Cartouche Bee,

Problem solved. Thanks 4 trying to help. I actually did more than just PTW upgrade, change operating system and reinstall my entire hardisk. Not sure what when wrong. TO fix it, I uninstall PTW, reinstall v1.29. It seems that the 1.29 upgrade from PTW 'not the same' as 1.29 from separate patch. Whew, I thought I lost all I have played!

Rgds.

Thanks, I'll be watching to see if any body else needs some help on this. Glad you were able to recover the situation. :goodjob:

Kuhal, you should submit your game no matter what happens (even if you lose). Only submitting the games with outcomes you approve of screws up the statistics and comparisions, which is the whole point of GOTM.

Yes I realise this but the thing is that I don't want anyone thinking I'm only submitting my best result :)

The fact that my best result was my true one prior to reloading could is just my word I guess. Mind you, I did make incriminating posts as to my progress early on so that could be seen as proof of a sort.

I'll submit is and let the judges decide. I am sure they will look at the map and *KNOW* why I reloaded from an earlier point. My first winning civ is pretty much a bit of everyting... haha

I may get TWO first-time-evers in this GOTM. :) First, I am building Ironworks. And second, I may be able to, and have time to, milk!! (And if it's too painful, it may be my last time ever, also.)

There's nothing painful about milking. Its just incredibly boring.

I'm referring to the pain created when peeling the keyboard off my forehead from nodding off and falling forward! ;) (Or possibly from the carpal tunnel syndrome caused by hitting the Enter key repeatedly.)

I finally finished...

when fission came around, i was not too fond of one of the other races getting the UN... so i had a leader ready.

I coulda milked the game for a while adn gotten a higher score, but i think my score was higher just beceause of the early finish... well it wasnt that early 19xx

wow.... just started a war with Greece... expected 70 Cavalry to be able to take at least 4 citys before reinforcements was needed....... but no, they got wiped out by the second city.... :( I may lose now, somehow the Romans are getting about 1 tech per at most 3 turns... yet can out produce me with ships/planes/troops, and since i wasted ALL my Cavalry (70) on the tiny little Greece, i dont see how 1000s of Cavalry will even dent one of there citys... seems the game has all gone wrong in less than 100years :(

Finally made contact with the second contenent in 1255. It is now 1615 and, believe it or not, all AIs are still alive! The Iriquois nation is the dominant force on the other contenent, but it doesn't appear that any major wars have taken place over there.

Russia has dominated the home contenent the whole game. Katherine was at war almost constantly. Dispite the fact that I am positioned right next to her, she only attacked me once without too much damage. Egypt and Persia didn't fare so well. They have both been exiled to small islands. All Zulu outposts were picked off one by one, but the core remains intact - too strong and too distant to be eliminated by the evil empire.

Meanwhile I sat in the middle of it all. Troops from many nations trampled my crops, blocked my roads, and made a general neusance of themselves. That plus the constant fear that one of these days someone (mother russia) will delcare war on me and have a huge advantage because she has troops stationed near all strategic points in Aztec territory.

The good news is that I was first to make contact with the other contenent. Since then, I have been able to trade my way to the top of the tech race. And was able to build Iron Works. I've had several cities culture flip to me. So now I hold most of the central part of the home contenent with Russia above and the Zulu below.

Considering that I don't usually play at Monarch, I feel I'm doing fairly well. I will read posts after I submit.

First Civ3 GOTM here.

I was an avid Cic 1+2 player but Civ 3 never got me hooked since I usually get very bored around the industrial age. Hence this was only the third civ3 game i ever completed. This one was fun though, multiple close rivals made it interesting for me.

I did not bother trying to conquer more than the starting continent and the roman/chinese island since that would mean huge armies and alot of planning. I got the full map knowledge from an english ship just when I was finishing the chinese and saw English and Iroquois cities everywhere on small islands.
I then decided to get peaceful, disbanded most of my offensive troops and started pumping techs for a spaceship. However i noticed that my culture was huge, so i just bought all the culture i could and won in around 184X AD.

The early game was the most fun though. I met the ruskies almost immediately, and saw Moscows incredibly nice site. I then pumped a few veteran archers and took Moscow with only 2 cities built. I then got to work on the Persians, who had built very close to Tenochitlan. As i took a few cities i got iron and was able to deny both Persia and Egypt any. Even Zululand never got iron. I proceeded to crush Persia and Egypt with swordsmen while expanding like mad. Zululand took a while to take down due to the impies taking out horsemen everywhere and a barbarian uprising causing havoc. I got knights soon though and Zululand fell in a few turns. I was gonna settle down on the island, but China declared war when i asked their triremes to kindly leave. I then invaded and Rome allied China, so i had to take them both out with some hardship.

So overall a very pleasing game, i might try the next one too.
Amazing growth this site has seen, only 2-3000 registred users last time i went here to play some Civ2 GOTM.

I toned back my milk run and played a green milk. I researched pretty much the entire tech tree except sanitation. So, no cities greater than 12 and no factories. Unfortunately, I did build the "Iron Works" before making this decision so I guess it couldn't be classed as entirely environment friendly but I did not lose fertile land to global warming. I didn't press the milking too much to allow some spare room for anybody who wants to go for the gold.

This is the first game that I used ROP's to really push the AI into the corner before finishing them off. I had been able to land a small force with a settler on the second continent to establish a foothold. By signing a ROP with one of the AI allowed me to spend the next 20 turns to ferry troops and a few more settlers that I used to culture wedge some more breathing room. After the first 20 turns of ROP had expired I made ROP's with all the other nations. I picked off the weaker AI first by moving my troops into position and then declaring war. I new that I would be taking a rep hit but it was surprising how long it took for any of those effects to take hold with the AI. By the time I took on the Iroquois they were annoyed but they did not counter attack prior to my hitting them full force. After that it was a small task to pick off any other cities on the islands.

Histographic win, not that some other options were not available.

Cheers

[edit: some spelling]

This is the second Gotm that I play. The first (gotm 12) I won through a diplomatic victory. Now I want to win by conquest or domination.
I attacked the Russians early, that is they declared war on me first (refused to give tech) but I wanted to fight them anyway. It took me quite some time to finish them as they had iron and I didn´t. They also had more cities. They biggest problem though was that they had built some of their cities on iron resources (on hills). However, with a little help from the Persians I managed to conquer them.
After the Russians were gone I decided to build more swordsmen and attack Persia too. This was not much of a problem as I had more swordsmen than they had immortals.
At that time my empire was bigger than any other on the continent. So, after a short period of peace I went to war again, this time with the Egyptians (because it would have taken ages to get down to Zululand with all those Swordsmen). Unfortunately it turned out that the Zulus declared war on me as well. That was no good and I lost a city to the Zulus but made peace with them afterwards.
The war against the Egyptians lasted a long time. I lost a lot of units fighting weaker Egyptian units. Then, after the Egyptians were defeated I attack the Zulus. The Zulus were not so well developed but it took me some time to get to all their cities with my main attack force (which changed from swordsmen to knights in the beginning of the war against the Zulus).
I think it was around 1000AD or later that I ruled the whole continent. At that time the smaller continent to the northeast was controlled 50/50 by the Romans and Chinese.
I attacked the Romans first (now with Cavalary) and then finished off the Chinese. After the war ended I swithed to Democracy and build up the cities I conquered. I decided to build the forbidden palace on the small continent (took ages though to finish it).
I also made contact with the Iroquois at this time. They were slightly behind me in terms of power and score but had (and still have) a better culture. (Only the Iroquois, Indians and Greeks were left. The Iroquois being the strongest civ, the greeks very underdeveloped and the Indians in between with only a few cities.)
The next few decades I was busy building my cities, developing the terrrain etc. (you can clearly see it in the score graph - just a straight line).
I stopped playing for a week then because it got a little boring.
Well, after a week I continued playing and went to war (switched to Communism first) with the Indians to get some land of the other main continent (nearly completely controlled my the Iroquois).
I also attacked the underdeveloped Greeks to save their land from the claws of the Iroquois culture. (The Greeks and Iroquois were at war at some point but nothing really happened)
So now it is only me and the Iroquois (around 1900AD). I´m ahead in the tech race (under Communism) and have much more units. Just a few turns ago I declared war on them (unfortunately they just got tanks, right now they have four of them)
I spend a lot of time loading up transports with tanks and infantry to carry them over to the Iroquois continent (that was before I attacked). I also discovered flight a few turns before and use the bombers now to destroy their oil and rubber resources. Some of my troops have just landed at all the smaller islands that are controlled by the Iroquois and are doing well so far. I will attack the core area of the Iroquois country soon. Then after the core area is destroyed I will head to the east of the continent and finish them off. (I hope they don´t get a cultural victory first.)

Thank you!:) It's very kind of you to spare some room for us.;) Sadly, I already submitted my game last week; otherwise, I would gladly accept your offer.

PS: I didn't milk my game much either. I mostly pressed the spacebar to skip to 2049 AD.

Picking up from where I left in my previous post..

Entered the Industrial age and still the Zulus weren't eliminated, mainly due to the fact that on numerous occasions I felt I had enough armies to finish them for good, and started building some of the more expensive buildings in my main cities (banks, universities), when suddenly I found my armies on the retreat again when the Zulus managed to produce yet another miracle stack of archers/impies from their last three size 1 cities. I certainly wasn't the only one unhappy with this as war weariness was on the rise again in my cities, but I refused to make peace with Shaka, as I constantly felt the war was close to an end.

After this tiresome war finally ended the celebrations were only tempered by the fact that for a second time in a row now in the GotM competition, I had miraculously managed to position my cities in such a way that building Iron Works was no possibility, even though there appeared to be plenty of chances on the continent :(. The pain of this loss was, however, alleviated a little by the fact that coal was available, meaning a much needed boost of production (and for some cities even food production) with the appearance of railroads.

Tech research had been good throughout the entire industrial age but as the techs became more and more expensive I regularly thought back to that unfortunate moment in the early stages of the game, when that wandering Persian warrior forced me to enter the GA early, when still in despotism, thus robbing me of a way to greatly increase economic production later in the game. Can't have it all, I guess. :)

Finished my game with (as I already stated I would) a spaceship victory on a decent date, but unfortunately not as early as last month's. In the finishing stages of the game I finally removed the last of my BC rivals (Russia and Persia had been sitting next to each other in the eastern jungles for a very long time) from the game to finally claim the continent as mine alone. :king:

I went "the milky way" in two aspects this month, as not only did I went for space race, but I also kept an eye on my score througout the game, trying to collect points wherever possible without hampering research too much, so I finished with a relatively high score (for me that is, of course ;) ).

First off, I was surprised how quickly I started off, given that I don't usually play on this level.

I was a warhawk in this game for quite some time. I immediately took out the Persians to gain cities, and then set to work on the Russians. As soon as they were gone, I allied with the zulu to take out the egyptians, and then after our alliance was gone, I banised the Zulu to a distant island.

At this point, I was considering going peaceful, but China foolishly declared war on me. I took them out, and then Rome shortly afterwards. I then got around to finishing off the Zulu outpost.

At this point, it was just me, the Iriquois, and the tiny Greeks. I was keeping the Greeks around to get a UN vote and end the game quickly. Two turns before the UN was built, I started giving all sorts of luxuries to the Greeks, and they became polite, and I thought I had it locked up. Then, for some strange reason, on the next turn, Greece sent ancient-level units and attacked my tanks. I had no choice but to take them out.

So, I became peaceful, switched to Democracy around 1920, and started the Space Race. It was absolutely no contest now.

All in all -- fun game, even though I spent 95% of it at war.

I got civ3 about two months ago and have worked up to winning on monarch before doing this first GOTM. I usually play Iroqouis and stomp civs with the mounted warrior, so I was pretty unsure playing the Aztecs.

Russia started out playing the bully and demanding tribute. I was concentrating on getting to the south for the Iron and horse resources, which although not the best strategy (killing russia first would have been nice). Early game I thought I was DOOMED, with Russia beating up on me with swordsmen, but cath kept sending settlers and spears through my lands which I was all too happy to stomp and collect the free workers. This game has taken so much longer than normal, I don't really recall all the early details.

However, I kept Russia contained (with help from a Persia/Egypt Russia war) and took a Persian city along the way. I was pretty weak at this point and just playing D and cherry-picking. Then, Russia and Persia got smoked with chivalry, as did Egypt. Taking Thebes was really messy (musket on a hill), and I had to raze it due to insufficient armies (also razed moscow). England died off early and India Iroquois shared the other big continent.

I'm not a fan of warring, its kind of cumbersome later in the game. So, I just took two Chinese cities (after they smoked the romans) for luxuries and Delhi for Ivory and Leo's. I'd much rather take one key city, set up a good D and let the AI move all their units to their death instead of me having to tromp around, find em, and kill em. Then I partook in a nice sponge-bath in Hiawatha's palace around 1950 just in case he had any spacey aspirations.

I let Shaka live in his jungle/desert **ithole for a while until he attacked my tank with some cavs. Then I razed Zim just to make him pay. I got content with FP in Moscow, and good core.

This game has been very good, except now its taking about 60 sec a turn for my comp to crunch the numbers (very boring). I guess that's my punishment for milking.

Looking forward to the next GOTM, hoping its not deity.:(

GOTM: GOTM13
Score: 2252
Date: 1982AD
Ending: Space - defeat

DAM  i used my Spy and suddenly found that rome was on the last part of there space ship, so, i grouped ALL troops up to invade, with the help of the other 2 civs i thought it would be the end..... but nooooooo i was too late

won by points
lost by victory space :(

Overall a VERY good game, first "good" game on Monarch :king:

This is my second GOTM.

The game went well for me. I didn't have much time to think about what strategy to use for the game. After building 3-4 cities the Russians demanded tribute. Of course I said no. So they declared war on me. It was only a short amount of time before one of my JW's won a battle to trigger my golden age. Then my capitol was putting out 1/turn. By the time my golden age ended I was well into conquering the Russian lands. Moscow was in a great place. After the Russians were gone I regrouped, built up the russian cities and more troops, and moved my forces to attack the Egyptians, then the Zulu, and finally the Persians. All of them were destroyed by me by the end of the middle ages except for the Persians. After finishing off the persians, I switched to Democracy, built my infrastructure, and researched. I left China and Rome to their small island. When the other continent was found, I think all of the original civs were still around. The Iroquois and the English had built a lot of the ancient wonders and were ahead in tech. The Indians and Greeks were not far behind, and Japan was being destroyed by the rest of them. This was the beginning of the industrial age. I was content with my large island home, and the game was on auto-pilot from then on. Soon I was ahead in tech and was the most powerful nation in the game. I built all (or most) of the industrial and modern wonders, and launched the space ship in 1922.

Well, back to PTW.

There is this funny story in my GOTM13. Toward the end, I left Japan with a city of size 1 in the middle of the desert island. He got only 2 regular spearmans defending his empire. In the meantime, I got more than a dozen modern amours camping not too far outside his border. Anyway, he demanded me to give him Navigation out of good will, I agree. No problem, I even gave him some extra cash out of my good heart to go along with that too. In fact, I called him up every few turns and gave him some cash. Basically, I really want him to vote for me in the UN election.

Anyway, I reloaded the game last night to see what could happen if I say no to his demands (I already submitted my game over a week ago; this reload was just for fun and educational purpose). About 20 turns after I gave him Navigation, he demanded me to give him Theory of Gravity; this time, I said "no". He immediately declared war and sent his two spearmans to take out my modern armours (of course, they died miserably; my modern armours didn't even fire a single shot; after they ran out of spears to throw, they just hit their heads against the armours of my tank:lol: ). Since I have spy, I knew exactly that he got only two units (spearman) in his entire empire. How dare he threaten me then declare war on me?:crazyeye: This must be the most crazy AI I have ever meet.
