Going Viking (Conquests)

That's Sween32 leaderhead. I can look out the link for you if you'd like? The leaderhead was also included on the PTW release of Civ III. The files RB_all.pcx, ScottishLARGE.pcx and ScottishSMALL.pcx although they are in the installation they are not actually used in the scenario. It's a small mistake on my part (I should have deleted them) but they won't cause any problems with the scenario. The Scots are actually using the Dal-Riada art files.

i shall give a look soon;

by the way, where did you find the leaderhead you use for Scottish (dir advisors => RB_all.pcx & dir icon/races => ScottishLARGE.pcx & ScottishSMALL.pcx) ? Are there other pcx available, or a flc ?

MjM
The files are Piracy-large.pcx and Piracy-small.pcx
They should be part of the Conquest's installation. On my computer they are found in
the following folder:
C:\Program Files\Infogrames Interactive\Civilization III\Conquests\Art\tech chooser\Icons

They should be picked up automatically when you load the scenario. Check first that you have unzipped the Going Viking folder to the following folder:
C:\Program Files\Infogrames Interactive\Civilization III\Conquests\Scenarios

If you have then I would try copying both Piracy-large.pcx and Piracy-small.pcx to the following folder:
C:\Program Files\Infogrames Interactive\Civilization III\Conquests\Scenarios\Going Viking\Art\tech chooser\Icons

Have you tried doing a search on your hard disk to find the files? See if you have them at all.

Which version of Conquests are you using? Is it the Civ Complete (or whatever it's called) version?

I would ask the same questions as KayEss - what version of Conquests do you have? I have Conquests with patch 1.22. No one else has had this problem so I think it must be specific to your set up. Sorry I can't be more help.

If you don't have the piracy art files then try copying another set of small and large tech chooser icons and renaming them piracy-large.pcx and pircay-small.pcx and copy them here:
C:\Program Files\Infogrames Interactive\Civilization III\Conquests\Scenarios\Going Viking\Art\tech chooser\Icons

Got a question--how do you actually take over a town in this scenario? Every time I try to with some raiders, the king unit walks up with some guys and decimates me (the king unit is 8/8 vs. my king 6/6 or something like that). I guess with 540 turns you have to just keep building up a giant army? Are you not supposed to have early wars? I was just itching to sack Aberdeen (although I love scotland in real life)!

Well in the beginning your forces won't be strong enough so you have to employ a hit and run strategy (much as the vikings did in real life). So destroy any towns you gain early on and the converted population becomes treasure units which you can then (quickly) take back onto your boats and sail away from trouble! Their king is 8/8 but he's still not impossible to kill. I actually work in Aberdeen so I'll be sure to watch out for your raids ;) Once you have a good few hirdmen you can think about taking over towns but you'll probably have to make peace as quickly as you can in order to hold on to them.

Wow--they become treasure units?! I should definitely sack and burn more often in this scenario :goodjob:

The special attack from the Berserker is VERY funny!
It's not very practical because you need a suicide protector to take the berserker into the battle field and then everybody DoW on you! But it's fun to see.
I've actually stopped researching in order not to have the Berserkers Quarters cancelled but I don't think I'll have much use for them as I am already having military difficulty with 1 opponent, let alone 5 or 6!!!

I've finally managed to kill the King (using a raider as a decoy) but Pictavia still has a lot of units... maybe I've waited too long enough to attack. I haven't been able to conquer a city with the Raiders yet... :(

I specially like the idea of making the worker actions more slow... I wonder if it shouldn't be like that in the epic game?

I'm going to release an update to this scenario so any suggestions then please let me know.

I was thinking of shifting the entire map westward and drawing in Norway and Denmark. This way I'll put the viking factions in their homelands and set them up with small kingdoms from the start (3 or 4 cities each). This way it should be easier for the vikings to build up an army and makes the viking cruise to the west a bit more of a challenge. You can also play to unify your respective country :)

I also need to hone the victory conditions maybe make it such that a specific amount of captured booty will yield victory - this should give the scenario a bit more pace.

I'll also flesh out the civilopedia and diplomacy a bit more because that's something that makes a really good scenario.

Well, finally beat this scenario (Regent, Erik Bloodaxe) with a VP victory. You were right, KingArthur, sacking and taking LOADS of captives were the way to go. I actually had a constant stream of booty going to the capital throughout the game--those Raiders are perfect for carrying it away at high speeds over roads.

Wound up taking out Northumbria and Mercia first, then East Anglia (although they escaped with a settler and put a city in inaccessible area--well, inaccessible unless you wanted to go through several civs to get them). Strathclyde was attacked and largely beaten by the Scots, who I helped and almost killed them off--they also escaped with a settler but never founded a city. Bluntnose Vikings then declared war on me for no reason, I smacked them down, and then declared war on the Welsh. Took several of their cities, raided Wessex and one of the Irish groups, and then on to victory.

Some basic points: I have to say, this is a great scenario--and very tough to beat if you're trying for a conquest or even domination. Wessex was for some reason really powerful, they keep building S#@loads of horses and just wasn't worth the effort attacking. And they expand better than the other civs as well (which is historically good). The French Vikings, as well as the Irish ones, seem like their next easiest; the two northward ones seem toughest to win with in this scenario. I think they might require lots of raiding at first.

And you CAN kill kings with raiders, you just need a lot of them. One way is to wait for the AI to start walking its kings around your territory--for some reason I had the Picts, Strathclyde, and Scots kings walking around as easy pickings. Another thing I found--the AI doesn't know your nationality if you have a raider army--or in my case, LOTS of raider armies. This was a really fun part of the scenario.

That being said, the AI--unlike in some other mods--WILL attack your armies, even if they're relatively strong (but never if they're near-perfect health).
Great job!

Hi,

I DLd the scenario a few days ago and I like it! I am having problems with the berserkers. I don't get a notice that I have produced them and then..they get bored and all Ragnarok breaks loose! Is anyone else having similar issues? Tak!

@Balam - sounds like you played like a true Viking :goodjob: Wessex start off with one extra city so that probably explains their relative strength. I wanted them to be strong as you say it's historical. Raider armies sound fun, I actually haven't tried them.

@huscarl - It's the building that is causing you the trouble. The berserker's quarters is flagged in the editor as "can meltdown". You just need to look after happiness in the city - give 'em plenty of mead.

I was thinking of making the Quarters a small wonder rather than a normal improvement to prevent the player over exploiting them - what do you think?

Here's the newer map with part of Norway and Denmark. I reckon there's space for 6 well defined viking chiefdoms. Of course now you will have to get a base in Britain, Ireland or France in order to make your raids more successful but it should add a bit more strategic depth.

Let me know what you think.
