Ghandhi (EC) Emperor Cookbook! Let the fun begin.

I can win on Monarch and am trying to make the jump to Emperor... a bit early I suppose, but I like learning quickly.

Spoiler :

I love starting with Mysticism for the early religion, and decided I would try something a little different this game. I teched to found Buddhism first, and decided I would try to run a priest economy. I find this works really well with Ramesses, (EDIT: it works with Ramesses because you get priests early, which explains my pitiful tech rate this game) and I wanted to try it here for a couple reasons. 1. We have no gold or silver. 2. We are Philo, and quick priests will let us bulb religions quicker than usual. 3. We can build the special buildings quickly also.

Tech order: Meditaion -> Hunting -> AH -> BW -> Priesthood -> Wheel
Build order: Worker -> Warrior -> Warrior -> Settler -> Monastery -> Start Oracle
Worker -> Warrior -> Settler

I should've written stuff down as I was doing it, but I'm pretty sure that's how I built things in my first 2 cities. I built no monuments planning on the religion and buildings spreading, which I don't think is a big deal missing out on that culture. I am dissatisfied with my tech order, because my score plummeted from second to last as the game progressed, but I like what I set out to do. I'm going to time the Oracle with Writing finishing so that I'll get CoL as the free tech. Two religions will make for a great economy, and after I get the buildings up I'll focus on scientists mostly. My biggest worry is how far behind I am in power...

Can someone tell me how to post pictures in the middle of spoilers?

Monarch player, epic... Left everything as it was in the save - so that's Emp I guess. So far so good?

Spoiler :

Doesn't take too long to see that this game is going to be a little crazy...

So I settle 1 NW for the brown hill hammer and because I've seen the cow to the S, I avoid it because I've gotten greedy lately on higher levels trying to cram too many resources into my BFC. But it turns out that I don't think it's going to matter too much.

So I'm building my warrior/warrior/warrior while doing wheel/agr/pottery to get those FP cottages up and going when I meet Toku, Monty and GK within a few turns... ok... so I send my three warriors out and steal a worker from each of them. Why not - it slows them down and it's my UU...

They go turtle while I spit out a couple of settlers and start developing the land as fast as I can tech the improvements for it - faster than that actually .

No surprise there's no Copper within easy range. I got it hooked up just before 1500 BC. I made peace with Toku and Monty as well, but GK is still pissed. So I've got three decent cities - some defense too. 4 fast workers. No wonders.

Diplomacy will be in the tank for sure. I think I'm going to have to fight my way out of this one. Need to get some GP points going in Delhi and decide what order to attack the neighbours.

I propose that this is not really a normal game with the AI's and proximity of them. It will take either some serious diplomacy or serious military skills (or probably some of both) to get out of this one alive.

I'm a usual Noble player, but I thought I'd give this a try and see where it lead. If anything, I'll learn how to play better, hopefully. I'm playing whatever settings came down from the save.

Spoiler :

Settled in place.

Scouted around a bit, found the corn + Floodplains, decided I wanted to expand early. Went Worker & Bronze -> Animal Husbandry by way of Agriculture.
Shopped into settler 1, settled. Farmed. Husbandry hit.

I didn't see any copper that looked accessible (Except for the one at Tokugawa.). I went Archery for some defense.

Decided to do a settler for sheep / marble / horse. I get the first one killed by bards . Dumb newbie mistake. The second one got escorted by an archer. And I made the city right at the little cove.

I was going to rush into the barb city that popped up to the E, But there's 3 archers there now. Maybe horse riders. Hmm...

This save would be a lot better if the settler hadn't been eaten and I had 2 Workers.

Comments, etc. welcome. I'm also posting this without having looked at any spoilers, so...

I can't believe I missed that other copper! :mad::mad::mad:

Cmon vote already play next round :D

Emperor player c25% sucesses.

Spoiler :
never played India before, wanted AH, but had no pre-req, so went BW for a WWS chop instead !! - Still managed to confuse myself sufficiently to fit a warrior in that build somehow.

I can forgive myself for nor not following Soiranas Oracle strat, but I never even considered an axerush - DOH !

I attempted to build SH but someone beat me to it on turn 71.

Ah well, its 1500AD, I have 3 cites and will found another this turn by the marble, unless someone tells me why I shouldn't.

Monte has opened borders with me, so I'll try setting up trade with him to boost tech and acquire his religion - I'm not staying agnostic this game - its worship with Monte all the way, hopefully right into Tokus capital with Cats & Eles.

I'm just shadowing, but the game file is included for laughs. All m y cities are in similar places to everyone elses so I can't be bothered with screenies - I'll save the space for later.....

One question for the Gurus - we have wine, so monarchy looks appealing - do I research this, then do construction ? or the other way around ? Bear in mind I won't be getting the mids and I'm not aiming for calender, nor am I looking at any aesthetic-style trade stuff (although maybe I should, hmmm.)

Cheers.

Spoiler :
I have been off the forums for a while, so I do not how the moral standards are now.

I played the game and went worker-stealing plus pinning down for a good 75 rounds on Toku AND Khan. It was just too tempting. The rationale is that I get two of my UU free and set them back enough to rush them with either Axes or Chariots.

My question is: are you allowed to do so!?

I would think worker stealing and pinning down a AI capital is all part of strategy of playing the game. ;)

The downside is other Ai will fill the void left by the space Toku and Khan did not use. Every strategy has its risk i guess. A further downside is negative diplomatic points with all known AI.

Not looked at the map in a bit but if you wanted to do a phant rush reaching construction and HBR sooner would be useful. When the Ai hit engineering this is normally end of line for a phant rush.

Cmon vote already play next round :D

This round was made longer as we started over the new year. We will move back to a 1 week process at the end of this round. (3-4 day play 2-3 days voting.) ;)

Round will end 6pm GMT on 6th Jan 2010 (Wednesday)

 I still need to play this round yet and I was to busy over new years and I work 12 hour shifts till Wednesday so I do need the time. That being said I wont cry  if the round goes to voting before I get to play it. I can still shadow the first round and I doubt my offering will be picked any way.

Oh dear...

Spoiler :

Got Dow'd by Monte, even though I not his least favourite person, by the time I get him off my back GK piles in. Then I beat him back and get peace - tech rate drops, but peace brings some tech-tribute(like alphabet).

Then Monte goes again , I take one of his cities. Then Toku, Brennus & GK pile in .....

Never focused hard enough on getting my power higher than average - being too weak I guess is what did for me.

cries of anguish!

UUUUrrrghhhhhhhggllllelllellarrrggghh !!!! - Dead.

Spoiler :

You lost the game by 1500bc??? I heard of trying a different approach but this is getting silly.

Have you a save to post prior to defeat? DOW on 2 Ai was a big mistake with so many nasty neighbours.

@Gumbolt...

Spoiler :
No I played on (like I said I was shadowing, waiting for other folks maps, votes etc, sux) - I never Dow'd anyone, I just got Dow'd, Dow'd Dow'd Dow'd............too reactive I guess.

I actually gave up around 700AD, but I don't think I saved.

Then I played another map and lost that too - shaka arrrgh !

Perhaps stop worker stealing!!! Creating lots of enemies on a pangea can be fatal at times unless you keep a solid stack to defend your empire. Then again fighting off 2-3 Ai can be the death of you.

Spoiler :
I moved the warrior 1SW, saw the second cows, I decided to settle 1w on the plain hill.

Initial tech path: hunting - agriculture - AH - BW

So my worker (first built) was able to improve the Ivory, then irrigate the floodplain, then the 2 cows, then the plain hill with a mine, then chop.

This because my idea was that Delhi is a powerful production center just since the beginning, and I had tons of forest and start with Mysticism, so I decided to go for Stonehenge that I've got (is also a way to use early the philosophic trait, doubling the GPP point).

As I explored the surround, found that we are boxing between the nicest guys of the game, and seeing the kind of map avalaible, I opted for expand peacefully grabbing as much land as possible from the rivals and hooking up early the strategic resources (also to hiring our hostil neighbours away from them) to stay tuned.

Looking north I decided for this site as my second city:

dotnorth.jpg

I hate (I think as everyone else) to settle on a resource, but in this case I think it is more effective to claime the fish, seeing that thanks with Stonehenge the borders'll pop up quickly and it grabs more land from Monty than settling southern, as you can see from the next SS:

cultvsmonty.jpg

Looking south this is my plan:

dotsouth.jpg

And site "A" was obviously my third city [just a question: why this city is actually not linked??? (see the save)]

So this is the empire overview:

and the tech situation:

techtree.jpg

Only 3 cities, but the fourth settler is coming out (the worker on the riverside grassland would chop for him and then build a cottage) and I have several good spot yet (thanks to a fogbuster on the west I have no boring barbarian cities around).

I have hooked the horses (2 chariots are already out and a third is coming) and now also the copper.
A GP will come in 6 turns.
I have hooked the marble yet, so I'm going for Polytheism instead Writing to try for the Oracle (I have no idea if it's too late on Emperor), and also 'cause it's anyway required on the path to Literature to got The Great Library (exploiting the marble again).

I'll be really grateful to anyone would show me my mistakes and give some advices, thank you :)

@Gumbolt.

Spoiler :
I didn't do anything like worker steal (you have me confused with someone else here).

I was just too weak, and maybe ran into bribery problems - my first war was with Monte despite being in same religion (not a guaranteed defence I know) - I was weak - pathetic - squishy, and I got squashed - I should have been more agressive - maybe I would have survived and maybe she would have liked me heh heh :) not that I had problems with her this game (giving no secrets away, even in the spoiler.... :D).

@Negator regarding diplomacy on this map:

Spoiler :

I found it easiest to declare on HC and then bribe all the other warmongers to declare war on him too. That kept them all busy while I teched far enough to get superior military units to crush my neighbors.
