GR18-AWM Genocide Variant vs 30 Civs.

Well, Viki is not a game breaking town, so either way would be fine although wasting a settler on that position might be a little too much.

lurker's comment: Shouldn't you upgrade some spearmen to pikemen? You have no unit building capacity currently and can upgrade 3. (Sword->Mace is not as helpful unless you want free healing). Namwon Part II might like it.

I'm not sure about this, but if you would like to catch up in research (or go faster), you'd probably want a galley for the ocean (or inner sea) to the west to make more contacts. As long as you can hold your defensive position, that's fine, right? Aren't you biding your time until you get enough knights, anyway?

Nice work getting us well into our anarchy. :goodjob:

So the Sumerians are three techs at most from cavalry--not great news.

We're a bit light on armies on the Viking front, where we most need to make progress. So even though it's never pleasant to waste army-turns on travel, I think we should swing the mace army in Won Is Not Enough SW to Scandinavia after it heals this IT. It could head either to Bodo or to Reykjavik, as the next player sees fit.

I'd hate to compromise the premise of our game over a very minor city. The people of Viki tolerated alien rule and the town must be burned to the ground.

We have five of our ten settlers in towns on our hard-pressed northern front, and I can't imagine what they're going to do there. We won't be expanding in that direction for a long time, and we're much better off defending front-line towns which already have their roads, their walls, and in some cases their barracks. All our settlers should be sent south at this point, however long the trip may be.

Shouldn't you upgrade some spearmen to pikemen?

Money is always so tight in AW, and so important for deficit research, that resisting the temptation to upgrade units becomes automatic for experienced players. There may be individual exceptions, but on the whole the only good upgrade in AW is knight --> cavalry.

5 turns is great, thanks to the 250x250 or that would have been a large number.

Later you have some cash for a few upgrades, but mostly it is not done. A town under pressure may be a good time though. That is if you have the money and if you have a barracks and the research is not more important.

will raze Viki then...got it. I try and get rid of Scandinavia once and for all

Pre-Turn
MM quite a bit, get rid of some clowns where cities can't grow due to pop 6. Engineering now due in 38 due to scientists

In the south, we take out 3 units including 2 muskets at Susa
At Hamhung, take out 3 knights and 1 archer
In the north/west defeat 15 units, but now a sword army and the knigh army are redlined [83-0]

IT scary interturn, Vikings lose a knight at Wheats, then Sumer decides to change path and
attack with 4 knights at Bingo and defeat sword and knight, but loses 2 knights
the town stands though, finally we lose a sacrificial MDI [86-3]
well, we get quite a few new units and the support is even higher now

5.1530AD
reduce to 30% science and even that we can't sustain currently

Then a Ottoman knight attacks Won for the Books and loses
Vikings send 3 units towards us, good that they empty their capital [183-6]

10. 1555AD
defeat 2 spears in Bodo, unfortunately no more cash from them
I do hope the Viking capital is the last town they have

found Cornerstone just next Bodo's ruins

defeat 2 units in the east and move knight ans sword army next to Haarlem

send army to Urfa and take out a pike
in the northwest take out a mere 3 units

I leave one knight army unmoved for the next player to decide the tactics. Do we move out in the north or stay put.
We do have no settlers and workers there as they all are busy in the south
There are quite a few settlers soon to be planted (we have 10 settlers)

Unit support is now 140gpt and killing our research rate, but I think we just have adequate units now. Vikings gone will surely help us a lot
Engineering is due in 5 now at -16gpt and 42 in the kitty.

The Vikings are struggling and should have a mere capital left. I am sure they are gone within 3 turns or so. We can then settle the land

no_more_vikings.jpg

On the other hand, Ottomans have been pushed back and we have closed off the land access to the south. We should try and expand there as well
ottman_prgress.jpg

Great stuff. :goodjob: It's too bad the Vikings didn't have more fertile land for us to settle, but OTOH disposing of them without further delay is good too.

Ah, but you actually get grassland from the Vikings. (All the rest is plains of FP.)

Good job, your south looks quite clear. Now all you have is a constantly growing northern front, as you push out in all directions. Or would you just probe one direction and defend another?

Excellent progress on the Vikings. If we continue to expand, we will prevail.

It is at this stage of the game and later that the variant will have its biggest effect. No free foreign workers and we won't catch up by capturing the Great Library. We will likely be trailing in tech for much of the game.

After the Vikings, the southeast seems the best to expand to minimize our front lines. I am guessing that the coast to the north is an inland see so I think we will eventually have a front line east and west of it.

Also glad to hear of a second Dye. Dye town was at risk on my turns (did we have a chance to cut roads so it doesn't get suprise attacked?)

I've glad we're finally close to getting Engineering. Playing this far into the game with rivers impeding our movement has been a huge PITA.

Dyes Town was pretty safe during my turns. I could always ping all possible attackers and they retreated in the next IBT. Anyhow as long as there are armies in Westwall and Dyes Town foreign units try to bypass these towns to get through to our undefended cities behind those two cities.

I'm just past halfway through my turns and can confirm that. I've been letting the enemy go pretty far to get them on the flat and decimate them uninhibited by any other threatening troops. In that area, the tile occupation isn't even that disastrous.

Expansion in the south has been continuous, and I'm preparing to start pushing in the north and east again. I hope to finish in about 36 hours from now.

I think it's a mix of the brilliant snoopy graphics and some added stuff.
I would try snoopy's graphics first (you can find all those graphic changes here: graphic mods ) There are other modification like ruins etc. I can't really remember what I did exactly.

Start out with -16gpt at 30%, engineering in 5.
End up with a whopping gain of 2gpt after MM, but with more shields in some places, and more beakers I think.

Rename Namp'o to Rat'o, because there already is a Nampo in our core.
Won Of These Days should be a temp town IMO, switch to settler.

Won In A Million switched to cat to not waste as much of the chop, Sugar Top swithed to settler. Suwon Again and Taejon swithed from knight to aqueduct, Some Song gets more productive tiles because it has the FP. Won For The Road switched from walls to catapult.

I decide to finally do the wall-sale, to support our deficit research. I'm hoping that by the time those extra funds run out, I'll have improved our economic situation a bit. Sell 21 walls in all, some of them in fairly new towns near the Viking front. We should really all keep in mind to change walls builds in time if a town is no longer on the front. I'd rather have an extra cat or treb or worker.

vSword kills Viking archer near Cornerstone. [1-0]

That is one ugly mountain range there past our eastern front...

Looks like the northern front is well under control with the sword armies. So I move the 14th knight army out. It kills a healing Russian musket and then a swiss in Den Helder.

East: eSword kills musket and my first elite victory bags me a leader :). He rushes the aqueduct in Wonsan.

West: Army kills 2 pikes in Trondheim at little hp loss, *Sword kills landed archer.

North: Army and vKnight kill knight and MDI.

South: Army kills musket in Tver'. Army kills pike and spear in Urfa and razes it for 8g. Army kills Otto knight near Won Is Not Enough. [13-0]

South: MDI army kills swiss and spear in Lauwersoog and razes it. MDI army kills musket in Anshan. Found Tundra

East: At Haeju eHorse kills retreated knight. At Kumgang, eHorse dies on 2hp knight. At Taejon, attack a stack of 4 Sumerian knights: vMDI and eSword retreat 2, eKnight kills 1, vKnight kills another. The two retreated ones are dealt with by the MP vHorse out of Seoul and the sword army out of Hamhung. I can bring up the horse from Inch'on to take care of Seoul (nice, these mobile MPs).

North: At Pyongsong, army kills Dutch LB and Celt MDI. At Chinje take on some Carthagineans: *Sword and eKnight kill 2 MDIs. Army and eKnight kill 2 MDIs and a merc. *Sword kills a final merc. At Westwall, army kills Zulu knight. Take out 2 more swiss mercs in Den Helder (the second one really took a lot out of it though). At Tokwon, army and vMDI kill Spanish spear and archer. [49-2]

South: Army kills musket in Anshan and razes it. Found Fool In The Valley. Found Edgy.

East: At Haeju eHorse kills Dutch LB. At Taejon, vKnight kills Sumerian knight, but we lack a sufficient number of cats and troops to really damage their forces here. I'm pulling in more, but maybe we'll be defending again here. Upgrade *Sword in Haeju to compensate.

North: At Namwon *Sword kills Mayan MDI. At Tokwon, army takes out 2 Russian knights, MDI takes out another Spanish archer. [56-2]

I suddenly spot 3 fortified workers at Ship Song. I start them towards the Westwall region, we can expand there. I spend 64g in Taejon to make up for my premature selling of the walls and buy some shields towards the aqueduct.

We'll get engineering with 1 beaker overflow :D

IT
The expected Spanish landing doesn't happen, the 3 galleys they have in the area just keep going in circles. Maybe the units on them couldn't be supported? A Russian musket shows up, not sure if we've seen those before. The Sumerians also have muskets near our borders now.

2 Celt vKnights attack and retreat at Haeju and some other place I forgot to note. An Otto rLB attacks our army outside Salonika. Another lands next to our settler near Tundra. 2 Sumerian 3hp vKnights attack our vPikes in Taejon, 1 dies and 1 retreats. [58-2]

9) 1600AD
Invention has dropped an extra turn (9 left).

East: start with bombing one of those Sumerian knights, then vKnight kills him to recapture our cats. Our economy is in the red again :). Armies then kill pike and LB in Curovernum and raze it for 4g. Cut a road there with wounded army and take cover. MDI kills jav at Hamhung. Knight army kills pike in Eboracum and needs to heal again :(.

South: an Ottoman settler somehow got past me and founded Karabuk. One MDI army attack later and one pike less and the new town is razed, no gold. Other MDI army kills 2 more pikes in Sinop. There's at least a healing LB in there too.

North: army kills a spear in Zaragoza but goes way down in hp. I'm planning to retreat it into Tokwon, but it turns out that spear was the last one, so no deal. Zaragoza razed for a meager 2g. I start an audacious operation near Westwall: MDI kills Zulu knight NE-NE of Tokwon, pull 5 cats from Westwall to redline another Zulu knight NW-W of Westwall, knight army kills that one and the Spanish archer N-NE of Tokwon, then moves into settling position. At Westwall, eKnight takes on Hittite pike. I was switching between writing these notes and the hand-off notes below, and wondered if anyone would actually dare to found that new town, but I think this will tip the balance:

gr18_full_circle.jpg

At Namwon, *Sword kills pike, vSword kills jav, vMDI kills MDI, eKnight kills MDI, vKnight kills pike. [172-6]

Hand-off notes:
  • The workers by Cheju are on automove to the mountain where the single worker is already building a mine, to help out.
  • I've been moving the horse on the southwest tip of the continent back and forth to make sure there are no landings.
  • Nampo can be kept on starvation for this IT and then another, then pick up the wheat for growth to 2 short of a full box just as the aqueduct will finish, then grow without waste the next turn (but you'll need 2 MPs to swap the single wheat worker for 2 workers on shield producing tiles).
  • The army by Lagash has been exploring and cutting some roads. I think we're near the other side of the mountain range here. I think attacking with it won't be effective on hill town. Try to get across that range and move towards the Celts, who only have pikes for now.
  • There is a Celt galley with unknown contents 3E of Fool By The Sea.
  • I've just switched Taegon to a granary, because it is clear now that it can be a 2-turn worker factory at size 5, rather than a 3-turner at size 3-4.
  • Let Dyes Town build up some food reserve before hiring additional scientists, because its tiles are often occupied.
  • The "exposed" workers and cats near Westwall, covered by a single pike to deter the Spanish spear, are not exposed at all: Hittites have no fast movers, and will block everyone except the Carthaginians, but they don't have fast movers either. Found a new town under the knight army, then move the roading crew north of Tokwon.
  • I've just sent the army by Some Song north to help with defense, so that the 2 knight armies can be used to their fullest extent on offense.
  • There are 4 healthy Celt knights directly south of Enschede, and 1 more SE of there. The three exposed cats will probably attract them, but will be safe. The Sumerians will capture those cats and hopefully take them towards Kutallu.
  • One scientist in Wonsan should be put back to work next turn to get the knight in 5 turns instead of the 6 that are shown now. I've given a grassland tile to Kumgang this turn. Fire this scientist and you'll have to find another to get invention in 9. I know this will not be an issue in the end (to still get the 9 turns), but there's no use for that tile in Wonsan this turn anyway.
  • Pusan can grow and use another water tile to gain another happy face from lux, along with 2 more beakers. On growth to size 11, that won't be the case, so better give the wheat away at size 10.
  • I've left a settler near the Ottomans with 1/3 movement. I'd leave it right there for now, then found on the hills 3N of the Fool By The Mountain next turn. I'd use the next settler (on its way) to found 3NE of Fool By The Mountain.
  • The 2 workers in Hyangsan are meant to complete a roading crew to settle the eastern desert.
  • The Tokwon-Westwall-Taegu triangle has some commerce, so I'd develop those towns when possible. Building a courthouse in Westwall right now to that end.
  • I've started mining some mountains in or near our core for towns that can't grow much more. When those workers are done, it may also be a good idea to irrigate 2 grasslands at Seoul or Ulsan to bring an extra gem mountain into play.
  • The galleys near Kaesong have been sailing around forever, were just pinged and have never dropped anything.
  • Sumeriwon should probably be abandoned soonish, to free up 2 hills (6 turn knights instead of 7 turns in Inch'on, Weeping Song gets 5spt instead of 3spt).
  • I would not be opposed to ICSing the tundra, but I wouldn't do it myself.
  • I've been building workers in the southwest. After the current round, we should probably switch to mass building artillery in anticipation of metallurgy, the occasional settler and lots of scientists.
  • P'yongyang's 14th shield is corrupted.

Knights: lost 1, built 2+1+0+0+3+0+1+1+2 = 10 (9 added)

Elite victories: 1+1+4+1+4+6+5+3+2 = 27
Leaders: 2

Towns razed: 1+2+2+1+1+1+0+3 = 11
Towns lost: 2 (1 settler abandoned, 1 stupidly lost to attacks)
Towns founded: 0+1+3+2+3+1+2+0 = 12

If I had known my leader luck on the first elite victory would not be representative for the rest of my set, I would obviously not have rushed that aqueduct. Oh well... I upgraded a single *Sword, but maybe we should some more of those, to increase leader chances. We may be able to afford an upgrade now and then, and are a long way from being able to run 50% science anyway.

Sorry I don't have more pictures, but I didn't have time for that.

We need a lot more troops. Some are still on their way back from the Viking campaign, but still.

I'd keep exploring a bit with the 2 armies in the mountains. The knight army can raze Eboracum, then continue north to see if there's a way around that sea (probably), and if so go around it to help out against the Dutch. I think we are ready to start pushing north again, towards the good lands. We'll need a few more workers there, and push out settlers on a regular beat.

The south is very easy to handle now. The Ottos are probably gassed, and the Sumerians focus more on our eastern front for now. That could change at any moment though, but we have a few more armies on the way in the south to defend, so no problem.

In the east I'd settle the desert, and then hold short of the mountains. It'll be some time before we can take it to the Sumerians (they have muskets on hills).

It shouldn't be long before our science starts to pick up with new settlements in the southwest.
