Warlord
I was cruising around San Francisco the other day with a friend.
Our hometown of Blackhawk, CA, was hit by a heatwave. Temperatures were an unbearable 125 degrees. "It's gotta be global warming, man." he says. But his voice is filled with uncertainty. What he really wants to say is "It's gotta be global warming, right?"
I sorta nod, stoned and loaded on Xanax, I don't really want to argue.
It's hard being a limousine liberal.
But the exchange was interesting to me. Global warming is an undeniable fact, based on scientific opinion, and shouldn't be something to be uncertain about. But time and time again, I have realized that at best, global warming is somewhat accepted by most of society, and at worst skeptically annoyed by the concept. But why? Most people are stupid, would be the easy answer.
But why, really? Liberals have sabotaged the concept of global warming.
Every year, our town has been hit by a heatwave. It's not due to global warming, but weather patterns. But time and time and again, I've found myself annoyed when things like tsunamis, hurricanes, monsoons, earthquakes, and cold winters are used as "evidence" for global warming. As someone who believes in global warming, such "evidence" only annoys me. And I can imagine that someone skeptical would simply get turned off the concept in general.
The inherent problem with global warming, as a cause, is that it has been dominated whiners, hypocrites, and self-righteous douches. Most people who originally have rallied behind the cause of global warming didn't do to help the planet, they did it in the cause of righteous masturbation. They have always been environmentalists, but have signed up behind the Gore banner in order to alienate the average person and make the problem worse.
Though their official message is "Look, Global Warming is real and the longer we wait the worse off we'll be," but actually resonates as "Look, we're right. We're rich, educated, and have been right all along. You (the average person) are too stupid to see that pollution is going to destroy us all. Cut down on your destructive ways (whether you can afford to or not) while we work to cripple our domestic industry. Your way of life is primitive and archaic, you probably voted for Bush, and you better listen to us, or else. We've got politicians, scientists, and more importantly celebrities, on our side; everyone knows they know better than you."
It's not hard to see why this message doesn't exactly resonate with the American people. When we have douches like Harry Reid crying that "oil makes us sick" and Nancy Pelosi instituting a green cafeteria menu in congress, our politicians come off as nothing less than snobby. How can the average person rally behind a cause that makes them look stupid?
And the issue of our domestic industry; much of the global warming plans include cutting down on our industry, the largest polluter. Creating cars, goods, and all that other crap creates more CO2 than a graphic designer or a politician. So how do you appeal to a rural worker working at factory, by telling him that he's the cause of the problem and that his job might have to be destroyed in order to combat global warming? Is he going to listen to you? Hell no.
And this blatant hypocrisy is wearing down on a lot of people. Prius owners piss me off, because of the snobby undertones: "Hey, I'm doing my part to help the environment, you stupid, dirty hick, in your SUV." Newsflash: Not everyone's family can fit into one Prius, not everyone has enough money to buy a new car right now, and not everyone wants to be associated with being a douche. What makes matters worse is San Francisco's snobby "Carpool stickers" that give Prius owners special privileges. Global warming stickers? Stupid. Get over yourselves.
Al Gore? Global warming supporters often complain that criticism of Al Gore distracts us from the real global warming debate. Mr giant mansion owning, Lincoln Town Car Limo driving, private jet flying, $200,000 per speech giving, energy wasting, Al Gore is making the distraction himself with his hypocrisy. Yes, it's a fallacy to shoot the messenger, but Al Gore and other people distract the debate from global warming and just give more ammunition to his right-wing critics. How can they be so stupid? You're painting a big target on yourself and complaining about it.
And there's a small issue of India and China. Yes, let's make us even more worse off to compete against these two nations that are sure to swallow us whole. Yes, I know that the western world must take initiative. But how can you tell the average person that will need to make personal sacrifice that his sacrifice is in vain because China and India will continue to pollute regardless?
It's not because of conservative media. Environmental snobs have hijacked global warming, and their message will never appeal to the average American. Instead of explaining that we can save energy, while increasing efficiency and saving money, liberals have taken the path of whining and talking down.
Therein lies the main problem.
The global warming idea has become a fad. And it's hurting everyone, because global warming continues while we argue.
