Giant Death Robots With Atomic Bombs

General Notes
  • I have progressed about thirty turns from the last update, but I have not had time to complete the writeup due to the US holiday weekend (which was spent with family). I will hopefully have completed in the near future.
  • I seem to have reached Photobucket's bandwith limit. Does anyone have any suggestions for better / higher bandwith photo hosting?

Good work so far, but finishing tradition is too strong to pass up, a free GG is not of comparable benefit even for Sweden.
I 100% agree. That said, Honor has one more selling point: I always max tradition and (very) rarely take honor. Since I almost never play domination games, this seems as good of a time as any play with policies that I don't normally take.

Did Hiawatha attack you at all or did you diplomatic maneuvers forestall that invasion. I would have let them attack to clear some units and maybe grab the cap. Your CBs are not well positioned for defense btw, The two western most ones should be one tile further behind river, you want them to cross the river on first turn to get into cap range and be open to your counterattack. But who am I to say, you are doing much better then me in my current game.

But with lots of trade routes between you it might have been better to avoid war for now, XB will make short work of those red headed punks if out forest and given the current shortage of forest in Sahara, that should not be to hard to pull off.

Very helpful info here in general, especially regarding defensive setups. I did forestall Hiawatha's invasion and eventually got crossbows and declared war myself when the Shoshone asked me to join them. As you predicted, the red headed punks have not fared well in the Sahara. I have taken one city and hope to claim the capital. Will elaborate more during the writeup.

Barack Obama likes this.
I am humbled that I have attracted the praise of one of the most powerful men in world on my second narrative.

I'll watch the movie when it comes out, OP.
Thanks!

FlickR, or Imgur would be good probably. With FlickR, you get one terrabyte for free, and I don't know if Imgur even has any limits. Both of those were suggested by someone in my thread when I was having the same problems with Photobucket(which I still have sometimes).

Edit: And by the way, make sure you don't delete anything when you're just meeting the bandwidth limit. Deleting doesn't do any good.

Awesome! Thank you so much, this is a huge help. I should have the next update up in a few minutes, and then I'll edit it to add screenshots after I've gotten FlickR/Imgur set up.

Great Story :D , I think I might as well join in the conversation, as for file hosting, I personally use Imgur. With the basic account, the only downside is that pictures are automatically deleted after 6 months of not being viewed... and you don't even need an account if you don't want one

Note: This entry will be edited to include screenshots once I have a new photo hosting account set up. Special shout out to Heerlo and ekat2468 for the photo hosting suggestions. EDIT: Screenshots are now added.

●●●●●Obtained Warrior Code Policy●●●●●
Fear of the imperialistic European & Asian powers probably had a profound effect on Camelot’s culture and social policies. Obviously, King Lancelot and his Knights of the Round Table would have been pledging to uphold “truth, justice, and the Swedish equivalent of the American way” long before First Contact, because that’s just common sense for any culture. However, by the year 1000 AD the fear of external domination drove the creation of a clear “Warrior Code” to provide guidance in morally questionable situations and/or situations involving lots of beer and explosives (+25% great general rate, free great general). Based on what I know of Swedish culture, the code probably has one inviolable law that takes priority over all other guidance: “A true warrior protects the freedom of others at any cost. No action can be considered unjustified and no degree of force can be considered excessive if it was performed to secure another’s freedom.”

The Swedish warrior code eventually became the philosophical foundation of all American foreign policy, if I am remembering my high school civics class correctly.

●●●●●Great General To City-State●●●●●
The free Great General that appeared on the map when I selected the warrior code policy was named “Hernan Cortes.” As I learned from an episode of the reality TV show “Buried Treasure,” the real Cortes from history was a loveable old scamp known for his eccentric hobbies such as antique hunting, gold-plundering, and the mass-enslavement-and-murder-of-the-innocent. I can only assume that he appeared on the main map after resigning in protest over the new hobby-limiting warrior code.

I observed Cortes make his way to the city-state of Riga, presumably to conquer it for himself so that he could enjoy his hobbies in peace. Shortly thereafter, Cortes disappeared from the map and Sweden’s influence with Riga rose by 90 points.

The most logical explanation is that King Lancelot personally tracked down the wayward general and slew him in a sword-duel before Cortes’s plan could be carried out. This epic clash of arms most likely occurred on a narrow, cinematic ledge atop Riga’s tallest tower and in full view of thousands of Riga’s cheering citizens. I have been unable to confirm whether a bald eagle shrieked overhead while General Cortes fell to his death, but the evidence suggests that this is likely.

●●●●●Africa Wars II: The Iroquois Strike Back●●●●●
Sweden’s already Guarded relationship with the neighboring Iroquois continued to deteriorate until the Great Chief abruptly marched a large Mohawk warrior invasion force to the Swedish border. Since the famous Oracle of Camelot failed to produce peace this time, it is reasonable to conclude that Great Chief Hiawatha’s anger was the result of some negative experience at the Oracle. My best working theory is that Hiawatha asked the Oracle three different versions of the same question and received three wildly different responses (“Signs point to yes,” “Outlook not so good,” and “Reply hazy try again.”)

It was at this time that the Shoshone must have presented Sweden with irrefutable evidence that the Iroquois were harboring Weapons of Mass Destruction (such as “My spirit animal told me about the WMD’s while I was overdosing on hallucinogenic mushrooms”). Naturally, Sweden could not ignore such convincing evidence and agreed to jointly declare war on the Iroquois with the Shoshone. Sweden didn’t even ask for 10 turns to prepare; the situation was dire enough that war needed to be declared NOW.
Spoiler :
tRhE1gW.jpg

Sweden led the heroic Coalition of the Willing by sending numerous regiments of Longswordsmen and Crossbowmen to target the Iroquois's cities and most powerful units. The Shoshone preferred to use a somewhat less conventional strategy that involved sending a few inferior units to wander randomly around the Iroquois’s territory like enthusiastic but completely ineffectual puppies. This Swedish-Shoshone combination proved unstoppable on the battlefield and the Iroquois lost regiment after regiment of Mohawk Warriors. Naturally, the great foreign powers were not about to ignore an opportunity like that.

The Netherlands and Polynesia immediately reiterated their support for the Coalition of the Willing. Both declared friendship with Sweden and the Shoshone and denounced the Iroquois. Meanwhile, the Germany-Korea-Venice alliance declared friendship with Iroquois and denounced most of the Coalition of the Willing. As of 1400 AD, eight of the nine known nations are split into two sharply divided alliances. Only the Ottomans remain neutral.

●●●●●Other Events●●●●●
  • Two new nations discovered me: Venice and Korea.
  • Two Alliances: Germany/Korea/Venice + Hiawatha vs. Netherlands/Polynesia + Shoshone/Sweden. I have been denounced by all members of the first alliance except Korea.
  • Germany (the #1 soldiers civ) ended the war I bribed him to declare on Hiawatha as soon as peace was possible. The Ottomans are continuing the war, however.
  • Starting to encounter happiness issues due to population growth in existing cities. Perhaps I’m too familiar with building tall empires, and not skilled enough with wide ones.
  • I acquired my 2nd honor policy, Military Tradition (+50% experience)
  • Shoshone asked me to go war with Hiawatha, and I agreed.
  • I lost my super-crossbowman with March, etc, but gained another great general due to combat.
  • I have taken and razed the Iroquois’s smallest (worthless) city. They still have one more city + their capital.

Wow, so the Oracle actually was just a Magic 8-Ball! I never would've known that if you hadn't been writing your totally factual history story.
Anyway, this is continuing to be a great read! Keep up the good work, please!

First of all, I also use imgur. It works really well.

I'm surprised the shoshone were so eager to join the coalition of the willing. They seem to be being so nice right now it might actually be worth it to not betray them until the enemies of your coalition are free. Also, Sweden honor might actually be pretty decent. Happiness is a huge problem to early warmongering, so being able to ally city states with a ton of great generals seems like a pretty good combo. It's still probably worse than tradition, as everything seems to be right now, with every civilization on every starting condition, sadly, but it seems like you're getting honor to work. Nice job!

One thing I noticed is that you gave your cb march. While march is a nice upgrade, if you can get the lvl 3 open terrain or lvl 3 rough terrain upgrades, you can then get the +range and +1 attack per turn upgrades, which are superior to everything else an archer can hope to get. Now, this comes at the cost of some other nice short term promotions (march and cover), but even so, I think it's probably still worth going straight for that.

Indeed. Sometimes it just takes an American's perspective and ingenuity to really change the way we look at old, unquestioned ideas.

Thanks, I will start taking lvl 3 open terrain instead of march. I also agree about the Shoshone. Attacking them would be diplomatic suicide now, since they are now friends with almost everyone who is friendly towards me.

Great Story :D

 Great update!
Thanks, this encouragement really means a lot to me. It's been probably 10 years or more since I've done any creative writing to speak of, and it is reassuring to know that the community is receiving it well.

I have created an Imgur account and images I've edited the last post to include screenshots. I'll hopefully go back and replace the photobucket images with Imgur images at some point. Also, here is one more image that didn't make it into the writeup, but I nevertheless found amusing. (I rejected this offer, btw. Something about it didn't seem quite right)

Update #7: Turns 130 – 145 (1550 AD)

●●●●●Military Tradition Policy●●●●●
If my analysis is correct, Weapons of Mass Destruction in the Renaissance Era were most likely designed to either 1) spread a particularly virulent plague to a target population or 2) cause a society to collapse into anarchy and despair through some insidious means of limiting restaurants to reasonable portion sizes. The importance of stopping such a devastating threat would no doubt have earned great respect for the military men responsible for defending against it. These social influences would most likely have led to the rise of a proud Swedish “Military Tradition” (+50% bonus to experience earned). Although specific military traditions vary by culture, we can safely assume that Swedish citizens would begin to expect prior military service from high ranking civilian leaders, as well as yellow ribbons and “Support Our Troops” signs on all civilian wagons and horse-drawn carriages.

●●●●●Expansion of the Coalition of the Willing●●●●●
Around 1400 AD, Sweden’s newly appointed soldiers-turned-diplomats established contact with two previously undiscovered members of the Coalition of the Willing, Ethiopia and Carthage. Shortly afterwards, the Netherlands, Polynesia, and Ethiopia all joined the righteous war against the Iroquois. This was almost certainly due to Sweden’s more security-focused emissaries and their efforts to spread the word about the Shoshone’s irrefutable evidence of the Iroquois’s Weapons of Mass Destruction. Fortunately, the multiple declarations of war indicate that all reasonable nations responded to the terrifying news appropriately (“Which mushrooms allowed the Shoshone see these weapons? Hmm, I’d better (munch) verify their results just to be (munch, munch)… whoa… duuuuuuuuuuude… who did you want us to declare war on again?”).

●●●●●Liberation of the Iroquois●●●●●
This joint five-nation military operation’s top priority would naturally have been to locate and dispose of the Weapons of Mass Destruction, so I assume that the “William the Conqueror” Great General unit that appeared represents Sweden’s chief weapons inspector of the time. Using this historical simulation, I observed Inspector William travel to each of the Iroquois’s three cities during his search. Sadly, we must conclude that the Iroquois leaders refused to submit to a complete inspection – which thereby proved their own guilt – because William’s security detail was forced to eliminate all traces of the oppressive Iroquois regime. The evidence is not entirely clear on what happened next, although the most likely result is that the liberated Iroquois citizens thanked Inspector William profusely for his efforts and welcomed the Swedes as liberators.

●●●●●Great General To City-State●●●●●
The independent nation of Ragusa claims most of the land between the Iberian peninsula and the Alps mountains, though of course it still lacks the military might of one of the Great Empires. I observed Inspector William cross the Mediterranean Sea and arrive at this idyllic country shortly after the oppressive Iroquois regime had been eliminated No doubt William had journeyed there while pursuing a lead on the still-undiscovered Weapons of Mass Destruction. When Inspector William arrived, Ragusa immediately agreed to an alliance, increased Sweden’s influence by 90 points, and promised to send all of its resources to Camelot for the foreseeable future. The historical simulation did not provide any official explanation for these generous actions, but it seems that that Ragusa was almost irrationally eager to demonstrate its cooperation with Inspector William’s weapons investigation for some reason.

●●●●●Construction of the Forbidden Palace●●●●●
The Great Engineer Wilbur Wright appeared in Camelot in 1440 AD. If I recall correctly, Wilbur’s full story is described in more detail in E. B. White’s Charlotte's Web, but I will fill in the most important details here. Essentially, Wilbur was a pig of human intellect who was saved from the slaughterhouse through the assistance of an equally brilliant spider named Charlotte. Wilbur later went on to design the legendary Swedish Forbidden Palace, which is sort of like a combination of the White House and the US Capitol Building, only with far more in the way of statues and medieval weaponry. The Forbidden Palace was completed in Camelot in 1450 AD (-10% unhappiness, +2 delegates).
Spoiler :
lh3hMZV.jpg

Wilbur then began work on his next project, “The Notre Dame,” but it was never completed. Sadly, Wilbur perished in a tragic case of mistaken identity during the preparation of the royal winter sausage festival. Without the pig’s brilliance, the Notre Dame project suffered delay after delay and was finally scrapped for 85 gp after the Carthaginians completed a Notre Dame-like building of their own.

●●●●●Other Events●●●●●
  • Tech: I discovered Astronomy, Printing Press, and I am a few turns from Economics. I am 2nd in literacy behind the Venetians.
  • Policies: I took Rationalism. I really wanted to go further down Honor, or at least Patronage, or possible even complete Tradition, but Rationalism is just too good to pass up. Even for someone looking for a different policy experience.
  • The Netherlands, Polynesia, Ethiopia all declared war on Hiawatha, along with the Shoshone and myself. Hiawatha has been completely eliminated. I captured the capital and destroyed two worthless cities in the Sahara.
  • The Netherlands, Ethiopia, Shoshone, and Carthage declared war on Korea (Ethiopia eventually made peace). I did not join this war. The Ottomans (who are not part of either major alliance) also declared war on Korea and conquered most or all of Korea’s cities. Korea had already conquered the Indians before I had met them in addition to building the Great Library, so this was probably no small accomplishment. The Ottomans now possess three original capitals.
  • I Met New European/Asian Civilizations: Carthage and Ethiopia. Both have declarations of friendship with most of the Coalition of the Willing, so positive diplomatic relations are likely.
  • I completed the Forbidden Palace with a great engineer (Wilbur Wright). I then attempted to hard-build the Notre Dame but was beaten by Carthage.
  • I gifted my latest Great General (William the Conqueror) to ally the city-state of Ragusa in Spain/France, my 3rd city-state ally.
  • I upgraded my one trireme to a caravel and sailed across the Atlantic Ocean. I then encountered Byzantium and Portugal in America. I am not sure what to make of either civilization yet. EDIT: Portugal is based in Eastern Asia; I mistakenly believed she was based in America from the position of her explorers.

●●●●●Miscellaneous: Strategic Direction●●●●●
I am now at peace with the world again. I need to decide whether to declare war again soon, and if so, whom to target. Here are my options:
  • The Shoshone and the Carthaginians are nearby, but they have declarations of friendship with most of my allies. The Shoshone also have a declaration of friendship with me. I don’t really consider either to be a valid target.
  • The Ottomans do not have strong relations with anyone, but they are somewhat far away. I have to cross the Mediterranean and march through Carthage to reach them. They also have ships near my water trade routes.
  • Germany and Venice are on very poor terms with the rest of world and with me, but they are in central Asia and Northwest Asia respectively. Reaching them will be very challenging.
  • Or I could build in peace for now until I have more advanced and more mobile soldiers. Given the map conditions, this is what I am leaning towards.

Great story so far. I love the weapon inspectors little adventure in ragusa. He must have scared the crap out of them :)

Are Portugal and Byzantium valid targets right now? You might be able to conquer one or both before you upgrade to those sweet, sweet Uniques.

Thanks!

Byzantium is a valid target, but not Portugul. ((I incorrectly reported that Portugul is in the Americas; in fact, Portugul is in eastern Asia. I encountered her units around America and mistakenly thought she was based there.)) I agree with you; Byzantium / someone on the American continent is probably the easiest and least complicated target for continuing conquest.

Suleiman's getting too strong, you have to attack him.
Agreed, he's expanding fast and I need to slow him down. Right now I have no navy except for the one caravel, so he will decimate me and my trade routes if I attack him immediately. Once I get Navigation and build enough ships to defend my shores, I think I can launch a land attack with a reasonable chance of success. Thankfully, he's near a couple grumpy & very powerful civs like Germany.

------------

Either plan seems to require a decent navy to support it, so for now I think I'll focus my resources on getting Navigation and building a reasonable navy. Once I have a few frigates, I'll take stock of the situation. If Suleiman has continued to expand unchecked, I'll have to hit him then and there. If Suleiman's advance has been halted, I'll try to conquer something in the Americas while I build up an overwhelming army/navy to crush Suleiman when I'm ready.

You're playing this game really impressively diplomatically and scientifically at the moment. How are you so good in tech when you've been focusing your energies on conquest? I can focus on tech pretty well normally, but I'm not sure how to warmonger at the same time and still keep up with the other civs in the long run.

Hmm, now that you mention it I think I've been focusing my energies on tech and the economy, and only doing conquest when it's convenient. The early Composite Bowmen rush got me a couple of extra cities and really helped my base development. Since then I've been doing mostly the same thing I do for peaceful tall empires, except I also attempt to attack whenever I get a tech jump over my opponent (e.g. crossbowmen vs. mohawk warriors).

I get a lot of gold from all of the resources around the cities in Africa, and my capital has fantastic production, so I can upgrade units and churn out a few new ones without much disruption to the tall development. I'm not sure whether these same strategies would be effective if I had started in a less fertile spot.

Update #8: Turns 145 – 200 (1860 AD)

●●●●●The Thirty Turns of Peace●●●●●
No weapons of mass destruction were found in the Iroquois lands, but the historical simulator suggests that Sweden largely escaped blame for the misunderstanding (i.e. no warmongering diplomacy penalties with most nations). Like most reasonable people, global leaders seemed to understand that everyone makes mistakes and they were happy to overlook a senseless war caused by bad intelligence reports.

A thirty-turn era of peace had begun. Suleiman and Bismarck still declared random wars with the frequency of addicts seeking their next fix, but their soldiers were too bogged down by city-states to damage anyone of importance.
Spoiler :
EXAMPLE: A Thirty Turn Roadblock

Klv6jlR.jpg

I deduce from Sweden’s social and military shifts that its people clearly recognized the inevitable danger of these aggressive behemoths. Social values shifted even more in favor of defending the liberty of others (Freedom Ideology, Civil Society, Avant Garde, Arsenal of Democracy). The once infantry-heavy military shifted the bulk of its resources to designing and building state-of-the-art frigate battle flotillas. Now that the city-states are beginning to fall, the Swedes are no doubt praying that their preparations were enough.

●●●●●Final First Contacts●●●●●
Sweden threw even more resources behind its exploration efforts, no doubt fueled by rumors a “Lost Civilization” that understood freedom in a way that no foreign nation could even begin to comprehend. Overland scouts soon made contact with the Asian nations of Arabia and Spain, while intrepid Swedish seafarers established relations with the Babylonians and the Zulu in the Americans.

With 21 of the 22 civilizations discovered, Swedish experts probably began to dismiss the rumors of the undiscovered perfect society as mere myths. But history has a way of saving the best for last:

Scq3eJw.png

Yes I am, Mr. President. Yes, I am.

●●●●●American-Swedish Relations●●●●●
Soon after the first Sweden-American encounter, Sweden declared war on America. After a careful analysis, I believe that this is the most likely sequence of events that led up to the war:

The initial meeting between President Washington of America and King Lancelot the Two-Hundred-and-Somethingth of Sweden is just a minor footnote in American history, but I have no doubt that this was a major historical event for the Swedes. King Lancelot probably got down on one knee and begged Washington to allow Sweden to become part of America. “Please,” he surely implored, “We foreigners are not as competent as Americans, and we need you to interfere in our daily lives whenever you see fit.”

President Washington was a compassionate man, but he also knew that the self-reliant American people would be reluctant to accept any immigrant group that was not already associated with its own delicious style of ethnic cuisine. “If you wish for Sweden to become part of America,” Washington proclaimed in that firm but fair way of his, “You must prove that you will not be a burden. Let us engage in a gentlemanly, civil war, ideally during the mid-1800’s, so that I may assess your ability to defend yourselves.”

“If I find your battle skills worthy, then you will also be required to pass a test on American History and Law that most natural-born American citizens cannot pass,” Washington added. “But don’t worry, it’s not that difficult.”

●●●●●The Civil War●●●●●
Sweden launched its invasion soon thereafter, dispatching three regiments of Caroleans (Swedish Unique Riflemen) and three frigate flotillas to America’s shores. America’s forces, in contrast, relied on more primitive weapons that varied from Gatling guns to clubs and farm implements (i.e. “Warriors”). Nevertheless, the Americans’ ingenuity and can-do spirit more than compensated for their inferior equipment. Perhaps no unit exemplifies this better than the American warrior band (yes, warriors) that defeated an elite regiment of Swedish Caroleans in combat. This is not a joke. (Full details are in the spoiler box below).
Spoiler :

On the turn before this screenshot was taken, the American warrior indicated by the red arrow was positioned one hex to the left (where the Carolean is now). A well-promoted Swedish Carolean attempted to attack the warrior’s position from the ocean, which the combat predictor thought would be an easy slaughter. However, the warrior did manage to survive with a few hit points left. Since all of my frigates had already acted, the Carolean was left embarked on the ocean and vulnerable. A single American trebuchet and the basic city attack were sufficient to sink the defeated Carolean forever. The (new) Carolean in this picture later landed on the hex unopposed after the warrior moved away.

●●●●●Other Notes●●●●●
  • Discovered: Old World: Spain, Arabia
  • Discovered: New World: Babylon, Zulu, America! (turn 152)
  • Adopted Freedom. Venice adopted Order. No other ideologies have been adopted. Venice is only produce 2 more tourism per turn than I am, but I am receiving 10 unhappiness from public opinion.
  • Founded World Congress. Passed World Fair, Embargo: Venice (take that, you money-grubbing Order-loving communists!)
  • Completed Leaning Tower & Porcelain Tower
  • Beaten to the Globe Theater with 2 turns remaining (stupid Venice). Scrap converted to 267 gp.
  • New Friends: Ethiopia, Carthage. Of course, most of my friends have no gold to make research agreements with. I usually lend them money whenever they get with 100 gp or so, but it doesn’t happen often.
  • Policy: Philanthropy, Secularism, Scholastism, Civil Society, Avant Garde, Arsenal of Democracy. Also Universal Healthcare (don’t look at me like that – the remaining Tier 1 freedom policies are terrible, I needed happiness, and I have no stock exchanges so I didn’t take Capitalism)
  • Gave 1,000 gp to Hanoi in order to receive extra military units. Hanoi seems to have a particular fondness for gifting me (non-unique) Riflemen and Lancers.
  • There is no coal in all of Africa. There is no coal in any of the (surviving) city-states. There is no coal within the borders of any of my adjacent neighbors.
  • Germany is continuing to build its “Axis of Evil” alliance to counter my “Coalition of the Willing.” The Ottomans remain independently happy to kill everybody.
  • Arabia frequently declares war on my friends the Netherlands and Ethiopia, but is apparently too weak and puny to have any effect.
  • Great Scientist: James Clerk Maxwell - move from 1 turn to dynamite to 1 turn to railroad, which brought me to the modern era (and Freedom)
  • A couple of city-states have been conquered, maybe cities, but no capitals.
  • Barbarian pirates destroyed most of my trade routes before I built my navy. I was unprepared for when they were suddenly able to cross deep ocean.
  • The Shoshone (my adjacent neighbors) refused to renew our declaration of friendship.
  • I am rushing to build a handful of extra Caroleans before they become obsolete.

●●●●●SOOOOOOOOON!!!!!!●●●●●
  • I have a tech lead. I have flight before anyone else. Will build Great War bombers as soon as this batch of Caroleans is complete. Then the world will tremble in the face of my unstoppable liberty!

EDIT: It's only been 5 turns since this writeup, but enough has happened that I think an addendum is necessary. Events will be covered in more detail in my next writeup.
  • Venice declared war on the Shoshone, removing the threat of immediate war from the Shoshone (they are the ones that refused to renew friendship)
  • I NOW SHARE BORDERS WITH THE OTTOMANS after Suleiman conquered the Carthaginians
  • I completed the Statue of Liberty. Production in all cities is up substantially, and with the new policies happiness is under control again.
