I have other free programs for anti-virus and anti-spyware stuff, but I don't have any free firewall applications because I have service pack 2 for Windows XP and a Norton one, which was paid for. Any free ones that are any good?
I'm using kerio personal firewall, and I'm very satisfied with it. the free version comes with some reduced featureset, but I don't need these features anyway.
Zone Alarm is good. I have used it for many months.
The first few days it can be kind of repetative to make it remember what to block and what not to, but after that everything is fine.
Well I will eventually get another computer in the future without my parents buying Norton for our home computer. Also, I have 2 friends who might be getting computers soon that don't want to spend money that they don't absolutely have to. And I don't really know how good the Windows SP2 firewall is.
So I have heard negative and positive about ZoneAlarm. Any others that are very good and free?
When you install the regular Zone Alarm, after installation it asks you if you want a 15-day free trial. After the 15 days it switches to the normal version again.
How is McAfee firewall and antivirus compared to Norton? I have both (one is not installed) and I don't know which one I should use. You can't use both at the same time right?

Right, like for antivirus you shouldn't use both at the same time. I think ZoneAlarm actually disables the Windows firewall upon installation, and I'd imagine the other ones do as well.
Sygate is a bit more secure than ZoneAlarm. Although I'm still using ZA (partly because I'm lazy and partly because I'm just about to go offline to install Outpost).
ZoneAlarm is very easy to setup though, so as a "first base" firewall it's quite good. Teaches the basic issues of firewalls well for instance WHICH programs are allowed network access.
You don't have to buy it after 15 days, but some of its features become gone. It's still a very nice firewall even after that.
By the way... I've noticed that whenever a new [big] update is released, I can just uninstall and install the firewall and I still get my 15 day trial with its full features. That's pretty cool.
Sygate was purchased by Symantec and Kerio was purchased by <some company whose name escapes me at the moment>. They no longer offer free version, if I remember correctly. I do happen to have the free ones they were offering in December, so if you want them emailed out to you, just drop me a PM.
