Game crashes during ranged attacks

Hi there,
I'm having the same issues as mentioned above. I've played Civ V for ages all fine. Then yesterday it started crashing only on ranged attacks (Mostly City attack, but also archers).
This is only since the new update that supports Windows 8.
I'm using Windows 7 SP1. directX9
I tried to implement the suggestions about changing the compatibility to DirectX11, but it wouldn't take on steam.exe. I can't find the Civ exe file..
I tried re-installing from the original disk, but it updated itself automatically and i'm back where i started.

Any help?

Could I please take a look at your dxdiag?

Just as the title says, every time I try and click on the icon above the city to attack an enemy from a distance, the game locks. I can move the mouse, but nothing else happens. I've tried from different auto-save spots too. I have NOT tested it in different games or even in a different city as I only have the one city so far.

Strange. I've had the worst luck getting to run this game (I have to use DirectX9), and now with the latest patch...this :\

i am also using windows 7 but i cant click on directx10 & 11 because it says i need service pack 2 or higher. when the game was new i was using this but the option went away a long time ago for some reason but i didnt really care because it let me use directx9 which was fine. I am now having the hangups and freezing when bombarding. been through this entire thread with no luck.

I had the same problem! My temporary solution (until they get this straightened out) Is to directly right click on enemy units with my own ranged units instead of clicking the bombard button first and to SLOWLY click the city bombard button as well as slowly approach my target. Takes some getting used to, though, so you should also increase the amount of autosaves between turns (in "options".)

Hope this helps!

Please check if the Steam.exe or Civ5.exe are not maybe installed in Vista compatibility mode (right click -> properties -> tab for compatibility). If so, then please uncheck that, this should make Dx11 then available for you.

thx J. I did check and the box is checked. Problem is it wont let me uncheck it due to it not be highlighted if you know what I mean. Why would that be?

May I ask why you cannot use the Dx11 option?

 uh, no idea. I think there was another person who had that problem, but can't remember the solution.
I'd suggest that you delete the .exe, and then verify the integrity of the game's files. That should redownload the .exe, and hopefully it's then not in the compatiblity mode.

i got it J. Had to click the button "change settings for all users" It now will start in directx10&11. havent had a chance to play the game yet to see. Will try later this afternoon. Hope it works. Still see the problem with mods reloading all the time but that is for another thread. Thx again J and ill let you know later if the bombard works.

My game crashes every time I try to bombard a enemy with my city. This started after the Windows 8 patch nov 1st,
Always run weel before that, i've played over 800 hours without issu
Any toughts????

Aside from the issue with ranged attacks, have you tried the DX11 version since the patch? We've worked on this quite a bit in terms of optimization.

Have the same issue when the city bombard and I can't use direct x 10/11 cause i have windows 7. Is that right or what for the directx?

I wrong, how can use it (direct11)???

You should be able to use DirectX.
Please see this:

so i found the civ5 exe and set the compatibility.. re-booted and it worked for a while. i saved the game and loaded it later. it wouldn't load. hung on the 'continue your journey'.
so i started a new game and it's still crashing on a ranged attack.

any further ideas?

Not sure how to get that for you.

So what's the final solution for Windows 7 service pack 1?

Do we check the compatibility box for what?

my kids think this is a sign from the universe that i should stop playing Civ!

The combined DX10/11 option should be available for you, if you have the service packs installed.

Hmmm, I'm running Service Pack 2, and I ran the DXSetup.exe file to make sure I actually have the most recent version of DirectX, but the launcher still says "update required" for the DX10/11 option.
