How it will work for the next month?

My thoughts :

Vanilla game for 1st of June(for 1 month) then wait for 1st of July to begin with G&K :)

I don't see the point to set a game for 15th of June.

There are a number of issues that we will have with the release of G&K. Been thinking of starting a poll on the subject, but am not sure exactly what the release of G&K will mean for us.

First of all, we do not know what the installation of G&K will do to the vanilla install on our machines, much as BTS changed the vanilla Civ 4 when it was installed. The question for me is whether a game save created on a G&K installed PC can be played by those who do not have G&K? (As there has been some issues with dlc)

AlanH will need time to analyze the save format and tweak, hopefully not revamp, the submission system to allow the submission of G&K saves. There will be some infrastructure work required to make things compatible with G&K.

Our MAC friends will not have G&K available to them for some time, as I understand it. If they wish to play GOTM, we should have a way to include them.

My thinking at this time is that we could maintain the two games per month format and have one for vanilla and one for G&K, providing that game saves can be created on G&K installed PC for vanilla that can be played by vanilla players without G&K.

Would love to know how many folks do not plan to add G&K. Reading in the G&K subforum, there seem to be quite a few that say they will wait until the bugs are worked out and G&K goes on sale somewhere.

Releases of expansion packs always create issues that we can not even anticipate. I would ask for patience as we gear up to try to support G&K. For now, I expect that we will have a June 1st and June 15th vanilla game posted.

man I dont even know how regular mods or dlcs will effect vanilla. Do you have a separate install for only gotms. or are they ignored if not on the map given?

anyway, no I dont plan to get it, tho it looks pretty cool, I probably cant afford it til christmas.

Good point.

Whatever that will be coming, we would be set up for another 30 training games. :)

It must be impossible for the mods to make a real GOTM in any time soon.

Life was so much easier in the old days. :)

Don't give up Leif!

Even if I never submitted one game, I do like the challenges...And I think most of the ppl do that too.

i am generally not an early-adopter so I will be waiting for a bit on G&K, generally a minimum of a month to both work out kinks/bugs as well as seeing the general response as to its good/bad qualities. It's a large enough change to the game that I'm not sure if I want to unlearn my previous strategies just yet. (Finances also play a role. I'm making due with older games until I get back on my feet and can justify game expenses.)

Also, as though you good gamers actually need additional work or effort, 2 GOtMs (one for vanilla and G&K) would allow everyone to have their choices. But that is an undue/unfair request as you already provide a lot of entertainment for the rest of us. But it is an idea ....:-)

One possible benefit for the GotM crowd is the new DLC list in the game. It appears that you can just 'uncheck' the DLC individually, and they won't appear in the game. I haven't tested it, but 'hopefully' that also means that saved games won't have the DLC flags, meaning people won't have to move their DLC folders anymore.

If GaK is counted in that list (no clue) then it'll be safe for anyone to switch back and forth between vanilla and GaK (note: no matter what, vanilla is getting a patch, so things will change).

I hope you are right. That means I might get some dlc. :)

edit - Alan has been doing some testing with the beta for Civ5 that recently came out. Please do not use this beta version to play TSG games for the time being. The save format is significantly different and the submission system has not been fully tested for the new format. Your game will likely bounce.

I can't imagine ever playing another vanilla game after getting G&K. The strategies for vanilla are now so one-dimensional. I'm really interested in trying some challenge games with G&K to see how people use religion to enhance their strategies for the different VC's. If not the GotM, then maybe some sort of unofficial GotM (difficulty level TBD).

The trick in Europe was to buy the G&K upgrade for Steam via GameAgent, the Aspyr online store. That gave me a serial number that allowed me to download both the Mac and Windows versions on 19 June.

I guess GameAgent didn't know it was not supposed to sell serial numbers outside North America until 22nd.
