LONDON, Nov 25 (Reuters) - Former Manchester United winger George Best, one of the greatest players in football history, died on Friday after spending much of his adult life battling an alcohol problem. He was 59.

Best, who had been in hospital since the beginning of October, underwent a liver transplant in 2002 after years of heavy drinking.

He was admitted to hospital after suffering a reaction to the treatment he was receiving for his new liver and then developed an infection and internal bleeding.

"After a long and very valiant fight, Mr George Best died this afternoon in the intensive care unit at Cromwell Hospital," a spokesman for the hospital said.

Yup - in my book the greatest. Certainly the first footballer to transcend the sport and become a world famous media figure for his exploits on and off the pitch.

Peerless on it too. At a time when defenders such as Ron Chopper Harris and Norman Bitesyerleg Hunter were around, Bestie was remarkable for not getting kicked. he was too quick, too skilful and impossible to manmark out of a game. Sadly he never had the chance to play at a WC finals.

He could shoot with either foot, was very good in the air, had blistering pace and acceleration and perfect balance. The greatest player from the Uk beyond doubt and right up there with Pele, Cruyff and Maradona.

Bestie certainly still holds the world record for Miss Worlds.

RIP Georgie best. The Belfast Boy.

RIP George Best. :(

" I spent a lot of money on booze, birds and fast cars. The rest I just squandered."

George Best R.I.P.

Remember him for his football, nothing else matters

Perhaps - but the sense of 'live fast die young' is undeniably there. George made his choices unapologetically.

I think he said once that he wouldn't change the slightest thing in his life. If he was being honest, he lived as he wanted and died for that. I like to imagine him having a chat now with his "twin" Garrincha, wherever they are.

Unfortunately his life does distract from his football achievements, which is sad, because he is one of the all time greats.

Maradona...

RIP George Best. I never saw him play but I've seen footage. Truely one of the best.

The remarkable story of the waiter bringing Champagne to him in a hotel room. George Best had miss Universe in one arm, and 20.000 pounds of gambling profit in the other. The waiter asked where things went wrong.......

Anyway,
I think he is more with Garrincha than with Pele or Cruyff.

Yup - George went missing a few times - Miss England, Miss Uk and three Miss Worlds.
