Influenced by the semi-discussion in the hilarious pictures thread, I am curious to see what the rest of OT thinks.

Has there even been any good music in the last two decades?
Does Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" suffice as Gen X's "anthem"?

What is Generation Y's anthem? Is there even a recent song which will be remembered after 2 years?

Personally I think the sound of Nirvana does portray the feelings of the period, but the next generation doesnt have any such representation.

I always think of REM's Losing My Religion as representing that time actually.

what years do GenY include? I've always been confused and unsure of which generation I am a part of... I was born in '88, so where does that put me (12 yrs old in 2000)?

edit: ah, I guess I am genY.

For Gen X? I also like the REM option, but the Nirvana song probably is the "anthem" (a lame one at that, imo).

You're Gen X if you remember cold war nuclear terror, you're Gen Y if you were too young and the wall already fell by the time you were old enough to know these things. Other dividing lines are whether the Simpsons and Nirvana have always been part of your cultural landscape or if you remember their arrival.

I was never really a fan of thiers, either, but as far as what they stood for, etc. I think its fits.

I didnt really think about REM, but I could see that being used as a good representation.

With the lights out its less dangerous
Here we are now
Entertain us
I feel stupid and contagious
Here we are now
Entertain us

If that doesn't sum us up, I don't know what would.

Somebody once called that the "Look At Me" Generation, which I found fitting for the most part.

I also think that a better label than "GenY" would be Internet generation, the digital generation, or my favorite the LoLcat generation

the LoLcat generation
This was a triumph.
I'm making a note here: huge success.
It's hard to overstate my satisfaction.

Aperture science.
We do what we must because we can.
For the good of all of us
Except the ones who are dead.

But there's no sense crying over every mistake
You just keep on trying till you run out of cake
And the science gets done and you make a neat gun
For the people who are still alive.

I'm not even angry.
I'm being so sincere right now.
Even though you broke my heart and killed me.
And tore me to pieces.
And threw every piece into a fire.
And as they burned it hurt because
I was so happy for you.

Now these points of data make a beautiful line
And we're out of beta we're releasing on time.
So I'm glad I got burned think of all the things we learned
For the people who are still alive

Go ahead and leave me.
I think I prefer to stay inside.
Maybe you'll find someone else to help you.
Maybe Black Mesa -
That was a joke. Haha. Fat chance.
Anyway, this cake is great:
It's so delicious and moist.

Look at me still talking when there's science to do.
When I look out there it makes me glad I'm not you.
I've experiments to run there is research to be done
On the people who are still alive

And believe me I am still alive.
I'm doing science and I'm still alive.
I feel fantastic and I'm still alive.
While you're dying I'll be still alive.
And when you're dead I will be still alive.

Still alive
Still alive

For genY, my vote would go to either

Green Day's "American Idiot,"
Foo Fighters "Best of you"
Weezer "Hash Pipe,"
The Offspring "The Kids aren't alright,"
Jimmy Eat World "the middle"
Red Hot Chili Peppers "Scar Tissue,"
Rise Against "Swing Life Away" or "Give it all"

But this one gets my vote:
Blink 182 "All the small things"
