GOTM 32 Spoiler

BTW which version are you playing?

(I play MGE, no helper programs, no black clicking, no city bribing)

My dear Monsieur,

I have Mac version 1, which I think is equivalent to 2.42. No helper programs work on a Mac, so that temptation is easily avoided. I like to follow the restrictions peculiar to whatever forum the game is on, so for CFC I have no problem with black clicking or city bribing. Also for CFC, I enjoy trying to work the score, which I normally never consider.

Restrictions, of course, are inherently interesting in SP. OCC was going strong on 'Poly when I first got excited about Civ II, and recently I have enjoyed Solo's no huts challenges there. Unfortunately I often don't have time to do a spaceship landing, so the next few months for me will have to be conquest.

If you like we could try a private challenge on GOTM 33 to conquer fastest with no city bribing or black clicking - the no city bribing restriction would be new for me.

My first gotm and the second civ2 game after a break of some three years. The rustiness shows although I was able to make it AC 1700AD.

Played the game basically as OCC with helper/feeder cities. The only other biggish city was neighbouring Leipzig with a final size of 11 cf SSC Berlin sized 31. The other 6 cities (and later 3 more from advanced tribe hut outcomes) were less than size 9.

The major impact on the game was exploiting the rehoming of caravans/freights to Berlin. This swelled the treasury to five figures which made the building of the fastest spaceship (34-8-8-1-1-1 = 5 years flight time, done due to forced indirect tech progression to Fusion Power) and the later wonders a breeze.

I did not optimise the arrival of caravans from the science beakers point of view. My playing of SMAC lulled me into neglecting to make sure that the beaker bar was just sufficient for the next turn unlike SMAC which allows the excess beakers to be carried forward.

Some poor decisions:
.accepting 200 g from Zulus to declare war on the Sioux (the key civ for most of the game). The Zulus never gave me one gold after that although the 200g was very useful at the time!

.Opting for Adam Smith instead of Magellan (when I was not that rich and the Romans were nearing the completion of Magellan)

.Not optimising the research options and timing of tech gifting to effect the most direct path for AC - need to digest solo's guide more thoroughly (Apolyton Civ2 strategy forum sticky thread)

.Cutting off intercontinental foreign freight trade too soon from over-optimistic reckoning of the tech progression to the final Superconductor and Fusion Power advances

.not exploiting the hut/hidden resouces pattern

It didn't take me as long as I had expected to finish my game (although I stayed up till almost 3 A.M. last night to get my SS finished).
The main reason it didn't take so long to finish is because I didn't conquer the AI civs as I had planned. From about 1700 AD on, I saw my GOTM score going down, much earlier than I had expected. I put my empire into celebration mode to see if that would make my score go up again, but it remained at about the same level, and when the celebrating was done, it went down again.
At around 1780 AD I decided it wasn't worth it to go conquering the AI (although I had Robotics at that time), and that I would be better of concentrating on the Spaceship.
No big battles with the AI took place, the only place where I had to defend myself now and then was on the northern Sioux island, where I still had two cities. I have been able to hold them off till the end there. All the AI Civs sneak attacked me every few years, but mostly with little succes, they didn't take a single city. No real trouble with Barbs either.
When I had all the advances I needed for the Spaceship, I sold all my Libraries and Universities, and did a second round of celebrating. After that I figured I should hurry with sending the Spaceship out, so I completed the biggest possible Spaceship in about 7 years. I sent it out in 1850 AD, with a flight time of 11 years.
After that I did a final round of celebrating and in the last few years I finally had time and money to concentrate on the AI, and I managed to bribe about 10 AI cities in the last 3 years (a few with Wonders).
Due to my last round of celebrating I got more and more problems with population pollution, so unfortunately I ended the game with two skulls.
Overall it was a satisfactory game, but I think I have made some unnecessary mistakes, especially in the last 100 years.

- my first round of celebrating was too premature
- concentrated too much on marketplaces/banks instead of freights
- should have started bribing the AI cities earlier, conquering the world was easier than I thought.

Agreed

I'm pleased to have finished my first game of the month. I'm more into the space race as opposed to conquest. I'm not up with the best of you, but did manage to land my spaceship (with 40,000 colonists) in 1937. Looking forward to more games in the future.

:) Welcome to CFC Erasmus! Landing in 1937 on AC is not bad at all. I suppose the one thing in common among the GOTM players is to have fun;) There are players here who are everything from "beginners" to experts. I was all happy with managing to land at all in AC in 2020:D

yes, sideshowbob, you are absolutely right. its great fun to take part in a gotm, and its much more motivation when you know your game will be compared with other ones. btw, thanks to DoM for making all the work, which makes this possible.
i'm 17th in gotm31 (my first gotm) and i'm really happy about.
i think i did even worse in gotm32, although i could finish it and land my spaceship. but surely too late for any prize.
now i'm looking forward to gotm33 to make it better.

Yes it's tru it's more motivating when you play the same game as many other players. I placed 21st in gotm 31, i.e. last:D And gotm32 was even harder since I never have played Emperor to the end. But I was quite proud to have landed my spaceship in 2020. And I played my first OCC after gotm32. It wasn't easy but I learnt a lot about getting a faster landing. Sure I can't compare with the pros now, but I'm confident that my tactics will improve over time. And if not, it's still great fun to play Civ:)

:( I think I'll have some problems to finish this months game. At least to do it the way I wanted to. I'm running really short on time, :(
When is the last date to submit your game?

I'll get finished, though most likely at the last minute. I'm no where near as careful as you two. :o

I finished..
Though I rushed through an OCC game. Probably could have put more of an effort into it, but I've been really busy lately. I suppose an attempt is better than a non-attempt. Maybe I'll do better next month.

I decided to take all my money and spend it on 300 shield wonders, saving only enough gold to subvert the last purple city. I also built new cities with my remaining enginers and then I just raised lux to 100% and finished the game. Could have had a much better score if I had had the time. This should still give me a few houndred GOTM-points though :)
