Ghost in the Shell movie trailer. Why? :/

Did it need to be a LAF, depends on how well it's done.

Guess there are some who say Shakespeare should only be done on the stage, not me, Macbeth on stage bores me but 'Men of respect' is great imo

Scarlet was great in

Hope she does as well in this outing.

I have mixed feelings. On the one hand, it looks gorgeous. On the other hand, so did Stallone's Judge Dredd. I'm also not sure what to make of the shots in the trailer, of which there are a few, which seem lifted directly from the anime. Is this loyalty, or pandering? (Does the difference come down to whether or not I like the overall product?) But there's also new stuff that has a strong Ghost in the Shell vibe, stuff which would I probably accuse of ripping off GitS if it was in another film, which suggests they're managing consistency with the source material without feeling too constrained by it.

Still, they seem to have grasped the tone of it, at least to the extent that it's a trailer for an action film that doesn't go THWUB THWUB THWUB DADADADA THWUB THWUUURRRBBB, and that's a good sign.

TBH the GITS movie (GITS1), was all about the images/animation. Its story was not anything deep, apart from allusions to some depth which imo never really was there in the movie (Puppet-master took second place to the action/gore of the female robot against that impressive robot spider-tank :) ).

And that was back in the 90s (or early 2000s?), when psychological movies were less common than now. So i am not sure if this will be any good if indeed very close to the story in GITS1...

I honestly love her as an actress, especially for Lost in Translation and Under the Skin. Yeah, it blows that they chose her, but what can you do about it? Hollywood gon' Hollywood. Apparently no one in the west aside from evil SJW types :mwaha: wants to see asian actors or actresses and big film studios are happy to pander. They wank to make bank, it's their #1 concern. I probably won't watch the movie anyway even though I always vow to do.. Same with the Star Wars movie.. Same with the War Craft movie. Most films today just don't excite me anymore.

What was the last film you guys really enjoyed? I thought Under the Skin and Inherent Vice were fantastic.

Doctor Strange is a movie I enjoyed without reservation.

The guy directing Ghost in the Shell directed Snow White and the Huntsman, so I'm not hopeful even though I love Ghost in the Shell.

I actually liked Warcraft :) Obviously an epidermic and green-skinned movie, but it was far better than i expected, and the CGI was excellent :D

As for decent movies, i liked It Follows a lot. Mostly for style. It is in the horror genre, though.
A less recent one (2002 iirc, or 2003) was Spider, with Ralph Fiennes and other notables.

A full trailer:

Meh :(

Negatives:

-She isn't naked (as in the anime), but wears a tight skin-toned suit?... Why? (btw, in the anime she was naked half the time, for no apparent reason other than to sell sexual imagery-- the invisibility cloak didn't need it iirc--, but it makes even less sense to have this cope-out).
-Theme song is a stupid new version of a Depeche Mode classic.
-Gives vibes of the Aeon Flux LAF, which is not a good thing :)

Why are people upset that a white girl got the part? The girl in the original looks white too, duh

Kyriakos, you know that Americans hate nudity. I mean, then the movie would be rated R and they'd make less money, etc.

Overall the cinematography looks amazing. Other than that I'd have to see the movie to comment on it, but it seems like they got a lot of things right.

Japanese movies usually only feature asian actors/tress, even when roles should logically be played by white ones, and the Japanese public doesn't seem to care that Hollywood does the reverse.
So yeah, I guess it's just a SJW pet peeve.

Anyway, Scarlett looks the part (they took note about the design) and their Batou is impressive too.

I specifically looked this up and apparently in the manga it is said that that both the mayor and the main character prefer European bodies for some reason. So it is in fact accurate, if my information is (I have no idea, never read any Manga).

On the other hand Japan is extremely xenophobic :)

Japanese anime/manga very often present european looks as attractive, alongside asian ones. Many of the shows also have european people as main characters. (some even have mostly european characters in the first place...)

Not only xenophobic but also very nationalistic (up to the point of revisionist).
And yet they manage to be more tolerant about their own culture being adapted for foreign audience.

So yeah, again, I guess it's a SJW pet peeve.

(notice : I tend to be purist and prefer to have any production respects its origin, so I do actually prefer to have adequate actors for roles ; I just don't share the hysterics or the laser-guided obsession with very specific races that this group has)

I was there for a month and I didn't see 1 sign of xenophobia anywhere. I realize it's anecdotal, but you'd think if the whole country was so extremely xenophobic, I'd have seen signs of that somewhere.

Is that actually true? I'm hearing it a lot recently, and it feels more like anti-weeb backlash than something based in any actual experience of the Japanese or their attitude towards foreigners. know that the Japanese don't bother to disguise how they feel about foreigners, at least not in the same way Westerners do, but it's a far cry from bluntness to bigotry.

They have, I believe, the fastest aging population on the planet, but they do not seem to take this as a reason to change their very strict immigration policy. That looks like a strong solid indicator to me..
I once watched a youtube video from Vice which was also very enlightening on the matter. During the Japanese occupation of Korea a lot of forced labor got shipped to Japan. Some of those Koreans stayed after the war and live in Japan to this day. And in recent years a strong movement has build up which wants those Koreans evicted. From an already very homogeneous Japan with labor shortage issues. And those are people as alike to Japanese as you will get.
You say Japanese don't disguise their feelings about foreigners. In the West we have decades of public discussion and shaming of racism under our belt, which may cause such disguise. But they also caused a change of culture and as a consequence of minds. I don't think something like that happened ever in Japan, or the whole of East Asia, which as I have gathered here and there is also as a whole pretty racists. Lighter skinned northern Asian versus darker skinned southern Asians. Not to mention attitudes towards black people. I once read on Cracked that black leads are a big problem for the Chinese movie market.

So I buy it. But it is fair to say that few have the background to know what is really up in Japan.

Nope I would not think so. Especially not in Japan where they did such a splendid job of keeping foreigners out in the first place. What kind of signs are you thinking of?

Nah, it's somewhat true (and that's coming from a self-declared nippophile). Japan is quite xenophobic and racist.
Of course it's quite a bit more complex (as usual), because it's also a society with immense social pressure to conform, an island country that had a very long spell of extreme isolationism (followed by a spell of extreme imperialism) and the single most homogenous population on Earth (or at least in the highest contenders). So it draws from multiple sources and express itself in some unique ways - for which you also need to add that it's a culture HEAVILY reliant on "face-saving" and communication based on context and non-spoken understanding.
It's pretty different in some aspects from the kind of racism we are used to in the West.
