General Knowledge Quiz

SHAME ON YOU then!

Yes, I feel it.

Actually, it's Pierre Koeing, made maréchal in 1984 (Posthumus).

Well, the previous ones (Tassigny, Juin and Leclerc) were all made Maréchal de France in 1952, but Juin was the only one still alive (the two others were Posthumus).

But anyway, it's not the correct answer... As Maréchal de France is not the highest rank that existed during the history of France.

This is why I said my answer was technically correct, posthumous awards don't count. (well they shouldn't count in this specific instance, so I can claim a win ;))
And this is why I should think a bit more before answering. But to be honest, I had totally forgotten about Koening.
As for the other part... I'm still looking for that, it is indeed an interesting question.

EDIT : Okay, I think I've got it (not sure); I'll let others search for it for a while, because it can be fun and instructive. Btw, the French Wiki is a total mess, I'll probably create an account soon to rectify all the mistakes there (at least in the military history portal).

So, just to be sure, is the 'rank' you are looking for from the XI to XIX century ?

Alright then : How about 'Grand Connétable de France' ?
If it's not that, I'll go hang myself.

EDIT : And if it's not that, then it's Senéchal.

The rank is indeed Connétable, second only to the king himself, who commanded all the armies of France, and had several "maréchaux" under his command. But who was the last one to hold this rank?

One of the Emperor's brothers, Louis Bonaparte. And Louis Alexandre Berthier as vice-connétable and minister of war.

And Open Floor. :p

Where do you find the worlds highest railway track? Be a bit more specific than country...

I don't know more specifically than country, but I'm pretty sure it's somewhere in Japan.

Is it one of the high rails the British Empire built in India. Saw a history channel bit on it, don't remember the name.

No, not in India. This one is rather new though, so it might have been in India if the program is a few years old.

Ahhh, then it's the line in China towards Lhassa, right ?
IIRC they completed it before the Olympics.

Indeed it is! :goodjob:
Yeah, it was in 2006 I think.

Okay, maybe Ozbenno can have the next question if he wants.
