[GS] Geographical Feature Labels

And according to Ed, City State will not use the geographic label system.
That's disappointing. I was hoping for that.

Many names for places in the U.S. came from Native American names. We know because they told us. :) While there are no cities or barb camps necessarily in these areas, I always imagine there are small bands of people living in every non claimed tile on the map. That's where your money goes when you buy a tile, you are buying their land. That's how I like to think of it anyhow. So presumably, these people tell other civilization scouts what the name of the river is. Of course realistically, these small groups of people should have a say on the name of the river. And even nearby barbarian camps should be able to name nearby rivers.
Yea, of course, but that's a bit different situation. I was talking (based on what was said in the life stream) about the moment when you discover an already-named river and you guess which civilization was there, only by the name. That clearly means that you haven't met any living person, because you would have much more hints about the civ, not just a name of a river.

It'd be great if these names were editable by the controlling Civ as well. As an example, many of the cities in India currently originally had different names. Bombay = Mumbai, Calcutta (Bangladesh) = Kolkata, Poona = Pune. Geographical feature names ought to be able to be altered too.

Quite a few mountains that straddle over borders have several names as it is.

Kolkata is not in Bangladesh, it is the capital city of the Indian state of West Bengal.

Oops. I keep forgetting my basic Warhammer 40K Orkish:
"What's the capital of Bangladesh?"
"Dakka dakka dakka!"

So finally just have small time to watch the livestream and updating the list. Do you guys think the Balkan Mountain could actually belongs to Hungary instead of Turkey?

Kilaeua is a volcano name in the Hungary livestream. It probably belongs to America.

They're in Bulgaria and Serbia, which is historically Ottoman territory. I would hope that if they appeared on the Greek or Macedonian list they'd use the Thracian name Haemus Mons...

One of the most interesting feature I found from the Gathering Storm is the ability to guess which civilization is in the game by seeing a river name. So it's not a randomized name taken from a pool like the continent name. Let this be a thread to collect all the names found from the screenshots, live-streams, etc as the game periodically revealed. Who knows, we might deduct a new civilization or any other valuable stuffs from here!

Spoiler Source :

"As we added more significance to these geographic features, we thought there should be a way to identify them. This inspired the addition of named features. So every time a new feature – river, volcano, mountain range, or desert – is discovered, it is named after the discovering civ. Now if Egypt starts on a River, that waterway will officially be designated as the Nile River. Of course, this gets tricky when a civ like the Netherlands discovers a Volcano – in that case, it will be named for a civ that isn’t in the current game. It ends up becoming an interesting geographic trivia game while you play. And the better you are with river and mountain names the more clues you get about which other civs may be present in this particular Civilization world."

Do you find a feature name not featured here yet? (lol)
Comment below and I'll add it! :)
National Parks are named after a city or natural wonder adjacent to the park

What about oceans, inland seas or lakes ... I would love to see those named, particulary oceans

@BenZL43

Can you update with the OP with the feature names we learned from the Canadian livestream?

@Giskler you may be able to help out with this.

You just need some time. Someone already pointed out that Thames was once the word for river.

The way Australian English is going, I'm sure it won't be long before Great Sandy Desert sounds like some exotic place name borrowed from the aboriginals. :)

Most Australians already think Nullabor is an Aboriginal word rather than the somewhat less creative Latin "No trees".

As for the blank spaces in the OP for National Parks, the one we've seen labelled was named after the city. It's possible that if a national park contains a Natural Wonder (this one didn't) it will take the name of the NW. But there seem to be no pregenerated National Park names (such as Peak District National Park for England).

Obviously, I made that comment before we spotted the name Yangtze in a livestream.

And Huang He is in under its English name - which seems unfortunate.

I'm still holding out hope that islands will be named.

I saw Colorado Plateau desert in my game. :goodjob: I was excited about that. Though that may be from the Ynamp mod. Where do I find the list of these names?

I have a list of them all at the bottom of my Map Thread

Are those names in the Civilopedia? They should be clickable to get more info. about those names.

I wish the Civs would get their own languages in the game, and not the English one. I dislike the Dutch settling The Hague near the Rhine. It's Den Haag, and De Rijn. I dislike Germany settling Cologne, instead of Köln.
That they all have to use the roman alphabet, I can understand, but why do the city names, and geographical labels, need to be translated too?
