns are scaring off any counter attacks right now so I'd heal up a turn or two before marching to the next city. Interestingly enough, I think Gandhi may actually be trying for a cultural victory. Delhi has over 40k culture  As long as our current stack can raze Delhi, his dreams of a culture victory should be over (and we should be able to deal a serious blow to him in the process).

Gandhi only has one oil resource to the south. Shaka has none as far as I can tell, Zara is not a factor, and Churchill is also incredibly backwards. Cyrus has one on an island to the south but he's still far from oil based units. Gilgamesh (threat #2) has two sources. As long as we keep our losses to a minimum (CR3 artillery definitely do the work here), we should be able to continue our attack for at least another 2-3 cities. Gandhi did gather a stack of cavalry (5-6 ish) in Madras but I took them out before he could attack with them. And I'll echo Cabledawg's comment earlier: Woodie for non-hill cities, guerilla3 for hill cities as the finishing attacker. We can't afford losing units to random partisans. We can always take them out later in cities as they don't have any CG promotions.

Some beauty:

You guys know how the Civ4 events message system is cluttering the UI ... so normally people don't read it too carefully. So when I saw this event message, I was thinking WTF? Have to open up the event log to double check, and I had a good laugh. This constitute my joke for this report :D

Spoiler :

I didn't read the strike-out words at first glance, and was thinking: "huh? WTF? I sure agree!"

Razed the Indian city:

Geez!? A measly 7 gold!!!??? The bald bloke is sure broke!

We got a scientists, and Gandhi apparently too embarrassed with the 7 gold pillage, added more raze money to Delhi as compensation.

Goodjob, baldy!

And Persians seems to be the most advance in naval tech, the first AI to feature Ship-of-Line.

Maybe it's time we pay him a visit with our arties and infantries. The vessels were of-course sank, thanks to the airships.

1824 seems a good time to stop, as we are 1 turn away from electricity. Plus the next player can choose to attack Delhi, or heal one more turn.

See how many wonders you can identify in Delhi.

The ships west of Delhi transported these troops to Delhi, and are now trying to go back home westward (but now I regretted, since that means they would pass through Persian sea, which may see more Ship-of-Lines).

I also have a second stack in Summerian, mostly pillaging the cottages.

Oh, by the way, ignore the two signs. Those are left from previous player, I forgot to remove them

I had also chopped the forest. Yes, sue me, Green Peace. I think having 3 more food is better, which will add 2 specialists. (forest only give 1).

And I want to gripe at Ozzy again for not giving river access to our capitol. We also lose out on hammers since we are unable to build the hydro plant and the levees. :gripe:

Geez, if I'd known you were such a bunch of wimps, I would have made the save at Settler difficulty with 6 health sources and 4 gems in your BFC. :p

No coal plant, no hydro plant, no nuclear plant....jeez...we cant power our factory. I can ever remember a game where ive popped uranium from a mine....is that possible?

Ive a suggestion. When we believe that ghandhi is no longer a threat, maybe we should move on to the next superpower....or at least take out the 2 top cities of each civ. We need to slow their research down.

First of all, my joke:

Spoiler :
And they thought he was a trustworthy member of the team...
Spoiler :

My turnset went very well. I'm very confident we#re in a good position to win this. Some proof:

Battle Stats:
Units victorious while attacking : 64
Units victorious while defending : 4
Units defeated while attacking : 4
Units defeated while defending : 2

Most of those lost units were at 90+% odds  , and some of them were only ships. The AI has nothing to match our Infantry+Arty yet.

I began with bringing down Delhi's garrison to just one defender. I could have killed the Axe too but that would have left the attacker alone - Delhi is not on a hill. So I healed up and waited for reinforcements of Gandhi.

He did reinforce the city, but those units were killed off quick. Finally I found a 3rd way of ensuring your attacker can move back to the stack: The seldom used Commando promotion...

Delhi was razed. The Partisans fled to the Capital however as they heard of our mighty Machine Guns. At home a GG was born. I used him to make another Guerilla III + Morale unit for attacking hill cities in Cyrus' lands...

In Gandhi's territory we marched onto Bombay, the Jewish holy city, after some healing. Here it is:

We got a ridiculous event (hey, our Quechua has something to do for the 2nd time in this game):

We razed Bombay, again using the Commando guy (we now have two of em in this stack).

Tornadoes destroyed one of our forts, we didn't lose the Airship luckily.

As industrialism came in I thought it would be a good point to stop. I've picked Combustion (10 turns) for opening up Plastics at last. We now can field Marines.

In Indian territory we're on the verge of of razing Varanasi (have fun next player). The stack is somewhat short of Artillery, but should be able to raze at least 2 more cities. I advise to head southwest after Varanasi as the coastal city down there holds the Statue of Liberty.

I thought it was time to stick it to Cyrus too. We unleashed our troops on Pasagarde.

Please notice before attacking that we can reach the city with Airships, so fly some air strikes. They won't do that much damage as bombers of course, but every scratch on the top notch defenders helps.
