It didn't take me as long as I had expected to finish my game (although I stayed up till almost 3 A.M. last night to get my SS finished).
The main reason it didn't take so long to finish is because I didn't conquer the AI civs as I had planned. From about 1700 AD on, I saw my GOTM score going down, much earlier than I had expected. I put my empire into celebration mode to see if that would make my score go up again, but it remained at about the same level, and when the celebrating was done, it went down again.
At around 1780 AD I decided it wasn't worth it to go conquering the AI (although I had Robotics at that time), and that I would be better of concentrating on the Spaceship.
No big battles with the AI took place, the only place where I had to defend myself now and then was on the northern Sioux island, where I still had two cities. I have been able to hold them off till the end there. All the AI Civs sneak attacked me every few years, but mostly with little succes, they didn't take a single city. No real trouble with Barbs either.
When I had all the advances I needed for the Spaceship, I sold all my Libraries and Universities, and did a second round of celebrating. After that I figured I should hurry with sending the Spaceship out, so I completed the biggest possible Spaceship in about 7 years. I sent it out in 1850 AD, with a flight time of 11 years.
After that I did a final round of celebrating and in the last few years I finally had time and money to concentrate on the AI, and I managed to bribe about 10 AI cities in the last 3 years (a few with Wonders).
Due to my last round of celebrating I got more and more problems with population pollution, so unfortunately I ended the game with two skulls.
Overall it was a satisfactory game, but I think I have made some unnecessary mistakes, especially in the last 100 years.
- my first round of celebrating was too premature
- concentrated too much on marketplaces/banks instead of freights
- should have started bribing the AI cities earlier, conquering the world was easier than I thought.
