As a father of three girls, sure I agree with the law. It is a standard, held equally among all who commit that crime. In order for the law to be '********' or 'unfair' you would have to make the case that it wasnt being enforced to its current standard.

I have no problem with laws like that as long as they are equally apportioned.

If you think it overly harsh, get elected to the Georgia state congress and change it.

I only worry about the laws in my own home state and yes I am with Georgia in having a absolute age set at the age of consent. However less strict on the sentance that any offender under 21 would have to go to juvinile detention for a few months or however the state congressmen hammers it out in working these laws.

So to you a 16-year-old of one day commits a crime when he/she has sex with someone 15-year-and-364-day old?
Meaning, you can be prosecuted for sleeping with someone in your own class?

Sorry, but if they are under the age of consent and they are caught having sex. They should be tried. And how old are these teenagers having sex, most of them are over the age of consent in their local laws and some under the age of consent but have sex away from other people.

I would still very much like your point of view on the vast majority of other US state laws that require an age difference for sexual acts to be seen as statutory rape. Do you think every other state should be like Georgia, or Georgia should have the same kind of laws as every other states?

rmsharpe/mobboss - do you prefer the law that applies to most of the USA or the law that applies to Georgia?

I personally think it is wrong that this man's life is pretty much ruined - 10 years out at 17 is well the worst time - for what is a relatively minor offense. It is all well and good saying the law is the law, but sometimes laws are just wrong. Hopefully this will be challenged more seriously in court before another young man has his life ruined.

Lowest age of consent I've seen is 12, in Medevil times there generally wasn't even one, and people were left to decide for themselves, that's not to say that they didn't condmen rape of an adult and a minor, they just used their common sense in determining what was considered taboo and what was considered fair play. In a modern society though a law that is set up to protect minors, may in actual fact be abused by judges to basically harm minors, a ten year sentence for something as minor as this is to my eyes quite ethically unnacceptable, but then I tend to judge rules more on common sense than the absolutely abritrary placing of age barriers into the equation, this is not what the law was put in place for and to my mind it's shockingly indicative of what can happen when you get a moron in a position of power. in ireland, the age is 15 for males and 17 for females, and its to be leveled off at 16 for each next year i think. now that to me sounds perfectly fine, and not becauls i'm 15, but because everyone i know thats 15+ is sensible enough to use contraception.

IIRC, in japan there is no age of concent. well thats what i've read anyways. sickening really, but meh.. 15/16 sounds fine to me.
