Goz -10 Slow Motion is our Potion

1475 BC (1) - I am not exactly sure what the min run on Bronze Working is going to accomplish. Up it to max that we can afford, so we can at least build a decent military unit with our variant. Afterwords, will pursue something at min that we at least have a chance to get at a monopoly eventually.

1450 BC (2) - Hittites learn Philo, CoL. Worker chopping forest outside Salamanca to get granary build finished just before growth instead of with it.

1375 BC (5) - Our curragh finds China, who is just as far ahead as everyone else.

1325 BC (7) - Oops, misremembered my chopping rules, and the 10s go to Grand River instead of Salamanca. Switch tiles to delay growth. Also, Bronze Working comes in, and start on Literature at min.

Nothing else really happened. Settler headed somewhere east. Next player can make the decision as to the exact whereabouts of the next city. Since the fifth worker completed after the fifth city, it sort of seemed to me that we weren't really doing a great job of sticking to the variant. As a result, we now have a surplus of military and workers, and are even losing money to unit costs until the next settler builds a city. That seemed more in line with the original intent. No screenshot, since everything looks virtually the same.

Pre-Turn
well the settler is on it's way already

early: disband a reg warrior to keep unit cost down

1200BC we have a trading opportunity
give China 9gpt +100g for philosophy
give philo to Byz for 75g, IW and CB
English are a bit hesitant, but for philo and 50g, we get mysticism
spot iron down south, will send our settler there

middle: English demand 20gold, we are in no position to tell them off, so cave

late: meet the Spanish in red, they are up 5 techs, meet Carthago as well
Byz extort all the gold we have
found Oil Springs to claim the iron, found Tonawanda in between
on turn 10 English start GL, so much about our monopoly tech

Byz and English know literature, while the other 4 know CoL and Polytheism
maybe we can get some deals, since finally England has connected to our empire and we can trade our luxes
In fact, i checked and the English are willing to give us literature for 2 luxes, leave it to the next player to trade as per
gozpel rule

Turns out I'm going to be occupied this weekend, and seeing as I had time to only get one game done, I opted for Goz9 since it has less players. That said, I'll need a skip here unless you fancy waiting until late Sunday for any progress.

Preflight check: Nada, but we need more workers. A lot more.
Trade: Buy Lit and Wheel from England for Wines, Dyes, 1gpt, and 19g. Might as well make use of the luxes before they’re demanded away.
Closest horse in in Northern English territory :(

Trade: Sell Lit to Hittites for CoL and 94g
Sell Lit to Spain for Poly and 41g
Sell Poly to Byz for Mas, HBR, and 43g

Everyone is up Math and MM

Sell Poly to England for Math and 43g. I see Construction is available.
Sell CoL to Byz for MM and 104g
Sell Lit to Chinese for 165g
Sell CoL to England for Iron and 55g
Buy Construction from Carthage for Lit and 456g.

Ok, we have 7gpt and 89g left over, but are at tech parity with everyone except England and Byz, who we are up Construction on.

Upgrade a warrior in the Capitol for 60g, leaving us with 29g.

Switch the temples in Grand River and Allegeny to Lib and Harbor.

IBT: Everyone building Glib

T1: 975BC crap, Hittites up Currency

IBT: Sala settler -> Sword

T2: 950BC move settler S

IBT: NF spear -> sword

T3: 925BC China now up Monarchy. England has extra horses connected.

IBT: Grand River Lib -> settler; Chinese building HG

T4: 900BC nada

IBT: Alleganey harbor -> lib

T5: 875BC Spear/settler pair heading SW of Tonswanda. However, there’s a Byz pair somewhere in the dark as well, probably going for the dyes.

We can sell furs to Chinese and Carthage, but I was waiting for tech costs to come down. We can also buy horses from England so we can start building MW’s, but I’ll let the team decide on that.

Great trading!

A few more cities can be squeezed in here and there, but I guess military should be a priority too and MW's won't have a very long lifespan. So we should build some now.

Well I have it, a bit sooner than I expected. There isn't quite as much discussion as I am used to in sgotm. Have all you guys playing civ4 or something?

Gozpel, I see you want MWs. This will mean giving england construction, but this looks a straightforward decision to me, and I will make the trade. Clearly there won't be a war with england (caused by us) anytime soon, so peace will have to continue. I reckon MWs could have quite a long life; they aren't much worse than knights, and are much cheaper.

I think we want Monarchy. Any comments? What is our science strategy?

I hope to play sometime late tommorrow.

I think Monarchy will be ok in this variant, to save us the upkeep costs. I'm not sure how to get it though, we can't research it in an effective way?

England is way too scary to fight at this stage, so what other options are there? Byz? In one sense I'm not afraid to kick off a GA soonish, IF that could help us get Monarchy.

And I really want a couple of towns to the SE area, every town counts in my book :)

that's why I put up a dot map

875 BC
Give England construction for horses and 27g
I swap capital and NF to MWs.

850 BC
Our curragh meets a Japanese galley. They must have had a tough start as they are down 5 techs have no cash and only 6 towns.

Capital builds MW, starts a settler.

825BC
NF MW, start a worker.

My first MW goes to investigate the hut in the SE peninsula and it disappears before he can pop it!

We have a settler in place to settle in the SW now but he only has one escort, so will have to wait because of the variant.

800BC
Grand River builds settler, and starts MW.

775BC
NF worker, start a MW

Mauch Chunk founded in west next to dyes.

I allow capital to grow to size 7 as I want to pump some MWs out. It is tough to keep founding towns with 2 defenders at present.

IBT
England moves a warrior onto our land in south next to Oil Springs. War now would be very bad.

750BC
Buy 15g for England for 1 gpt, hoping to keep them sweet.

IBT England drop off a warrior settler pair on our SE peninsula.

730BC
Japs can now trade incense so I buy it for philosophy. I can get lux back to 0 now (I had bumped it up to 10% because of Salamanca).

Allegheny MW, starts another.

IBT English found Richmond in the south
710BC
Standard MM only.

IBT England moves settler close to west of our capital.

690BC
MWs built in Salamanca, NF and Grand River.

IBT
Hittites demand dyes. I guess I could have told them to get lost, but I caved in. I couldn’t quite remember where they were, and if a war would ruin a trade route. In fact our route to Japan might well have been lost.

670BC
Nil to report

650BC
St Regis founded on gold hill to west of capital.

A little MM, but Obviously things can be changed. In particular you might like settlers instead of MWs.

We now have 7 mounted warriors. I think some with concerted build up next turnset, and we could think about war with England when the horse deal ends. We could upgrade some warriors if necessary to bolster our army. Please note that a war with England could cut off the Hittite extortion racket, which would damage our reputation.

I still haven’t met Sumeria or America.

I left science on zero.

It's looking good.

Good decision on the demand of our dyes, they will pay later :) But do we want a despo GA?

We need to build mounties and cats. We'll need to hit England within about 30-40 turns. Otherwise Lizzy will become too strong.

There are 4 english towns just north of us, if we could take them in a blitz-attack we can probably sue for peace pretty quickly.

Of course Monarchy would be great to have before that, but I'm not fussed. And 7 MW's won't do that job either so we need more of them.

Expansion period is over or just about, so what do we do when we take cities in war? Still using the old formula and have to keep 2 defenders in every new town? If so, we will need a LOT of units :)

The 2 unit thing is up to you to decide :)

If we want to keep our reputation, we should attack after 18 turns. Monarchy takes 20 now, probably we will get it before 18 turns from now. So that would fit properly but take a while and a lot of research investment. It would make a well timed GA.

lurker's comment: How cool is this lineup? Subscribed.

I don't see the need for cats. They really don't go well with mounted warriors. Attacking England shortly after the horse deal ends looks good to me. We could just about learn monarchy by then and get a Golden Age free from despotism. In particular, waiting until the Hittite tribute finishes (about 17 turns from now) seems best. We ought to have lots of MWs by then.
