I came across this article which quoted a German saying:

"I go abroad and feel uncomfortable to say I am German. We cannot wave our flags the way other countries do. Maybe today can be a step toward changing this."

It also quoted a German saying that there was still "prejudices" in the world, i.e. against Germans. Some may find it ironic that a German would complain about prejudice given German history. What do you think?

As for me I am pro-German. Even though the German language is not pretty as a German in the article ackwowledges: "His name sounds more beautiful in Italian"; it is also true that German food is very good :crazyeye:

Seriously, don't you think it is wrong to shame Germans and prevent them from waving the German flag? I feel the same way about US Southernors and their historic Confederate flag.

If any flag should be waven in Germany I hope it will be the one from my avatar.
Besides I consider flag waving waste of time...

As a German I can say we have had some bad experiances with too much engaged flag wavers. Since this days flag waving is out of fashion here-
and I think I like it...

Agreed. Flag waving is nasty. I can't understand the obsession with flag waving.

Regarding prejudices, I think, there are some. After all, we are Nazis, aren't we?

PS: And btw, I love the German language.

I NEVER had any bad feelings or thought of anything bad in German history when I saw a (new) German flag flying around. For me the German people are hard working and probably a little mislad during XX, but are now firmly back on track.

The odd thing here is that the Black-Red-Gold flag resembles the better parts of German history (it was originally the flag of the 1848 revolution), so there should be nothing wrong with it.

However, for me it is a bit tainted since it was mostly used by the military for decades (again, the Bundeswehr is not a 'evil' organization by any means) and for NPD stickers; and since I heavily dislike the military since I've been there (and subsequently objected halfways), and of course the NPD, I do not like to wave that flag myself.
OTOH, the Bundeswehr image is better among younger people (mainly because it is seen as an employer, not something you're pressed to waste one and a half year in), I have no problems with other pple waving that flag. Just not me.

Germany has just as many positive things in it's history as they have bad. Their only problem is that most people seem to remember only the bad (as usual).

One thing impressing me each time being in Russia was the friendly welcome from the Russians always- I did never face being blamed a Nazi even once, In Western-Europe it happend more than once.

Compared to the Eastern front the Western front was a sanatory. The Russians really have more reason than any of the former allies to blame us- but they do not.

I really think the US should change their flag to a 50-star Confederate flag. The US flag is THE ugliest flag I have ever seen, whereas the Confederate one was among the best.

Just among the best. The finally best is the one of the future CSE as seen on the left!

<------- approximately here!

i dont see why germans shouldnt be proud of their country

also, german food is good, i think youre thinking about england :p
(no offense english people, i like you, i just dont like that deep fried grease with oil on top you all like to eat)

dont get me started on german beer, i think its the best beer in the world (im killing a heineken right now with my other hand ;) )

Waving flags is silly, but if the germans feel like it they should go ahead.

:hmm: isn't Heineken Dutch?

it is? oh well

i like lowenbrau too, dont tell me its from austria (austrian?)

i dunno, i had some good beer when i was there, and lots of it

Do I think that all Germans are jackboot wearing, flag waving, alles in ordnung, panzer driving huns bent on the conquest of Europe? No.

But, that is one of the stereotypes that is associated with the nationality. If it's a prejudice, it's a lot less prejudicial than stereotypes associated with other nationalities and ethnicities.

Be proud of being German, its a nation with much to celebrate.

May be, just without flagwaving you have one hand more free to celebrate whatever.

If I have to hold a beer left and a flag right, how to scratch my nose if it itches???

Really? I always thought that Germans and Russians didn't like each other, and they always saw Poland as the inferior people in the middle. After hearing this, I can't help but say that the other people should forget about it. I am part German and I'm not ashamed of my roots. :p As an American, I don't even think about what Japan did to Pearl Harbor, never. People need to forget about the war, and go on with their lives! Flag waving is cool, and the Germans have all the rights to do it. People need to think about all the good Germans and Japanese have done too. :)

I've been to Southern Germany and I'm brown skinned yet those people were some of the nicest and most polite I've ever met. Same can't be said for the French however (in my experience).

In fact. I made the experiance that neither Germans nor Russians hate each other. Vice verca- remembering the common history we're quite much in love in fact.

Just German-Russians are disliked by both nations. Strange enough.

Generally I just do not get any sense out of flagwaving. What is it good for. Anyway my contry doesn't ask what it can do for me - so whose flag to wave?
Mine, elso none.

I am happy you had a nice stay in Germany.
In fact most of us are pretty nice and not hostile- as long as the ROMANS do not try to conquer us again. IN this case we might erase 3 Legions while passing by to a picknick :)
Sometimes we may seem cold but we're not cold in fact.
Come for the soccer WM and you'll find out yourself...
