Goz8 - Silence is Golden

Preflight check: Wake a couple of cats and move them to promised land so they can be upgraded in 3T.
I switch Lagash from a settler to a temple but I leave Ur alone. We do need more settlers but I don’t want to send 2 towns below size 7 as we’re already paying 39gpt in support.
Switch Odense to a court so the chop shields don’t get wasted on a galley.

IBT: Babylon contacts us for our trespassing, but does not offer anything good for our dyes and ivory so I pass.
Agade: market -> duct.

T1: 460AD moving. I’m going to chop and irrigate around Ur so we can work that gems mountain.

IBT: Ur settler -> temple

T2: 470AD suicide galley near the Otto’s fortifies. I’m going to try to send 2 galleys at once, hopefully, at least 1 makes it. The other galley gets to the far side of the Babylon island and can see brown borders.

IBT: eng -> invention; Sweet Salmon galley -> ‘duct; Umma market -> harbor; Alesund barracks -> harbor; Kua walls -> worker

T3: 480AD moving

T4: 490AD suicide the galley to the east of the Babylon island.

IBT: Lagash temple -> trebuchet; Bad-T market -> ‘duct; lose our suicide galley

T5: 500AD The brown civ was Russia. They know invention too and lower our time to 13T vs 17T.

T6: 510AD nada

IBT: Ur temple -> treb; Agade ‘duct -> court; Kissura library -> harbor

T7: 520AD 2 suicide galleys go for Korean coast.

IBT: Lagash treb -> treb

T8: 530AD  both galleys survive for once :) I brought a horseman along so I drop him off in Korean lands.

IBT: Korea demands we leave and we say we will, but we won’t ;)
They have iron, incense, spices, and horses. Only 3g.
Umma harbor -> temple

T9: 540AD Plant forests on the recent jungle chops near Kua and Akshak. Looks like the Otto’s have plenty of muskets so these trebs will come in handy.

IBT: Ur treb -> treb; Promised Land Lib -> court

T10: 550AD Erech gets a scientist.

The peace deal with the Ottomans is back to normal now so next player or so can take them on again. I am building up Treb’s so we can wittle down the muskets. No need to be scared of them, we need to start taking them out and make a push for the iron, otherwise, they’re bound to trade for horses and we’ll be SoL. so far, we have 3 trebs + 8 cat's, with our 2 big towns building them every 3T.

We have met everyone there is to met, so the exploring galleys and horseman are just gathering info.

gozpel
grahamiam -> just played
Sir Bugsy -> up
ThERat -> on deck
Kaiser Berger

Sir Bugs, go and get those Ottomans, I hope you start a war, so I can enjoy my part as well

For everyone's information I am having problems saving the game. Something is happening in 570 AD that is causing the save to corrupt. I should have it figured out shortly. Hopefully, something isn't corrupt.

BTW - The Ottomans have rifles so I haven't started a war.

@Sir Bugs
I tried and have no issue with the save. sometimes when I save it gives the message corrupted, try again and it should be fine.

The Ottomans have rifles so I haven't started a war.
that's why I think we must start a war. we do not have iron and until we get Cav's will take a while. rifles means nationalism, very far ahead indeed. we need to get at them faster.
let's say we attack a town and lose 10 horses, that's the production of our capital for 20 turns, not that bad IMHO, it's worth the try.
any comments?

Early - Remember Bugs, Don’t talk to anyone!

I still don’t understand the idea of having all these workers working single-handedly on a task. Change Lagash and Ur from a treb to a settler. We’ll need to raze and replace. I cut a turn off invention by making two tax collectors study science. Korea kicks us out of their lands. Russia asks us to leave. I take the opportunity to look at their stuff.

Game crashes and I have to go back to 560 AD to get an autosave that works. :hmm:

Middle – I decide I would like to know where the ottomans have their roads, so I send an AC into their lands and he spots a rifle. Well there goes that war plan. There is no way our horses and ACs could take a city defended by rifles. Osman kicks us out and sure enough, he’s wearing his IA duds.
Invention=>gunpowder

Late – Korea comes up with this demand:
Goz8_-_640_-_Demand.jpg

We may be silent, but we’ll resist any bullying! Stuff it! They back down.

After Action - We will need to research to education next and start universities. We are rapidly falling behind.

got it
I think we need to build some LB and go and attack, will have a look tonight and see what can be done, at least get 1 to 2 towns and back to peace

If we have enough trebs, rifles can be dealt with. A redlined rifle can be taken out fairly easily by MDI, but AC and horses might be pushing it. We could really use some cavalry.

I agree Cav's will help but do we have a choice, the worst would be now to hit them with a lot of horses and lose some, but we would gain territory and the chance to have resources

Pre-Turn
checking things we are paying 54 gpt for unit support, another reason to go for war and get more cities. if things go well we should get 4 towns I hope :)
bring troops into position
do some MM and we get gunpowder in 10 @-2gpt

1. 660AD
gunpowder now in 7 @ -8gpt
we attack 2 LB, lose 1 horse at border and set up attack on Sinop

IT Russians furious and throw us out (I don't think it is such a good idea to run in their land and agitate them)
counter: LB retreats our exposed horse, MI loses at our AC
see a galleon escort leave

2. 670AD
attack Sinop, no time to wait for our arty, they will help once we take the town
1st AC (1/5) defeats 4hp rifle, I hope that's the omen for my turns
after losing 2 AC and 1 horse we raze Sinop netting 145g + 3 slaves, we defeated 3 rifles and 1 LB.
it must be our lucky day, horse defeats 3hp musket to clear our settle spot
found Nagsu (all the town builds had strategic reasons, hoep you don't mind)

IT attack at Eulbar doesn't go as well, 2 AC's are retreated before they can attack next turn

3. 680AD
MM gets gunpowder down to 3turns
shift units, defeat a lone MI, retreat from Eulbar, jungle = no arty support :(

IT can see korea and Russia fight
Ottoman really furious now, attack mountain enkidu, but heroically he defeats 1LB + 2 MI, before a rifle takes out a horse. we need more enkidu (cheap and effective defense)

4. 690AD
kill more units, Eulbar sends cannonfodder LB's

IT what? Ottoman wants to talk?
but nth much to offer, I want more first

5. 700AD
attack Kafa, trebs and cats reduce 2 rifles to 1hp
lose 2 horses but raze Kafa and get 120g + 1 slave
I hope the loss of gems will hurt them badly
defend at Nagsu beating 4 units, but I realise horses are pretty useless. we need more LB's. next turn gunpowder, hope we are blessed with saltpeter

IT no fights but some units advance to our land
gunpowder comes in, how come we can't build muskets

6. 710AD
oh my, we got no saltpeter. see one in Ottoman's land far far away
go for monotheism in 5 turns, we need universities for research

IT 4 Ottoman units attack our new settler spot covered by Ac's but all 4 defeated

7. 720AD
found Susa
finally, finally after many elite victories, we got our first army in the west
this will form an AC army

IT lose an endiku on mountain against rifle
enkidu + LB are good combo I feel, on mountains they can defend very well

8. 730AD
resting

IT 2 rifles attack mountain. lose 1 enkidu
Otto lands with 1LB and 1 rifle in our core

9.740AD
deal with 2 units
found Tutub on a hill, as a forward base

IT nothing much, another galleon escort coming from northwest (later heads back again)

10 750AD
advance towards Iznik, if only we can take out such a huge town...
I decide to play 1 extra turn, please do not stangle me, but I must know whether we can take Iznik :mischief:

IT some counter

11 760AD
trebs and cats hit well. there are only 3 rifles there, army takes out 2 going down to 5hp. 3rd is taken out by AC and we raze town, we take 200+g and 7 slaves.
there are 2 settlers ready next turn. maybe next player likes to rush some more settlers
I feel with AC, army, enkidu and LB (they are powerful) we can take out Edrine and get the much needed iron (if we think we can get it, we should go for chivalry research)
@western front, I did not do much. just defend against some LBs popping up
I MM every turn, used specialists to adjust research and income
now theology in 6

army went back town to heal, stack are all the arty that hit iznik, get back stack next turn and then turn to Edrine
warfront.jpg

Preturn- We look good.

IT- zzz

T1 770

Attacking a rifle with an AC yields another leader! Not much else.

IT- Nearly crap myself as three Sipahi appear on the borders. I knew they would find horses somehow.

T2 780

Kill a Sipahi with our AC army. Kill another with a horse.

IT- Two more Sips appear.

T3 790

Fend off more sips.

IT-We lose more units to Sips.

T4 800

I decide to send one of our armies on a pillaging spree in Ottoman territory. It looks like they may be at war with the Vikings too.

IT- Sips are becoming overwhelmimg.

T5 810

Kill off as many sips as possible.

IT- more of same.

T6 820

more of the same.

IT- More sips.

T7 830

More sips killed.

IT- Sips take out more of our units.

T8 840

We're into a full defensive mode now. We'll need peace as soon as the Ottomans talk to us.

IT- zzz

T9 850

Kill off more sips. It's a war of attrition now until they want to talk.

Summary

We weren't able to make more progress, but we are holding what we have taken. Education is due in 7.

hmm, the iron city was so close and then they got siphati, where did they get those horses from? :(
did they get some viking city with horses? we should try and pillage all their iron and saltpeter
now we have to re-think our strategy. as soon as they ask for peace we got to agree, but what do we do from there? vikings?
I guess Ottoman enjoy their GA now, that's why they can churn out so many units, good let them waste it on siphati instead of building infra

Again we have really hot weather down under and my computer doesn't like that at all. I tried to upload the save 3-4 times yesterday, but the comp shut down before I succeeded.

Anyways, here it is. No progress to talk about, just defending and trying to keep our stupid people happy.

Pre-turn - Fiddle around with scientists and cut research on Education by 2 turns.

IT, sipahi kill LB and pirateer sink a galley.
Babs tell us to leave, can't do any useful trades, but I give them dyes for 2 gpt, 26g and TM.

860AD - Kill 2 sipahi.

870AD - Vikings starts US.

Lose EW IT.
Kill sipahi.

Move army back to try to take out a jungle-city near Promised land, the other army check out the mountains near Edrine.

880AD - Kill 3 sipahis.

890AD - Found Kutallu.

Drop off a horse on the Babs island.

900AD - We learn Education, I dunno know really what to research. Zero research, I have to try to buy a tech and Ottomans doesn't seem willing to talk. It can take ages because we denied them the first offer.

A LB and a horseman defends against 2 sips and a rifle! :wow: And kill them.

Troops in positon to attack Eulbar next turn.

910AD - Hammurabi kicks out our horse from the island and I buy Banking for gems, ivory, 25gpt ands 186g plus WM.

We attack Eulbar, trebs go 2/6 but I can't wait, so win or lose.
We kill 4 rifles and a sipahi! and lose only 2 LB's, say thanks to the army.

Then we bomb a rifle up north, elite AC lose 6 straight and dies, next AC kills the rifle.

Everything is pitiful, military, towns, improvements and economy. And techs of course. I try to give 10% luxtax, it would cost around 20gpt and we only have around 70gpt now. I keep all the taxmen and switch some towns to banks.

920AD - Babs and Russia starts US too.

Interesting, Ottoman frigate sinks a russian caravel.

Sip dies against Kutallu.

Kill 2 more sips.

930AD - Sipahi kills LB. They keep on coming.

I'm sick of this unhappiness, every second turn a town riots because of growth and too little mp's. I'm buggered, but try to keep up with it.

Manage to kill 2 sips, but lose a LB.

940AD - Argh! Trebs and pults go 4/12 when I need them the most.

Kill 3 sipahis and a rifle. And more is coming, I really hope they want to talk anytime soon.

950AD - Lose a horse IT.

Next player might want to send the army from Eulbar up north to help with the defense and maybe one of the armies can go pillaging. I didn't get a chance to move it, as it had to heal half of my turns.

I'm really getting sick of games where we lack resources. Another annoying thing is that the AI seem to babble all the time in other games, but here they are completely mute.

goz8_sumer_950AD.jpg

Ottomans doesn't seem willing to talk. It can take ages because we denied them the first offer
sorry about that, but when I beat them hard, there were no sipahis. I am quite certain they still enjoy their golden age, it started around 20 turns ago, once grahamiam plays I am sure the flow will trickle a bit. let's just be grateful they spent it to fight all others as well.

I really enjoy this game although we do not have resources. whether we succeed or not, I would be immediately up to try this variant again with the same team.
and btw. I am sure once our peace lover Sir Bugs is up, Ottomans will talk. :)

I wouldn't consider myself a peace lover. I just didn't think it was a good idea to start a war. I was wrong. You gents have played it very well. Now we just need to have Osman talk to us.

I wouldn't consider myself a peace lover
joking only
I didn't make the statement due to the recent war, but this one
I have it. Me? Start a war?
anyway I am sure they will come and ask for peace. I wish so much we could get that iron spot, but since we aren't allowed to initate peace, it cripples that strategy I would use. (go raze that town whatever it takes, then quickly sign for peace, but we are the silent ones here  )
