G-MinorAug1: Mistfit Throws Down the Gauntlet

Some questions regarding strategy for this kind of game:

I ran into lots of corruption playing Tiny Conquest, should I be building FP asap close to my capital to increase the OCN as early as possible? (PTW not Conquests)

Do you try to play as an XCC rather than as a land grab till space is filled, and if so how many cities would you recommend?
I didn't bother building the FP, didn't seem worth it for the length of game. All I built were a couple of granaries, some barracks (4 or 5), then lots of warriors/celtic swordsmen and workers/settlers. My only research was to Iron Working. Using this minimalist strategy the hardest part is getting a good balance between military, settlers and workers.

I usually build 5-7, using my capital with a granary. Your first 2-3 ring cities are your big producers, and the others are just to grab potential resource spots and produce workers and settlers. Barracks everywhere possible. To echo Dianthus its kind of tough to figure out how many units you need of each type.

You can play against 2 AI but I usually add a 3rd; I dont know about PTW but that 3rd civ should be key for grabbing enough tiles. Religious would be a necessity for the temples and border expansions.

Sure, don't I just have to submit a game?
Yes, so long as you follow the normal HOF rules. The only difference between this and a normal HOF game is that we'll update the first post of this thread with the best date so far as the submissions come in (before the update). That way the HOF staff don't have an advantage in knowing what date to aim for :).

The second game I found out at the end that there was not enough settlable land to hit the dom limit with the 2nd opponent down to one city. After the game ended i used Rings to discover that there was a sizable offshore island.
I just had one of those, except I was on the "sizable offshore island". It didn't seem that sizable when I was on it though! I've also had a few games break down due to not getting iron in my borders during the initial settlement phase. I guess I was pretty lucky with that first game!

Oh, is this an official and regulated thing? I thought it was just sorta like a quick game.
It started off as a quick game, then it sort of became an official quick game. Maybe in the future we'll have some official slow games as well, who knows?!

Yes just like a normal HOF game. Just go to the HOF tables link on the frontpage, enter your name, password, and the 4000 BC and final saves.

It's up to you Own, you don't HAVE to submit it, but like killercane said, it's easy to do. Just took a couple of seconds to submit my latest tiny emporer domination.

This one was only a slight improvement over my previous best, 610BC. I should really have beat killercane's 650BC date (nowhere near the 750BC at the moment). I was much better at building settlers in this game, but not very good at getting them in place at the "How many tiles left? Just 20? I could have reached that with just 1 or 2 more settlers!" stage.

Well my first victory came up short. 550BC. I was using the Maya. Republic sling shot, using Javelin throwers early (GA) and Horsemen later. I purchased 7-8 temples and as many settlers. Ironically, I was 1 short of the dom limit for 2 turns at the end. :crazyeye: I think my downfall was auto-razing three cities thinking I could recolonize fast enough.

Thread stickied. This gauntlet will "close" August 19th.

Well I had a couple more goes with the Iroquois last night. I had a series of promising but flawed starts: one with no horses in sight (apart from right by the American capital), another game with one civ on another island and yet another one with a substancial offshore island.

In the end I got a game going well but probably left it a little late to get started on the warring and only beat my other decent attempt by two turns-570BC this time. Maybe going for the cash rushing ability of Monarchy is not worth it. Six turns of anarchy hurt a fair bit. I think I need a rethink!

BTW there are some great dates here, showing that there are many spots that are ripe for the taking!

Ok. With Mistfit's plea for more detail, here is my latest attempt.

I tried the Celts this time and got closer, but a stubborn Abe Lincoln stopped me in my tracks. By 1125, I had connected my iron and upgraded 7 warriors with funds provided by not researching past IW. My military was as follows:

The trouble was that Portugal and America had fought a war earlier and many of their cities were prime autoraze material. I first kicked off against Portugal a couple of turns later and took them down to one city in 925 with a PT. I then declared war on America.

By 775, I was one city from domination but America would not give one of their two, no-culture size-one cities for peace. I'd fallen short of beating the 750BC target.

I had some units outside the Portugese capital as a backup plan but they had units barring my path to the prize. I redeclared on Portugal a turn later when I had some more gallics in range but I was held at bay with just one wounded spear left in the town at the end of the turn. I took it the next turn getting domination in 710BC. I'm getting closer!

On reflection, I think that I need to be more prepared to start the wars a little earlier and have a couple of settlers around the front line to fill cities that are autorazed.
