LONDON, Nov 25 (Reuters) - Former Manchester United winger George Best, one of the greatest players in football history, died on Friday after spending much of his adult life battling an alcohol problem. He was 59.
Best, who had been in hospital since the beginning of October, underwent a liver transplant in 2002 after years of heavy drinking.
He was admitted to hospital after suffering a reaction to the treatment he was receiving for his new liver and then developed an infection and internal bleeding.
"After a long and very valiant fight, Mr George Best died this afternoon in the intensive care unit at Cromwell Hospital," a spokesman for the hospital said.
