GOTM #13 *Spoilers* Thread

Hmm. This Map is 18% larger than GOTM12. Getting anything above 11500 would be really good considering the amount of oppisition and the map type. Continents means slow domination limit.

I have started the GOTM late, but will be aiming for more realistic scores:)

Cracker left alot of cities in tundra so I would not base what is possible on this map against his score. :)

I know a 12K score on this map is possible but I did not do a hard milk, I did not build a single hospital and did not place my cities to max out the score. I just made a base milk and if 10 people pass my score I'll be happy cause that means that more people are learning new ways to play the game.

I'm actually basing it on mapstats for a few high score games, but you are right. Those are mostly deity games and can't be compared to this. Killing AI on Monarch level is just to easy and the ample food provided by Moscow and also the flood plains helps for incredibly quick expansion.

I haven't seen Cracker game, but I thought 10k was quite a good score. Makes me realise just what a bad milker I really am.

This is only my third attempt at serious milking and I must say that I learned alot from Gotm12!

Can't waite to finish this.

BTW. I there anyway to set all specialists apart form entertainers needed to keep everyone happy to taxcollectors? Micromanaging this takes ages!

Set your research to 20-40% IIRC. Go to the governor screen for any city apply to that city and every city under his control will be adjusted accordingly.

If you want a higher rate of research you have to live with tax collectors and a high rate of research unless you want blisters or carpal tunnel syndrome. :(

As far as I know, there is no sure way to do it.:( Whenever pollution hits or when the city run out of food, the computer will automatically mess up the assignment of the specialists. It doesn't matter if we use the governor or manual micromanagment, the computer will ALWAYS SCREW UP our specialists. This is the only reason why I hate milking. Most of the time, I don't even pay attention to it because in the worst case, I will end up with about 500 points lower (not a big deal).

If you can finish before 1150AD then conquest will probably easier, any later and you will be hitting domination.

I finished the game quite a bit before 1150, domination as I was setting up the last ROP rape. Getting Navigation at 310 let me grab all the islands and contain the second continent. :)

I think it's possible for CB or thefrenchzulu to get 12K in the final score. Since they finished off the Rusian early, they could use those cows to pump out extra settlers. And with their playing style, they could have the whole island before 10AD. Anyway, I don't know why CB wants to leave me in suspense.;)

Killing all the AI and having the whole island as territory by 10AD not to difficult;) Can't remember exactly when I have killed the Zulu, but it was close to 10AD.

Unlike GOTM12 where I never broke any treaties, I broke a few in this game:)

That's what I thought. I found that in Gotm12. I manually cleaned all pollution and adjusted each city afterwards. I go for zero science once I milk to run at 100% luxury.

Played a few turns the 1st week of november but let the game rest for a while. Was very busy and also keeping up the timeline for QSC was time consuming. Picked it up this week.

started expanding. Didn't want a very early GA, seemed a waste. BUild an ealry granary in Tenoc. and about 6 cities. By that time only Russia was bigger, so I decided they would be my first victim. Since I boxed them in they started moving warrior/settler combo's in my territory. Declared war, got a lot of free workers and took a few cities, made peace for gold and a city, Russia down to two cities.

Turned my attention towards Persia. They weren;t very powerful yet but they were on the brink of hooking up iron. Don't want no immortals on my isle! Declared war, took some cities and made peace. Persia down to Persepolis and 2 remote cities in the south.

Back to Russia. Killed them quickly. Build up some forces and turn back to Persia after the 20 turn wait. Fnish them and get 2 GL in the same turn  (1st one made into army right away) First time ever I had this happen to me!!! Use the 2nd Gl for GLighthouse.

I enter the right after the war and turn my attention towards Zululand. They are more remote than egypt but cleo is paying handsomely for my techs. Start war, pay cleo to join. in the meanwhile suicide galleys swarm th oceans and i contact the other civs. :( they are very far away, forget the quick conquest.

Nearing 500 AD, zulus down to 1 jungle city, powergraph 50% Aztecs, score twice as much as 2nd (Iro), generous tech lead over the other continent. Egypt is only 1 tech behind but that's because I'm selling them to cleo.

It's going to be easy but time consuming. NOt sure if I'll go after rome/china before egypt. Switching to republic and pushing for navigation. Not expecting a top 10 position like the last two games, I'm not very adept when it comes to ferrying games and I hate milking.

Nothing special about our playing styles.;) Have played a few deity games as the Aztecs. Somewhere on the forum there is a deity strategy called a "Tale of two Cities". Have tried it succesfully a few times. Flooding the AI with JW can be very succesfull. Especially killing all early settlers not providing them any further cities.

I also used simple JW resource denial to keep all early AI away from iron. Even Rome and China never saw iron!:) With my first galley, I dropped a settler on their territory and after some fighting and the fall of Rome, I took their iron as well.

Things are not progressing as quickly as I want them. Played 12 hours in a row yesterday (paused for pizza that's it) so I expect to be commited to an institution by my loved ones in the very near future.

after the zulus I ferried troops to china and finishes it. Rome was next. Used a GL for FP in the middle of the former roman/chinese island. The war with the romans and chinese actually saw a lot of GL. Rushed Sistine, Magelan, Copernicus and Leonardo's with them. I didn;t give contacts between the two continents so I could afford to damage my rep on my home continent. I made peace with rome for their island city and immediately took their capital.

Egypt was next. I'd had an ROP with them for ages and decided abusing it would be the quickest way to finish egypt. Positioned my knights next to his 2 saltpeter towns and some ohter ones and took 4/5 cities in one turn. Took another smaller one and discovered mil. tradition. With a mass upgrade to cavalry it was over a few turns later. got another GL and used it for Adam S. It's 1200 AD now and ferrying time :(

Not quite sure what to do, conquest/domination or just diplo/space/cult on my own island. takes longer but saves me from filling endledd streams of boats......

Looking back I think I should have gone to war a lot sooner. Maybe taking Persia before russia because they were weaker and killing egypt a lot sooner because their territory was so close to Tenoc. Ah well, too late now.

4000 BC - I suspect everyone will take the default location. I wonder if everyone will get Masonry for popping the hut?

3500 BC - This is going to be one of the crammed large maps, I have already spotted another border. I have found Russia. Persia shows up at 3000BC. Egypt shows up at 2750 BC. Zulu show up in 2630 BC.

1250 BC (I) The Japanese have been destroyed! Ouch, I rarely see any civ die that early.

690 BC - Someone made first contact with Rome, either Russia or Persia did it. I then make contact with China from Rome - had to give them a tech, but they are way behind.

420 AD - The real wars begin - Egypt allies with Rome vs. us. I sign a deal with Russia to attack Egypt. 30 years later and China allies with Egypt vs. us.

460 AD - Our golden age begins. 20 years later and Zulu / Persia peace treaty - I have the hard decision on getting Persia involved. 10 years later and I pay Rome pocket change to end the phony war.

530 AD - Russia back stabs us, and signs a peace treaty with Egypt. 10 years later, and I sign a peace treaty with China - the only damage was I lost a couple of workers. I didn’t even realize Egypt / Zulu were still at war, but then sign a peace treaty.

610 AD - Well the weak Egyptians pay the price - they are dead, no leader from the war :(
Well we get the prime target - Sun Tzu. Will the cascade let me get Sistine also?

700 AD - The luckiest suicide galley I have even had finds the other continent - first contact India. They are still in the ancient age. The rest of the civs are close to our continent is tech. I plan to hold off contract and barter till navigation.

860 AD - (I) Leo's Workshop is ours.

940 AD - The moment I have been waiting for - WAR, Russia starts the war. I pay Persia $300 to declare war on Russia. My problem is Russia is scattered all over the map, and I want to clean up the south first.

1260 AD - The solid Russians have been destroyed. I knew it would take awhile, to many southern cities. In addition, 3 scattered island cities, and core cities had an obscene amount of defenders. The good news - I now own The Pyramids, Sistine, The Great Lighthouse and a permanent source of spices.
(I) The English have been destroyed - the second civ destroyed by the AI.

1295 AD - OK, time for another war. I declare war on Persia, as they are small, but their cities will be productive. It was a short war that lasted until 1355 leaving them 2 odd location cities.

1395 AD - The next war begins, after the knights upgrade to cavalry and head to the south of the board. It takes just 2 turns to kill the Zulu.

1455 AD - The MPPs are starting to kick in, but China hasn't signed one. I will establish my base to attack Rome shortly. War is declared on China who dies in 1465 AD.

1520 AD - Factories start coming on-line, so the big push begins. I start with declaring war on Persia to get the one last city they own, and thanks to the RnG being rough they last until 1535 AD. However, since they had a MPP with the Iroquois, we are still at war with the Iroquois.

1525 AD - ToE completes - standard AT / Electronic grab.

1610 AD - I can tell the big event will begin, as India lands troops inside my territory. I sign a MPP with Greece to split the AI civs apart.
(I) How predictable, India declares war. How nice, Greece declares war on India. Well I didn't want this one, but Rome declares war on India. If the next couple of turns I get Greece and Rome declare war on the Iroquois.

1635 AD - I get to demand Rome leaves my territory, and war is declared :) The bad news - Greece honors the MPP and declares war on us, even though they are currently supporting us vs. the Iroquois. The Romans are dead as of 1710 AD.

1776 AD - Domination victory is achieved.

Summary - I feel I could have done better, but I got another domination victory before tanks arrived :)
Final score = 4,852.

Wierd first-time GOTM experience

I started much more slowly than the rest of y'all. I also started exploring the "wrong" direction. Looking back, though the game is not yet complete, I would say my biggest mistake was letting Russia get big rather than just stomping her quick.

Another problem I faced was lack of coastal access. Russia and Egypt's settlers were beating me to all the locations I wanted. Then it turned out that of the two cities I had on the coast, only one had access to the ocean and was not performing up to snuff. There went any shot I had of picking up the lighthouse :( .

I kept pretty good relations with everyone. Shaka couldn't resist temptation and decided to challenge the big bully to a fight. I pulled a pretty cool move here. About 10 turns into the Russo-Zulu war I ordered Shaka to remove all his forces from my territory and declared war. I managed to beat the Russian army to all of the Zulu southern holdings and significantly expanded my empire.

All this time I've fallen pretty far back in the tech race. I decide that my future security is going to depend on size. I'm also wary of Russia's higher culture rating. I decide to attack Egypt to attempt to control their two wonders. I manage to take one of their cities in a long, long long battle that eventually pulled in the Russians. I took two cities in the process and produced one GL which I'm saving for something good down the road. I made peace with Egypt after I realized I could not fight a two-front war and then eventually made peace on terms favorable to Russia.

A few more turns of peace went by and then a lone Egyptian knight started crusing through my territory. I locked up all my workers so that they'd be safe in case Egypt decided to pick another fight, but they decided to go after ?Russia?. Go figure. I let that war go on for a bit (Cathy pulled in just about all the other civs but never bothered to ask me). I do a deal to get Metallurgy for some gold and a military alliance against Egypt and take control of my third Egyptian city (the second with a wonder). I try to get to their capital but Russian and Persian troops contoled all the tiles around the town. :( Russia took control of their last city on the main continet. I plan to make peace with Egypt for some tech once my current deal with Russia expires.

I'm in the 1400s right now and I've been in the histographic lead the whole time, though I'm lagging in tech and many of the key demographics. I just brought banks online in most of my cities and I think my commercial power may be enough to bring me back into parity. I'm one or two techs shy of the Industrial Age, and I think my goal at this point is a diplomatic victory. I'm going to build up some homeland defense to ward off any AI attacks and do what I can to get up to the UN, and spring my GL then.

I'll keep ya posted!

I must say that Aztec are a great civ to play. If they had industrius perk aswell they would be godlike.
I'm a civ fan from the beggining, but my job & familly take me the time necessary 2 complete any GOTM. I play couple of hours a week at work & even less at home. I almost took a vacation just 2 finish this game.
Since this GOTM is on lower difficulty level, I decided to wait with GA & build some archers. By the time I had 3'rd city(second was from a hut, hehe) I had enough archers to take out Moscow. Most of my early age I went very, VERY offensive & get my continent before 10 AD, actualy I took Rome & some Chinese cities before 10 AD. Luckily for me they build their cities out of iron reach. Btw. I got 5 leaders from Rome/Chinese war & 1 from Zulu.
This was the fun part of the game. Soon I start making mistakes with wrong tech & wonders. I knew I won't need cathedrals but out of a habit I built ...
I hit GA after I built Leonardo in aprox 450 AD & 8 turns before navigation. Here I made the biggest mistake cos with enormous production I chose banks & univs instead of large army.
So now it's 840 AD, I hit industrial & 10 cavalry full galeons are infront of greek coast.
I never milk but this time I decided to do it.

I played couple of monarch games before & every time I unfortunatelly won by culture. I need some hints like when to disband cultural buildings & how to calculate how much time do I have before I win by culture.

Great game

This was my second game of the month and my second game in Monarch diff.
Got Pottery from that 1st hut and a settler from another hut out west, just steps away from Persian terr.
An early war with Russia was very unwated and triggered GA. Was very unprepared and baredly managed to fight them off and managed to destroy one city founded close to my capitol. That had her souin´ for peace which I gladly accepted and got some tech for it even.
Prepared for war with Russia and was ready when she lost her temper next time, this time she was easy game and Moscow fell quickly and the great Russian empire followed suit.
Undeceided where to go next.
:undecide:
Was quite happy with status quo GrLi. in my home town, leading in tech and histograph. But Egypt resolved my problem and attacked with all ist´s might. A horde of one war-chariot, two warriors and a swordsman attacked the great Aztec empire, "This is going to be easy" :slay:
But apparently that was not the extent of her powers my horde of knights was massackered by pikeman in the first city I attacked and every city seemed to be packin´ about at least 6-8 pikemen. Captured that one but a stray Egyptian knight captured it right back. I had to bring all my industrial power to full military output and even had to summon in Persia and Zululand to assist to bring her to her knees. And she had around 5 or 6 cities.
Well peace reigned in the lands after that and the great Roman empire was formed at the expense of China.
Leading in tech and histograph I soon find myself up against a new "threat"... the Iroqis empire.
Ruling the second continent Hiawatha had driven all but India from the mainland and Greece had a few undeveloped cities on a few scattered islands.
At this point the decision was made "UN victory".
Crushed the Zulu in the last moments before the Industrial age, and started sharing my tech for moderate price for all who wanted (except Hiawatha of course) and supplied economical aid to Greece and India. It was too late for Greece and India was almost beaten. But the Iroqis were forced to negotiate peace with´em as everybody else were persuaded by adv. technology and GOLD to declare war on the evil empire.
I sent a few Infantry units to liberate a couple of Indian cities from the Iroquis as they were still in the middle ages and no need for a large task force. Ghandi was quite thankful to get his cities back and since everybody had now been at war with the Iroquis and I´d stood up to all agreements I had ever made I concentrated on reaching my goal.
Built the UN in 1882 and got all votes except for Hiawatha.
All in all a fairly easy game (though it doesn´t show in my score) and the only real threat ever was the Russian empire, right in the beginning.

I’ve played only to 590BC, but read this spoiler because I can’t end the game in this month.
At this time I killed all civs on my and nearest continents and switched to republic. I haven’t find other lands and think I need Navigation for reach them. DaveMcW got Nav in 310AD!? It’s very early. I don’t know could I do it or no.

I'm kicking the AI's ass so bad it has decided to cheat. I think I'll go torture one of my puppet states. :D

Tally ho!

Hi there,

I had the same thing happen to me. I found that by clicking on the little 'D' button on the box in the lower right corner of the screen, it brings up a list of names of civilizations that I can contact. The advisor screen (the one that shows the faces of the various leaders in a circle pattern) _still_ hasn't updated yet. Ah well.

Hope this helps.

You can get the AI's faces to show up by Shift/clicking on the face. A list of the other AI's shows up, just select the ones you want and they will appear. That is as long as you have established contact with them.

Quick summary so far. I am not 100% on the dates, I misplaced my log.

Started as usual with the spot I started at. I quickly built a few jag warriors and then a settler followed by a granary. The warriors allowed me to explore around a bit. I quickly found the Russians and then the Persians. I was not happy with the Russians as a neighbor, but at the time I could not do anything. I continued to explore and found the others on my continent. Traded for Iron and money…

Circa 925 BC I then upgraded most of my warriors and attacked Russia. Triggered GA wiped most of them out and then made peace. I got one leader from the Russians and made my Forbidden Palace with it.
circa 550 BC Attacked Egypt and Persia with an Alliance with the Zulu’s They quickly fell with an onslaught of swordsman. I then mopped up the remaining Russians
Circa 10 BC The Zulu’s’ are next and they were kind enough to give me my second leader. I was not sure what to do with him as the English had built the Great Lighthouse. There were no other wonders I could build so I built an Army and sent him over to visit the Chinese. By not loading any swordsman in the army yet I was able to transport the Army over the waters.
Circa 360 AD I signed a ROP with the Romans and an alliance against the Chinese. This allowed me to land my swordsman and empty Army in Roman territory next to the Chinese. I quickly moved through their territory signing a peace treaty with them to get the small island off from the coast when I knew their last city would fall to the Romans.
Circa 510 AD Time for the Romans to go, and they soon fell.

At this time I realized my big mistake. I was still in Monarchy. I switched over to Republic and researched to Navigation. Where were the other AI’s???

I found the others and they are behind in everything. I established a small beachhead on an island with the English and began ferrying over my troops. In the process of ferrying them over I discovered Military Tradition. Calvary Vs Pikeman/Phalanx This won’t be close!! :)

Circa 1100 AD I am starting on the English. I have a ROP with the Indians/Japanese/Iroquois. Hopefully they will be done for by 1300 AD. It is taking too long to get all of the troops over. So it will take a bit of time to position everything.

I will probably try to milk this one as I am beginning to approach the domination limit. I am sure others have reached the domination threshold or conquest ahead of me at this point. My only concern is time. This game is not set up for a quick milking. With all of the ocean space it requires a lot of time and ferrying of troops/workers/settlers. We’ll see.
