GR13 - AWE on LK's world map

vmxa, I had a huge game and it would crash in the IT regardless of what I did. I posted the save here for help and other could play without issues. So, I picked up the save after the IT and it would crash yet again at a certain city (while scrolling forward through cities)
The only cure was a complete reinstall of Civ3. Everything including vanilla. A this meant really cleaning the drive off all Civ3 files. Troublesome but it worked for me. Maybe you give it a try in case anyone can actually load the save and attack Hyderabad.

Man I have not reinstalled this stuff in years. I will give it try. Something must be corrupted, but I have no idea what. My real fear is that we will play even farther and get locked down.

I guess all I can do is remove it and see how it goes. Hope I can remember how to put on the happy faces mod.

I am pretty sure that is not the case. In late games C3C sometimes crashes upon F3 etc. However, I guess your Civ3 got corrupted, not the save game
 
Vmxa, I loaded your save and razed Hyderabad, and what happened was perfectly normal, by the standards of my last round. That is to say, the screen froze for about four minutes and Task Manager listed Civ III as "Not Responding", but after that the program came back to life and I was able to play on. So obviously it takes the program forever to make the necessary adjustments after a city changes hands or disappears at this point, and I won't speculate about your computer, but I don't think we're facing a corrupt save here.
 
You are correct, it did finish. I quess I just panic when it took much longer than I had ever seen and the task manager said not responding.

I will blame it on my being so feverish. I feel better today and will get on it tonight. Yahoo, I was not looking forward to reinstalling.

Well actually I did not do anything. I was unsure of the place to plop a settler, so I figure I would wait to see what happened.

IBT:

1745AD:
Steal Combustion from India for 6100 or so (safely). They have Facism and Sanitation. I test our research rate. At 70% we run a 63g deficit and need 12 turns for flight. I am not sure how many scientist we could muster up. We have 12 taxmen. A quick glance shows about 21 other specialist.

So say 33 x 3 = 99 beakers. Flight is more than 12k. We are close to 1100 and that would get us to about 1200, so 10 turns. If we do not start on flight, but rather go for Mass Prod at some comfortable pace, we can do it in about 9 or 10 turns with a surplus.

The cash from razing cities will be enough to steal flight as at least India will have it in 10 or less turns. If we have not raised enough for a steal, we can turn down research a bit in 6 or 6 turns. We will just be wasting our beakers getting to flight at about the same time the Ai does.

We can then beat them to tanks as we are something close to twice their beaker rates and they will be going down, while we go up. The only issue imo is will we will slow down their research enough to beat them to flight. I don't know and it probably does not matter. It just means we wait a turn or two longer to steal it. Getting that much a jump toward tanks.

So I research Mass at 60% with a +140gpt. We have close to 2300 gold now. Swap all tax to beakers, now +128gpt.

2nd, 13th, 19th and 21st kill rifles and raze Jaipur for 732g, a cannon and 4 slaves. It took 4 minutes for the city to finish it animation. (4-0).

25th and 20th raze Inus for 493gold killing 2 rifles (6-0) 2 slaves.

Start Wall St in Kahun, rather than an army, but again we could switch. I figured we could use leaders for armies, if we get some elite cavs.

each turn someone wants to talk. I spotted Indian destroyer. Not much bombardment as I really pasted a lot of frigates last turn, redlined about 12 of them.

1756AD:

Jenne is another place making cavs with no barracks. I switch to a lib, in the hopes we can get Suns in a few turns. Gwandu is the third one and I switched it to a rax.

2nd kills 2 Indian units at Dacca (6-0).
24th kill LB and raze Dacca for 587 gold, 1 cannon and 3 slaves. India seems to only have 1 city in our reach now and a settler combo looking for a home. It is near New Avaris (7-0).
Cav kills Chinese rifle (8-0).
13th kills Mongol rifle (9-0).
29th kills Mongol rifle and razes New Trabis (sp) (10-0) and 9 gold and 2 slaves.
2 cavs kill 2 riders (12-0).
Cavs kills rider/rifle and mdi and captures settler (15-0).

I left a lot of workers stacked near Baghdad to be used or not. You would have to cover them with infantry or sword armies or something. I have been sending units that I did not need to Bag as well, so you have a bunch of cavs and inf as well as bombardment units.

I did not move all the armies, mainly those sitting in Delhi that just healed.
It looks to me like we can expect someone to get flight in about 6 turns, give or take.

Mass has dropped to 6 turns now, so we can steal flight and have Mass and flight in about six turns and on to tanks.

Few promotions and one leader, but we have so few elite cavs right now. I never did move the tranpsort either.
 
The AI could research Mass Prod first instead of Flight. Not sure how likely that is though. I don't think we lose that much if this happens though so playing the odds seems fine. We don't really need flight until the invasion of the other continent.

[Edit: Actually they could also go for Rep Parts or Sci Meth so I don't think this works.]

Does everyone know/remember that airlift has a maximum distance? Those that haven't played huge maps and above might not. With rails it won't matter in terms of getting units across, but if you wonder why airlift doesn't work - well can be the reason why.

I would start making transports and destroyers (if we haven't yet) already. We can start with islands to relieve pressure on any cities still pressured. Starting up the assault on the other continent can probably start soon. I like setting it up and getting a beach-head town built before Asia is taken.

I took a look at the save and things looked good.

It occurred to me that we only have China's core to go through and we are finished excepting two bit tundra villages. I would definitely switch builds over to destroyers and transports. Armies and artillery need to be shipped IIRC, and I don't want to wait until we clear out every little town.

I would put all major coastal towns that are building units onto ships.

I want to reiterate what vmxa said and not raze Kazan. It has Sun Tzu. I mention this in bold because it could be missed in the report and someone might forget to check(not likely with this group but hey). Actually I would also make it a target - that seems in process in the save.
 
I was playing some more with the save and do not think the chances are good that the AI will research flight.

1) They have 4 techs to research: Rep Parts, Flight, Sci Meth, and Mass Production. Wouldn't RP be at least is as likely as flight? so I am guessing their chance of researching flight is at most 40% or so. (assuming 40 40 10 10 with RP Flight likely).

2) China and Mongols are going to go down quickly. Almost guarantee their cores will not last long. Depending on how agressive M60A3TTS is. With 37 armies that is 3-6 core cities falling every round easily.

Soon only the Iroquios will be researching and they do not have refining and are more likely to go after RP anyway.

We can still go for tanks first since we have Mass Prod already. I think I prefer flight over tanks by a little amount.

There is still a good chance we get lucky and flight will appear in the next 6 turns. If it hasn't by then I don't think it will ever appear, so we don't have to make a choice until then.

Unless I am mis-understanding something here?

lurker's comment: I think researching tanks is not a waste: wether you get lucky on flight or not, it's always nice to have a few hard armies ready in case infantries and metropolises show up by the time you move to the next continent.

Looking forward to see the sweeping off turns unfold :thumbsup:
 
I don't know why the AI has ignoe RP, but I am grateful as cavs cannot be used on infantry in the field, unless they are redlined. I even take losses on redlined units.

Cav armies will be pressed to kill inf in cities and we could take losses there as well. Tank remove those concerns. OTOH we are at the point that we are making enough units to take losses.

I did start a few DD's and a transport as well as a harbor to be used.

On the tech front, 4 civs could be research flight and given the track record that they have this game, flight will be picked. In the mean time we get to tanks and have a ton of cash.

By them if no one has it we research flight ourself. I am sure that will not be required. I wish we could eliminate the ones that know the techs we have so slow down the rest.
 
On my way in I realized that we should know for sure in 2 or at most 3 turns. I had put India at 5000-6000 beakers at the start of my turns. Making no more than 600 beakers, probably less.

If they are not researching flight, then will finish in 3 turns or less from the end of my turns. The only thing I am not sure about is the discounting for the lost cities they had during my turns.

I think it will not be much as many were newly minted and some growth elsewhere may offset the loss. Anyway check their tech and if they do not show up soon with a new tech they must be on flight.
 
Tanks are definitely not a waste - I agree with that. Tank armies are great and the AI will have infantry some day soon.

Order of tanks vs flight makes only a small difference we want both. It is more convenient if flight is ready when we start the invasion. Hopefully the steal will work before the AI crumple into dust as that is the definitely the best scenario. If not we make a choice on which tech we want first - I am guessing flight then tanks. though it might be worth trying Tanks first to give them longer to get flight.
 
For sure we will know if India is doing flight before we finish Mass Prod. Just keep look at their techs. If they show up with RP or Sci Meth they did not go for flight.

If they still have the same techs after 3 turns, rest asured they went for flight and we will be working on tanks as we go for the steal. We already had about 6k in the bank. If they do found another town with the rifle/settler we will gain another 600 or nearly so.

IIRC they had one other town past the Chinese town for us to get and they have about 22k.
