Results of plebiscites announced!
The people of the Netherlands and Alsace-Lorraine voted this month to join with the Republic of Prussia, in order that they might best secure their freedom in a time of war and instability. It is expected that the regions will be granted a high degree of autonomy under Prussia's liberal constitution. After the results were announced the Chancellor issued the following statement to the press:

"Whilst we understand the concern of French provisional government for the safety of its people we point out to them that Strasbourg is a Germanic city, and that we are merely returning it to its rightful government after the French aggression of a century ago. The people of Liege have also shown their will to join with their fellow cities of the Netherlands in brotherhood with those of Prussia. Therefore, whilst we sympathise with France it would go against the spirit on which are republic was founded to deny people their right to self determination.
We have no wish to see the French people suffer economically for this loss of territory, so suggest that by way of compensation the island of Sao Miguel, currently occupied by pirates, be placed under French authority. We also are willing to end our demands for financial compensation for the loss of Prussian troops during the war, hoping instead that both countries my benefit from sharing technology."

In other economic news, industrial development slowed this month, as Russian reparation appear to have ceased.
However, growth is expected to receive a boost as austerity measures instituted at the beginning of the War of the Second Co alition against Napoleon, are relaxed and funding for luxury goods and education increases.

And you are complaining!!!! Please, i sent you 300 gold two months ago. Remember that i´m waging a war against France.

*Officials of the Ministry of Foreign affairs avoided making a clear statement on the official Austrian position on latest plebiscites in the Netherlands and Alsace Lorraine. A spokesman of the Foreign Minister's Secretary declared that results would have been preferred to being calculated with greater degree of transparency: "Under such circumstances the Prussian solution may merely serve as diplomatic patchwork (...) a powderkegg that requires a sole match to wreak havok for future generations."

*The message issued by the Imperial palace nonetheless backed Prussian action, while also not touching "delicate allegations" of Prussian foulplay during the evaluation of the votings.

By Imperial Decree the censorship laws -abolished during the time of outlawed installation of the so called "revolutionary commitee"- are to be reinstated within the domain of the Austro-Hungarian Empire as from the moment of this publication.

Direct political criticism of the Clerus, Crown and associated States is hereby subject to corporal punishment- at its lowest level.

Britain proposes:

-1000 gold payed out over 20 months.
-France must share it's technology with Britain
-Britain will also occupy the cities of Cadiz, La Coruna and Granada for incorporation within the Portugese dominion (this was agreed upon in the previous treaty).

France understands Britains demands, but 1000gold over 20 months is too much for France to manage. 500 in gold is alot of money, leaving France with virtually no scientific progress untill the dept is payed.

Britain is most welcome to incorporate Cadiz, La Coruna and Granada within the Portugese dominion. It would probably stabilize the region.

France will not object to the Prussian anexation of Netherlands and Alsace Lorraine, since we do not want to cause renewed tension with our friend in the northeast.

France understands Austrias position on the future of Florence, and we do not wish to press this matter further. A strong Austrian naval presence in the med is vital for securing shipping and commerce.

The Prussian government understands the financial hardship that prolonged war can bring to a country. This is one of the many reasons why we hope Russia will consider joining the rest of Europe in discussing how to bring a long lasting peace to our continent.

cutting from Prussian press:
"...the Prussian government should applaud the stringency of Austria in ensuring the legitimacy of our democracy. All the countries in Europe can certainly take note from that most liberal of Great Powers, the Austrian Empire. Imagine a state where the leader is elected by as many as handful of corrupt nobles. Truly Prussia has much to learn from this great bastion of liberty, where the leaders are so in tune with wishes of its population that there is no need for any form of criticism within its borders. "

hmm, pat, i can't seem to build any traders. I'd quite like some of the little guys running about, even though you find their usefulness questionable.

Hummm, the Traders get obsolete with the technological advance of Colonial Trade since this will generate most profits (nations with lots of coastal cities are beneficiated- but this also reflects the developments to global trade, away from regional trade)

(:o also did the AI mass produce traders in long games, resulting in a poorly organised military and lots of congested trade routes and roads)

Large civs wouldn't have to mind the poor yield out of trader usage since they can mass produce them- but smaller ones (such as Prussia) would have a bad in direct comparison with - say- Austria. I didn't want to give any particular unit an overweight in value, but wanted to create a balance already at production level- U chose between buildings or units, science or money (or a mix of all four). I used to play this game in loooong tedious sessions before posting the first one, and had an army of 300+: One really loses control of micromanagement, and the Russian AI had at later stages build ten extra cities and was running around with hordes of anoying traders- so they are there in the beginning but lose their importance with more eficient way of getting $.

---

I still find their use limited- if you switch to "capitalisation" you will be getting much more $$$ over time in larger cities than when U build traders. This way peaceful nations can effectively use macro-economics to stay ahead, while militaristic ones will be able to field huge armies but have little cash in hand- amazing how very few players turn to money making- most just build buildings or units, some go for technology, but noone turns to the "cash cow-cities".)

- but good that U mention it - I still have to establish trade routes for GNB3.C-almost forgot about it... that one won't have any traders, I'm afraid... :( (not enough unit slots- If Microprose only gave out the source so I could add more unit slots- just one more row *sigh*)

I know we've discussed trade units before, and we'll probably always disagree over there value or otherwise. Personally i wouldn't consider ai misuse to be overly important since anyone who's still playing civ 2 at this point has probably got to the point where they can conquer most of europe within a few years. as much fun as i found your scenario in sp, i didn't get past 1802 once. never the less, you're the designer, and you made a great scen (particularly in mp) so i will bow to your superior judgement.

no worries, the lack of traders will just force me to change my normal tactics somewhat.

Once Britain posts are we going to have our treaties all sown up then, with the exception of Russia?

Hopefully, Britain will accept the 500 cash offer. If he dont, i'm not sure where that leaves us... :(

I'm sure that the 500g plus tech is more than enough to compensate Britain, especially considering that the British are dependent on the Austrian and Prussian military to enforce any such peace agreement.

Very sorry about my late post. I've been really busy.

Britain had decided that a sum of 500 gold will be insufficent. However in support of peace we shall lower our demand to 750 gold, over 15 turns.

* Alexandria captured
* French Ship of the Line sank

The Prussian government considers 500 gold to be adequate compensation for British losses in the conflict when combined with the gains that you will make territorially. The French Republic is taking form in very difficult circumstances, we should not weigh down its people with the sins of Napoleon, lest they are forced to return to the way of war. Once again we must also insist the Russia abides with the rest of the great powers in a peace agreement for the good of all Europe's people.
