I'd say they saw the writing on the wall... and decided it was about time to kiss your feet.

Besides, you had lots of shiny happy things in your empire. They had to face a food shortage for eternity as a herd of cows ambled around within view of the city

PS: why didn't you pillage the $hit out of that sea-side village for easy ? Troll them barbs! Keep a unit a couple of turns away, wait until they build the cottage, and sweep in to burn it once every dozen turns or so.

Bah, nothig special. I suspect when Augustus became a vassal, the land he lost to captured cities' BFC by Hatshe was equivalent to 50% of his lands, meaning an automatic (and independent of AI decision) vassal relation breaking.

What had happened was she attacked Ragnar, so while she's busy on that front I helped myself to her core cities. All the while AC trolled her by staying home. As soon as I signed the peace treaty I guess the power balance was such she was eligible to become AC's vassal.

The best thing about the switcheroo though, since my peace treaty was with her and not AC, and vassalizing cancels it, I could attack her again right away!

I had a warlords start like that once--I was Hannibal and found Shaka's scout on turn 1. Bonk, Bonk, the scout was dead. I walked in and auto-razed his capitol. At least I knew where to found city #2.

I don't understand that question. The captured city will evidently become the capital. And your first settler will found a normal city.
