[GS] Future Update?

How likely is it that Ed read that there was another topic once upon a time with more pages than this one and just created a new depot to get more pages of speculation?

We know the developers are lurking from time to time. Once the green light has been given from above to speak freely about a future update. They could show their face and give a nod here on civfanatics. At the moment their lips are ceiled.

I think memes could be used on us. Firaxis is not unknown to troll us back like with Tamar. But i doubt they would fool us by creating new depots to confuse us. But others might know more about this. I dont think it is their style even do we notice a new depot or update within an hour.

So, Ed Beach is familiar with the Pandemic board game. That's not surprising, but here you go:

I've thought a 'hook' to add plagues would essentially be a Co-op victory that was essentially a riff on pandemic.Though that would probably a AI mess. Additional emergency/diplo options would be likely.

Well, we obviously aren't dealing with one single thing anymore.

Options:
2 standard DLCs
2 mini Expansions
1 expansion and 1 DLC of indeterminate size

1 intended expansion, and then said expansion with the plague mechanic removed for the time being (to be released for free or paid at a later date)?

We are now in totally unknown territory.

Does anyone remember what options the survey about kind of future content we want said?

Was there an option to have smaller game mechanic DLC?

It might be that firaxis is going down the Amplitude/Paradox model where we will get mini DLC featuring a new game mechanic and 1-2 civs that specialise in it.

It would box them in less than their current model where I would seriously doubt they add a large forth expansion after a third.

Smaller individual mechanic DLC with leaders they could theoretically just keep making until they run out of ideas

It still doesn't tell us there isn't a single large expansion coming. A second DLC could still be something like:

- A pre-order bonus, packaged separately like the Aztec Civ;
- Game's Soundtrack or other digital extras like Art, etc;
- An Advanced Map Maker, which requires subscription to a Free DLC for it to download?
A Worldbuilder as a DLC would surprise me, if it's internal there is no reason to change the current implementation, it "just" need to be completed, and if it become external, then it would be a part of the existing Development Tools DLC

Something along these lines was actually the first thing that came to my mind. An alternate release branch of the code with Plagues removed. Although I doubt a full depot would be needed for that, especially since last i heard the first one (Runner) was still empty.

I also think its possible they remove disease mechanics, even though for me it would be really wanted feature to have (maybe only next to free cities becoming 'something') ... so remove that (took you maybe 1 month to remove), insert something else (maybe 1-2 month's to make) and release disease sometimes later or never.

Here in Washington State they just ordered all restaurants and bars closed "for the duration". That should remove a lot of distractions from the workforce and make game development even faster, shouldn't it?
depends on your job and situation. At home you have no one really looking over your shoulder. No one to "keep" you working. You might have some conferences online or some points where you have to check in with how you are doing, but otherwise you are fairly free. There are a lot of things in ones home that can distract you.(like playing civ...) At the same time, it is more relaxing, and you can work at your own pace. I work from home. There are times where i just dont feel like getting much done so i spend the day playing various games like civ. There are other times i go days or weeks without playing many games. I don't work a normal 8 hour day. I tend to work in a few hour spurts. I come back a little later and pick up where i left off. I can only sleep 3-4 hours at a time, so i work between those "naps".

Now with a game like CIv, i think working from home wouldn't be that bad. You spend your day making a new feature or bug fixing, then playing a ton of Civ testing it out. You go to the files and make a few tweaks. merge any changes. Talk to other coworkers discussing the various changes. They would probably have better tools than us at home to make changes quickly.

Well, the original comment was intended as a joke, because in fact there are far more distractions than bars and restaurants, and most of them are away from work/at home. On the other hand, I'm a retired military history writer, and, for a perfect example, my partner down in Oregon and I have in the last two days finalized corrections to an entire chapter, and completed correspondence with a Russian University to publish a translation of an article we wrote a few years ago, so it's been a very productive 48 hours.
On the other hand, if there's a new Mod for Civ VI (or the interminably-delayed Something that everyone is speculating about) I can easily blow most of the day if I'm not careful.

New free update along with paid DLC for Stellaris out today, for those who are unaware.

Should keep me well distracted until a Civ announcement is made.

I am aware. Already bought the stellaris expansion. Just to busy with hearts of iron 4 to make time for stellaris since 25 feb :)
It is on my to do list. Civ 6 will go first when a new patch or dlc reaches us with at least 1 big interesting overhaul or exiting new feature.

Back to the speculation side of things, now that we have speculated further, that this might be two small DLCs, maybe even adding new mechanics, the names "Runner" and "Plaid" may be hints at who the new Civs are, if we are getting them.

Plaid could be a Celtic civ and runner is still out there.

Codename Plaid reminds me of plaid-wearing Boudicca like in Civ 5. :) (I know it wasnt historical..)
[/quote]

Also, it was discovered several pages ago in this thread that one of the ladies who is an art designer for Civ 6 had concept pics of what appeared to be Boudicca. I don't know how they would go about putting her in the game though. I don't think they could make her an alt for Scotland. Would they make a "Celtic" civ even though we don't do blob civs anymore?

FXS has an old-school marketing/production method--they don't confirm anything until there's a release date three months away, with a PR campaign prepped. We all know this, and it's annoying, but it is what it is. I haven't been too worried about the additional delay between whatever it is they're working on--I think with the console launches, plus wanting this new piece of content to maybe be bigger or better, more time makes sense.

That said, given the current crisis, I can't think of a better time to announce that something is coming. We're (mostly) all at home, playing lots of games, and we're primed for something like this. Plus, it would take people's minds off what is going on. I know that I have a limit on the amount of coronavirus news that I can consume. There's nothing we can do except stay at home, so news at a certain point just increases anxiety. So I think it would actually be wonderful if they announced something.

Also, can we stop speculating about a plague mechanic being the reason for the delay? There's absolutely no evidence that this would be in a potential expansion (the fact that it's in the scenario doesn't imply this at all), and it's kind of irresponsible to just make this into a narrative.

I've been trying to get into Endless Legend as it's been so highly recommended, but I've run into the same problem I always have with Paradox games--the tutorial is useless (and often built for the vanilla game version), nothing is explained, the game is riddled with typos/lack of polish, and I lose interest. I've stopped trying to get into Paradox games because I just can't get past the entry barrier. (Though I have a friend who recommends Stellaris...) At least with EL it's a 4X game, but there's still little explanation. I'm going to give it one more chance, but basically every time I play a non-Firaxis 4X or grand strategy game, it dramatically increases my appreciation for the simplicity, elegance, and polish of Firaxis's work.

I don't have the time (except maybe right now) or the interest to spend hours getting into a game with Youtube videos or fan guides. (Also, the Paradox expansion model is really frustrating too.) For someone like me, the FXS games are the perfect balance of strategy, depth, and polish.

Again, I respect people who like these games, and I know why they are loved, but the barrier to entry is just way too high for me (and I think many others).

I've always thought that runner, if it was in any ways related to a civ, HAS to be Ethiopia !

It would be cool, but not likely, and honestly years too late.
So much free time confined at home right now... and GameCore modding is still locked.

I'm not sure if civ VI is really more intuitive than EL, but it's much easier to comprehend because it's based on history and you've probably played a civ game before. At least for me that's why I always take some time to learn other 4Xs, even the non-historical Beyond Earth, that is a FXS game. Yet, you can do ok and know most mechanics in EL after 50 hours of just playing, especially if you do not change factions all the time, while for some PDS titles...
As for learning a PDS grand strategy game: I learned both that I can play fairly well by cheating. Cheating yourself either some money/manpower/prestige/piety allows to focus on one aspect of the game without having to worry about the other. Unlimited money is far from an easy victory in EU4 and CK2 for a new player, so I had a challenge and fun finding out how the games worked from the start. For CK2 it also means that you can start in an interesting region (Spain for example), and not in rather boring Ireland. However, as the mechanics are fairly complex, you probably won't use some of them to their best without a guide or watching videos in the long run after you have a grasp of the game's basics.

As for the speculations about FXS announcing something: I bet that the original announcement was planned for E3 in June. I doubt that FXS would deviate from their original schedule, even with that show being canceled. So we might have to speculate based on nothing for 3 more months and see something released by September or October.
