Frequently Asked Questions - (FAQ)

Can't find the save again i pasted the adress in my adress bar that didn't work it's not in the pre-game thread neither why must it hide from me

I would like to post a question regarding a general question about gameplay and the way the governor chooses which square to work upon city growth. The problem I have is that the example and situation I am dealing with is from GOTM 20 and it would be a spoiler to show the city map and the problem I am dealing with. I could post in another section of CFC, but what's the point, anyone who is planning on playing GOTM and hadn't started yet would see some important information regarding the starting posistion. Any suggestions, or should I just wait until after the month to ask the question?

The instruction order is:

1. Calculate disorder or WLTKD.
2. Add food, and a new citizen if the box is full.
3. Add shields, and complete production if the box is full.
4. Add culture, and expand borders if the box is full.

So city growth gives you extra shields the turn it happens (especially if you emphasize production), but border expansion doesn't.

I understand your question and was surprised to see the exact effects Dave describes but it does happen even when emphasize production and governors are not on.

I have read in another thread that often times the AI will choose forests to work next. I don't know why but if a forest is available it will work it.

Not always. If, for example, there is an irrigated wheat available the governer will pick that on growth. I think it has to do with the power level of the tile. Power in the sense that Cracker uses it in the opening plays thread. Irrigated wheat in despotism is 5food+1g=6, plains cow is 2food+2sheilds=4,forest is 1food+2shields=3. Grass and Plains each are 2. It may be as simple as the Governer picks the biggest power tile. I didn't do any experiments.

Also, I've heard that despite the emphasis, a city less than +3fpt will still pick food tiles. If you're already at +3fpt, then the tile picked would emphasis sheilds if so selected. I think the emphasis is used to break the tie if two tiles have the same power value. Again, these are all just guesses without any tests. Someone in the know, please tell it like it is.

I have a specific example but can't go there ;). Took me a bit by surprise lets say. Anyway, lets assume you are at +5f and with +7 shields and your unit/building/settler requires 9 more to complete or 2 turns and only 5 food or 1 turn to grow. If all your bonus food or power tiles are already being worked you can leave a forest tile unworked. The city checks for WLTK or rioting, City calculates food and grows and assigns the citizen to the best shield tile (at least in my case it was a forest) and the new total shields are count +9 allowing the unit to be built that same turn.

CF may be correct but you will usually have the high power tiles already seleected just to get the growth.

Pretty neat how much you can say without saying anything.;)

Drewshark@ hope you can read between the lines and that we were close enough to help you.

 Well 2 questions on the same topic in different threads and a real example in a personal game so why not share my awe.

still can't find it i even did a search of the civfanatics site and it's not there why is this always such a pain in the ass?

It’s pretty simple. The link is ‘hidden’ in the read-me file to make sure that you read the file and install the necessary units/art. I would PM you the link myself but I’m at work now. Maybe some other player will.

Beware the wrath of Cracker. All technical problems with the game are supposed to be PM'd or emailed to Cracker or Creepster.

With out getting too specific;
I way 7 shields away producing 5 shields a turn. I was +2 food with growth in one turn, two food away. I had production in queue for the governor w/ a forest available yet he chose to work more food even though it wasn't needed. I don't get it!

Just a simple question. Is there a webpage to submit the QSC or it has to be send through email. Asking this since there is a webpage for the full game submission.

Also, what is the naming format for the QSC timeline and save file?

E-mail the game to

quick_start@civfanatics.net

the naming format should be similar to the submission format

Membername_xxYYYY.sav For example: JohnSmith_ad1210.sav.

Please remember to send the timeline as well.

A better example would be JohnSmith_bc1000.sav.;)

I just posted a long report in the GOTM20 Spoiler 2 thread, complete with a map attachment. It formatted just widely enough on the screen that one needs to scroll to read across, which is not good. Is the map too big? If so, could I switch it for a smaller one? Are there established parameters for attachment sizes? Or is there anything I can do to squeeze the width of the message?

@Txurce: You need to reduce your pictures to about 70%. If you use Paint this works best if you first switch to JPG, and only after that reduce by using the strech/skew option form the menu. Hope this helps.

I look forward to seeing that if and when I ever qualify for spoiler 2 :goodjob:

As you are on a Mac (I think), you need to use something like Graphics Converter, which is shareware, to edit the screenshots and reduce their size.
I use Photoshop Elements which you have to pay a bit for, and that has a Save for Web option that allows you to reduce the size and colour map and save in .gif or .jpeg formats.

You can replace the image in your post with a narrower one. Use the Upload File button at the bottom of any forum page to put a modified file up on the server in uploads4. Then edit your post and look for the IMG, /IMG tags and replace the url text between them with the url for your new file.

As I think other people have explained, the program uses this algorithm to select a new tile to work (assuming "emphasize production"): It chooses the tile that produces the largest number of shields, assuming that after adding that tile your net food production will be at least +3. If it would be less than +3, then it finds a tile that will give you +3 food production, and from among those the one with the most shields. If there's no way to get +3 food production, then it chooses the largest amount of food available, and from among those, the one with the most shields.

Since this isn't GOTM specific, you'd be better off asking this sort of question in one of the more general forums.

P.S. This is in PTW 1.21f (at least). I've heard that original Civ3 is a bit different, but I've never played that.
