Give me some local slang!

Don't "newfies" pronounce it like "Noowfunlund"? Sounds pretty strange.
Most Canadians that I've heard say "NOO-fund-lund;" Newfoundlanders themselves say "NOO-fund-LAND." The "d" in "fund" is very weak, barely noticeable.

Hmm. I'm American and I pronouce it that way.

Enough with the religious jibber-jabber!

I have a mood to hear some good slang words from around the world, and from local areas and towns!

No rude words (well, PG-rated is allowed) but funny insults/put-downs, delivered in your own tongue!

So, feel free to post up some global slang words, and their meaning!

Fire away!

No rude words ? Most of the slang in romanian is dirty and sexually oriented so i've no idea what to post.

(Or at least the ones i use are like that. :mischief:)

What 'choo sayin' 'bout Birmin'am?
B6, yeah, that's Birmin'am!
Slash OZ, that's Birmin'am!

I could go on with this tune. It's a song about Birmingham's chav life, sung quickly with a chav accent.

My dad sells ice cream in your hometown, I believe.

really a big diffrence, but it cames from the past....

Puto (masculine) means kid
Puta (feminine) means whore

more recent

Bicha means a line of people, but also (with Brazilian influencies) means gay.

Or in Italian, puttana. :)

We don't have any unique slang words in Toronto, but we do have a specific way of pronouncing the name of the city. If someone pronouces it as spelled, they are automatically deemed an oustsider. The proper local way is to lose the first 'o' and second 't' to yield "Tronno".

There's also an interprovincial discrepency on what consititutes a "case" of beer. In most provinces a case has 12 beer (in Canada the plural of "beer" is "beer"), in Ontario a case has 24 beer. In some other provinces, 24 beer is known as a "flat". Everyone in Canada will also refer to 24 beer as a "two-four" (real creative).

A case with 12 bottles of beer in Finnish is mäyräkoira meaning a sausage dog.

A case is 24 in the States as well.

This thread is very useful in picking up tons of quotable speech!

:)

When heading oot to the offie to scadge a few tinnies, you'll have to bodyswerve the many fleetoes of neds that are hinging aroon the toon!

:D

 Brilliant. Tinnies is actually relatively new to me. At my last work a guy would always ask if I wanted a 'tin', though it didn't take long to work out what he meant.

Take-away for grabbing a few beers at an off-licence rather than a pub, is about all I can think of right now.

:crazyeye: Is that even English, or is that another language that happens to use words that are also used in English?
