GOTM 40 Spoiler

I had not thought about it that way. I am not positive but I think the distance calculation for bonus payments is dateline-adjusted, but the max distance for ongoing trade route RD/RR multiplier does not correctly adjust for the dateline. This is rare because most datelines are ocean tiles. There is also an issue in ignoring "flat" maps for the same multipliers.

I'll take a look into the bonus calculation formula to check on the dateline question.

I have been away for over a year but could not contain the urge and finally gave in over the long weekend. I downloaded GOTM40 and had no choice but to go for OCC.
I have played to 1790s and I am currently building my spaceship. I will post a log later.

A+ombomb: A number of games I have played with "large land mass + continental land form" have had either one very large continent or three-four pretty big ones. The map generator numbers the continents starting with 1, which is the same as Ocean, so if there is a single large one it will probably get #1 and be "invisible" to black-clicking. Not really a "trick", just something that happens although you can force it to happen by removing any small islands in the upper left corner of the map (the numbers seem to be assigned starting there and moving horizontally by row). The last time we played the World Map, Greenland "disappeared" because it got #1 rather than EurAfAsia.

Good job, Tim. I knew my OCC game got a slow start; I was hoping I made some of it back with my bribed ship chain. You beat me handily without it.

Ali, one thing we discovered was a way to free up commodities that are blocked but available. If I deliver Salt to the French early on, then the commodity changes to Oil, as long as I do not deliver the Oil to a city large enough to replace the trade route with the French I should be able to build another Oil freight right after I deliver the current one. It shows as blocked, though, even though there is no trade route using it. To unblock it, build a Food freight, switch your city to building any Wonder on the next turn, and "contribute" that Food to the Wonder. This will "unblock" any commodities that are not blocked by trade routes. Switch the Wonder production to a freight and rush enough shields so that city production finishes it that turn and you have a new commodity to deliver. Aside from building improvements I was able to do that about once every 3 to 4 turns in the late game, because I could deliver within a turn or two using the ship chain. Very powerful, but rare to get doing OCC.
 
For non ooc, you can use rehoming of caravans to free up commodities too - just have to cities which don't share the same supplies home to opposite, then when the route is made it will temporarily be blocked but free up once again after another route is made. I use this often to almost infinitely feed my colossus city with trade.

There are a few things you need to keep an eye on in order to get gifts from your allies:
(1) Make sure you ask civs that have a higher power rating than you. This is hard to do in non-OCC games because the human player usually rises to Supreme before too long. Once that happens, don't even bother. Typically the only civs I asked for gifts were France and Carthage because they were the Supreme and Mighty civs while I was merely Strong. You may have noticed things in my log such as when my power rating dropped, I looked for the 4 spear civ and hit them up for a gift on that turn. When I rose to mighty, I tech-bombed carthage to get back behind them in the power ratings for quite some time (This had the side benefit that if I stayed mighty, Carthage would have been my key civ)

(2) Make sure your allies are kept happy before you beg. Whenever one of my allies dropped to cordial, I made sure I gifted them something until they were back up to a happy state. (Note that this tactic only works in Classic. If you use MGE, the AI will drop to uncooperative the very next turn. To keep alliances in MGE you have to save up several tech gifts, give them all at once so the AI goes up to enthused, then ask for the gift and hope they give you all their money in one shot.) As long as they are kept happy, you usually don't need to cave in to their demands.

(3) Another thing that helps get money from them (instead of unwanted techs) is to make sure they have enough in their treasury. (Marco Polo or an embassy helps considerably in this regard). I generally only begged if the AI had 50g or more in their coffers. You can sometimes get 25g gifts if they are between 25-50g, but more often than not you'll get a tech if they have one. Since the AIs had things like montheism that I was trying to avoid, I didn't beg if they dropped below 50g. Once MPE expired I could not see their treasuries, so I just went off the trends I had seen before that (particularly, I would hit the French up a couple times, then not beg from them for a few turns to make sure their treasury came back up.) Early on, the AI might gift techs even when they have 50g, but I think once you have more total techs than them, they will prefer to give cash if they think they can afford it.
 
I also got a lot of gold out of my alliances - that is the second thing I go for when I get Marco Polo, after maps. I don't even bother to ask if they have less than 50g. In the 1000BC-500AD range when you are trying to get key wonders built, ally-gifted gold can fund a caravan every turn if you do it right, but you need to carefully weigh how large you grow your city. I like to get to 10 shields in city production then stop growth till the key wonders are built, usually somewhere around size 6-9 (depending on the production of the special terrains). If you grow too quickly you will pass too many other civs in PowerRating and not be able to beg gold from them.

I don't ask every turn - depending on the number of alliances I have (I shoot for at least 4) I "rotate" them every other or every third turn. Some civs may stop gifting for a while, even if they have a decent attitude and enough gold in their treasury. In that case I "lay them off" an extra round, then try again. I also supplement my begging with a higher-than-normal tax rate as a "filler", building up my own treasury for the turns that I get nothing. The goal is to keep up a steady rate of caravan building.

Another thing to avoid in this time frame is losing the Warrior to start the RushBuying. Don't research Feudalism or Gunpowder until the main wonders are built. I usually delay doing Newtons, but I want Colossus, Copernicus, and Shakespeare, and sometimes KingRich, Magellan and Leos.

Tim, whether a grassland tile is shielded or not follows a pattern. You can always tell apriori if changing a tile to grassland will yield a shielded one or not. To see the pattern go to the map editor and create a large amount of grasslands (and nothing but). The pattern should be obvious. The pattern is the same regardless of the seed (which determines the type and location of specials).
