GR18-AWM Genocide Variant vs 30 Civs.

230BC:
I see I did not have this turn in the log, whoops. Don't know if I missed anything or not.

IBT:
Dutch archer attacks the sword and dies and sword is elite now (1-0).
Hittite sword kills a spear at Nampo (1-1).
Hittite archer dies attacking spear at Nampo (2-1).
[13-2]

210BC:
I now see the sword that killed the spear was just a regular, thanks.
I cannot kill it as it would expose the unit to 5 archers as 3 more Hittite show up.
1st kills V-archer (1-0).
Get a little luck as two swords kill Otto sword and both are redlined (3-0).
[16-2]

IBT:
more units move around.

190BC:
eSword kill Dutch spear at Wosan (1-0).
Sword kills Spanish archer and goes elite (2-0).
Sword kills Hittite warrior (3-0).
[19-2]

IBT:
Otto sword dies attacking spear at Cheju (1-0).
Hittite archer dies attacking Nampo (2-0).
[21-2]

170BC:
First cat in action at Cheju and pings Otto sword.
Ulsan founded.
Inchon founded. We go from -3gpt to +7gpt.
So I up research to 50%.
Second cat pings a Dutch archer at Wosan.
eSword kills dutch archer (1-0).
[22-2]

IBT:
Dutch archer dies attacking eSword (1-0).
[23-2]

150BC:
Ok, I have the gems hooked up now. I drop lux back down and raise research to 70%.
Both cats ping units again, wow 4 for 4.
Sword kills Spanish settler/spear combo and we get two slaves. Oops I recall we are not allowed that, so I load the auto up and replay things and then disband the slaves.
(1-0)
[24-2]

I see Mayan settler combo and declare.
I am leaving several moves open for the next player.
We have units in Nampo that can attack, but they will be at risk. I let the last combo pass the town and killed them in our land, so we are not exposed.
Wosan has units in front of it and could take a sword form the next town.

7 elite wins and 3 vets became elites.

0) 150BC
I turn down lux and hire a scientist in Seoul; it will still produce a sword in 1. Switch P'yongyang to spear to act as MP. I want to be on the safe side to start here, to get an extra 1spt in Cheju at the expense of 1fpt. In Hyangsan, work an unimproved desert tile for 1 turn to get the cat immediately. After that, I feel it will be fine to switch Wonsan from cat to settler. Research to 90% at -5gpt to get the wheel in 4.

At Wonsan, eSword kills Dutch rArcher and vSword kills Dutch rArcher.
At Nampo eSword kills Spanish rSpear and eArcher kills Spanish rArcher. [4-0]

There are 3 Hittite swords due to arrive at Nampo on the IT, so I switch the spear build there to a cat, due in the IT. Then I notice we are still using the tile the Mayans are on. Luckily, it can take a BG tile from P'yongyang. The 11th shield is corrupted there, but not the 10th.

IT
Nothing specific, but lots of units approaching in the north.

Seoul: Swordsman > Swordsman
Pusan: Swordsman > Swordsman
Hyangsan: Catapult > Catapult

The Portuguese finish the GLight in Lisbon, the Arabs finish HG in Mecca.

1) 130BC
It is now clear to me that we lack sufficient numbers of troops to have MPs where we need them. So lux goes up again, and research down.

At Pusan, 3hp vSword kills Spanish rArcher and vSword kills Spanish rArcher and promotes. At Cheju, ping a Viking rWarrior that threatened Seoul tiles and kill it with a vSword. At Nampo, vSword dodges defensive bombard, but still dies on Hittite rSword. [7-1]

The Mayan settler pair advanced, but we can't kill it without exposing a unit. So I block and cover workers. Shuffle MPs and defenders. There are 2 unfortified eSpears in Nampo now, along with some other units; 4 Hittite units can attack on the IT.

IT
Hittites attack Nampo: fortified vSpear dies against rSword, two unfortified eSpears defend against 2 rArchers and 1 rSword. [10-2]

P'yongyang: Spearman > Swordsman
Nampo: Catapult > Swordsman

2) 110BC
At Nampo, eArcher dies on Hittite 2hp vSword and eSword kills rArcher. eSword kills the Mayan settler pair. Because of that unexpected archer loss, I can't dislodge the Dutch advance at Wonsan. The army is healed and I start moving it north. [12-3]

IT
The Dutch move past Wonsan (we get some ZoC hits). The Ottos turn to Cheju again (5 swords in the vicinity). 2 Viking archers on the doorstep of Inch'on now.

3) 90BC
At Wonsan: ping a Dutch rSpear, then eSword kills 2hp rSpear, vSword kills 2hp rSpear, vSword kills rArcher, vSword kills 3hp vArcher, vSword kills rArcher. eSword kills remaining vSpear. All clear at Wonsan. [18-3]

Move a spear into Inch'on. I decide to take a chance there, and not move the army back in. Our fortified spear has an 80% chance to defend against an archer. I'll be able to move in reinforcements soon.

IT
The Vikings move past Inch'on, the Ottos move past Cheju, one of them onto our road. :shake:

The Wheel comes in (MM payed off after all), continue with CB in 5 at 50% and +3gpt. We have horses right next to Seoul.

Seoul: Swordsman > Spearman
Wonsan: Settler > Settler

4) 70BC
Bombardment on the road-threatening Otto sword fails. I'm not going to attack it, let's just hope he continues west. Workers at Ulsan will be sent to build alternate road as soon as there are units to cover.

At Nampo eSword kills redlined Hittite rSword. Army kills Dutch rArcher and covers settler. Spot jungle beyond Holwerd. Start moving some swords south. [20-3]

Research up to 60% and hire a scientist in Pusan for CB in 4 at +2gpt.

IT
eSpear defends against Hittite rSword. The Ottos don't pillage, but continue toward empty Seoul. Lots of units on our road now though. [21-3]

P'yongyang: Swordsman > Worker

5) 50BC
Found Some Song, start walls.

Cats go 1/2 at Nampo. eSword kills Hittite vSword, eSword kills Hittite rSword clean, eSword barely kills Hittite 2hp rSword. vSword kills Dutch rArcher and promotes. Army kills Dutch vArcher and retreats back into Some Song.

At Ulsan, vSword kills Viking vArcher. At Wonsan, vSword kills Mayan rWarrior and settler.

Cat at Cheju misses again. [28-3]

IT
The remaining Viking archer at Ulsan pillages a road, cutting off our gems.

Seoul riots, scroll ahead to fix other towns.

P'yongyang: Worker > Swordsman
Pusan: Swordsman > Worker
Cheju: Catapult > Catapult

6) 30BC
At Ulsan, eArcher kills Viking vArcher, 3hp vSword kills another. Move roading crew in. At Seoul, ping Otto vSword twice and vSword kills it. Spear out of Hyangsan kills Hittite scout.

At Nampo, eSword kills Hittite 2hp vSword, 4hp eSword kills Hittite 2hp rSword, vSword kills Dutch rArcher clean, Army kills Hittite rArcher and continues onto Holwerd, killing a rSpear there. There is one more 2hp archer remaining in our lands. I decide to try my luck with a 2hp eSword, but fail.

At Pusan, vSword kills Spanish vSpear, vSword kills Spanish rArcher. [39-4]

Switch Ulsan to Catapult.

Lux up to 30%.

IT
In Pusan our vSword looses to a Spanish rArcher. Near Seoul our vSword defends agains an Otto rSword. Viking swords show up in the distance. [40-5]

Hyangsan: Catapult > Catapult

7) 10BC
Rebuild our gems road.

Cheju cats go 1/2. Two 3hp vSwords kill 2 Otto rSwords, vSword out of Cheju dies on 3hp vSword. Cover cats with spear out of P'yongyang.

At Pusan, 3hp vSword kills Spanish 2hp rArcher. At Nampo, 3/3 cats hit, eSword kills Spanish 2hp rArcher, 4hp eSword kills another, 3hp eSword kills Hittite redlined rArcher and avenges his brother that died last turn.

At Some Song, loose a healthy vSword on a Dutch vArcher. Army finishes the archer and his buddy. [48-7]

Switch Seoul to Swordsman.

Lux has to stay at 30% for now.

IT
The 2hp Otto sword decides to attack, and promotes one of our wounded swords to elite. The Vikings want to talk. After I decline, their 2 archers attack Inch'on. Our vSpear dies, but our eArcher survives. Very close call there. [50-8]

CB in, start on HBR in 11 (Myst was 9, but we urgently need some fast units).

Pusan: Worker > Swordsman

8) 10AD
At Inch'on, 3hp vSword kills the surviving Viking archer. Near Pusan, eSword kills Spanish spear+settler. At Some Song, army kills Dutch archer. At Cheju, vSword kills Otto redlined rSword. [54-8]

Lux down to 20%, research up to 70%, HBR in 8 turns at -1gpt.

IT
A healthy Otto vSword dies on our wounded vSword in the mountains near Cheju and promotes it. Two Viking swords attack our iron colony, the first dies, the second kills our spear. [56-9]

Seoul: Swordsman > Swordsman
P'yongyang: Swordsman > Swordsman
Wonsan: Settler > Settler
Nampo: Swordsman > Swordsman
Ulsan: Catapult > Catapult
Inch'on: Catapult > Catapult

Americans finish SoZ in Boston. I notice that F8 lists the number of wonders; something we should know about?

9) 30AD
At Wonsan, eSword kills Dutch rSpear clean. [57-9]

IT
The Viking 2hp sword attacks our colony again and kills our vWarrior (the chance of the win was 24,371%). [57-10]

10) 50AD
Found Taejon in a safe place, start barracks.

vArcher at iron colony kills the redlined Viking sword.

At Nampo, cats go 3/3 on a Hittite stack. eSword kills rSword. eSword kills 3hp vSword. 4hp eSword kills 2hp rSpear. vSword kills 2hp rSword and promotes.

MM Notes
Seoul: a mine will finish on the IT to pick up the additional shield required.
Everything else is straightforward I think.

The North:
gr18_50AD_north.jpg

Spanish and Dutch have been sending spears and archers, Hittites mostly swords. Center of our operations has been Nampo, with a lot of troop shifting between there and Pusan and Wonsan. Some Song has only been founded recently, and will probably take the heat instead of Wonsan now. Directly west of Wonsan is our roading crew, quickly building a mine now, but they should get back to their real job asap.

The South:
gr18_50AD_south.jpg

The Viking archers have been following the arrow. The swords go directly for out colony.

The East:
gr18_50AD_east.jpg

The Ottoman forces have been following the mountain ridge, bypassing Cheju via the hills south. As soon as we can spare some troops, we should probably block that south passage, to get them in the open north of Cheju.

This is a very, very hard game so far. We've been lucky at times to have troops just in the right place at the right time. If we meet a few more enemies in the near future, I don't think we'll be able to hold on.

The north should be somewhat secure now, with the army on the scene. It is the best direction to expand some more.

The south and east have been dicey. Some of our units have just arrived in the last couple of turns, so maybe it will get better now, but stronger enemy units are arriving now.

Let's try to keep expanding. Keep Wonsan on settlers, and peel off workers in towns that are at max food. We need more of everything, as usual.

Best of luck to the next player.

We should be getting another leader here soon. We need an army at each end or we will suffer a kill ration that we cannot afford.

That reminds me that I forgot to count elite wins. Quickly went over my report and I count 25 (I may have missed one or two). My leader luck is the same as always :)

I agree that the south is difficult to manage with the terrain. The north is just a matter of keeping enough troops around and not forgetting to build roads where needed.

It would not hurt, if we can get that 3rd unit in the army either. Lets it kill two units and not be at risk after a bad roll.

The leaders will come, someone will get a couple right away.

For example if my very first battle in the IBT, an Elite spear defended and got a leader? :woohoo: :woohoo:

Great to get another leader, Greebley.

This is a tough game and I don't think it has much to do with our added rules, but the mere fact that we got so many contacts so closeby so early. Luckily we have done very well so far given this setup.

I too think we should expand north. The land looks much nicer in that direction. Since we have horses, we should go for HBR soon. (edit: just spotted that we are heading that way now already)

Mumpulus, I can see that you really like settling very close to the enemy. This is the second time we have founded a city that overlaps with the Dutch

Preturn: Decide to change 1 sword to Catapult.

IBT: Spear gets leader on Defense.

70 AD: Clear out some units. Cats do poorly.

90 AD: Attack and Raze Holward. First 3 Workers captured and disbanded

110 AD: 6 Hittite sword are incoming - getting read for them. Dutch have started attacking Wonsan - Army moved to cover.

130 AD: Continue to hold off Enemy. Advancing hasn't been possible. Need to shift units as there are underdefended towns.

150 AD: Part two of vmxa prediction comes true as we get a second leader. Only 11 towns but we got a settler. I will settle ASAP and go for a third army (so we can get pentagon afterwards.

170 AD: There seem a lot of troops for Monarch on this level. We are still struggling...

190 AD: Build a City and the 3rd Army which will help. We can finally build horses, but I have no idea what tech to go for first. Our towns aren't big enough yet for markets - they need construction for that. Construction takes forever to get. Monarchy will drive our science to zero if we don't have the units we need and we will be fighting much tougher units with swords. Libraries won't help with our science so low. I am going to go for Mysticism, but I think we need to hear more on what science to go for. I am not convinced Monarchy is going to work when we don't have construction.

IBT: Horse kills Sword that I missed. Very bad news - we spot the Celts and the Zulu.

210 AD: Fending off troops.

230 AD: Fending off Annoying Troops.

250 AD: Armies healing for the most part.

Notes:
Armies should be fairly healthy next turn.
It continues to be rough. We may get 2 new civs coming at us as well.
3 Armies will hopefully help. Remember that if you keep the armies pretty healthy, you can use them to defend a city, unless there are tons of enemies.
We need MP to lower Lux to 20%. Thus I am building some Spears.

GR18_AD250.jpg

The Save

Rat that is exactly what I said earlier, we just drew a tough spot with so many civs so close and finding us right away. The rules have not even had a chance to affect us, much.

We probably would not have keep any of those towns, just the recent slaves is all we gave up.

As to techs, I would probably see which ones are the cheapest and go with them. Myst is probably known to most civs we know and the late ones are probably not.

So we know 8 civs now? Nice. :D

Mumpulus, I can see that you really like settling very close to the enemy.

In both cases I was sure those enemy town would be short-lived. :)

A few notes:
  • We should probably settle the iron some time soon, before the Vikings show up with a settler to destroy our colony. We may well be able to hold off such settlers, but I think it could become a tactical nightmare fast.
  • We are very unlucky with the lack of rivers, and the lack of a second lux. I think we shouldn't try to fix our MP situation because that will slow us down. Instead, dedicate all troops to killing the enemy, and push forward to find better lands and more luxes. I'd send out one army now to raze and explore. I'd also keep Wonsan on settlers and workers. If we don't have a settling spot, I'm thinking joining settlers to small towns will help a lot. That saves 20 turns on growth, which is huge at this stage of the game.
  • For tech, I would continue on the path I proposed. I don't think we'll be able to take towns off military production for some time, so no use going for construction. I do agree that we're not ready to switch governments right now, but there's no harm in researching the tech. We could slow the pace a bit and accumulate some gold. And I always like to get unit support up by founding more towns, not by growing the ones we have into cities (do that later on).

Settling priorities IMO:
GR18_AD250_settling.jpg

We can see improved tiles near spot "1". If it turns out the Dutch core is near there, we should also be able to find another lux and probably a river too. I would stay away from the jungle until we are better established, or until we can put those tiles behind our line quickly.

With all the early contacts, I think this "easy monarch level" game will be a real challenge for a long time. But if we continue to play carefully, we should be able to pull through.

I don't think we should send the Armies out quite yet. We will shortly get the rush of two new civs and I think we are in the middle of the Mayan rush with many units showing up. Maybe in 10-15 turns if things are looking good, but right now we risk getting caught without needed support. Also our armies used many of our Swords so we should have more before the armies go out.

When we do think we are safe, then sending the armies is desirable of course.

The next leader is best for the Pentagon I think. Do agree more workers are good, but right now we have troubles leaving our lands. Some more swords will fix that I think.

hit enter

IBT : a Spanish archer dies attacking Paegam

1) 260AD : just killing troops

IBT : no fights

2) 270AD : shuffle units, as two Otto swords and a spear seem to most interested in our capitol
kill more units

IBT : two Hittite swords and spears approach Some Song, could get tricky there

3) 280AD : get a leader, rushes The Pentagon in Wonsan

IBT : Mysticism is in -> take writing as it is the cheapest

more Hittite swords appear in the North

The Pentagon is finished

4) 290AD : merge 1 *elite sword into an army and we have our first 4 man army

IBT : hm, all Hittite units retreat although they would have had access to Some Song

lose an elite sword on defense in Cheju

a Carthage settler - warrior combo appears North

5) 300AD : declare war on Carthage

all armies are manned with 4 swords now

IBT : 3 gallic swords appear in the North

6) 310AD : kill more units

I think the first time in my turns there are no foreign troops within our borders, well that were the good news now the bad ones

IBT : the number of gallics double and there are 7 Hittite swords at Nampo

7) 320AD : two horsemen kill two of the Hittite swords at Nampo
army kills two gallics at Wonsan
Have to leave Paegam with two elite swords (both 4/5 HP) threatened by two reg Spanish archers
reinforce Nampo, Wonsan and Some Song as these three towns are threatened by 6 gallics and 5 remaining Hittite swords

IBT : gallics decide not to attack Wonsan and move beside it
4 Hittite swords suicide at Nampo

More Otto swords approach Cheju

It will be very difficult to break out if we do not start to raze foreign cities, but foreign troops keep on pouring in . We cannot build any more armies without more towns.

8) 330AD : kill whatever we can, but two Spanish archers and 4 wounded javs threaten Paegam defended by two elite swords

IBT : lose three workers, did not recognize that they are reachable
5 more gallics approach Some Song
our army in Nampo barely holds the town, is now at full health again

9) 340AD : more killing, the threatened towns look a little more safe now

IBT : more Hittite swords appear in the N

10) 350AD : kill whatever possible

We roughly hold, but no chance to expand and they keep coming. Met another civ and Shaka has not sent anything than impis and settlers, so his units are to come soon, too. Our research goes down due to more units and our armies are bound at home. No chance to send them out. Furthermore we cannot get new armies without more towns. It does not look very promising at the moment.

http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/47099/GR18_AD350.SAV

I am not in favor of sending out any armies just yet. We will need them to hold on. I am not big on pillaging in these games, unless it it strategic. IOW to cut a lux or a resource.

Cutting some roads will not help us as much as killing units and later towns. These two move armies will not cover much ground anyway.

I think we would have been very lucky to have more than one lux near us, so that is no big deal.

I would be fine with the rest of what was said. If we got that second army down by the Iron, if should be able to prevent any towns though.

As long as we do not have enough towns for more armies we can pop the pentagon and the HE with any spare leaders.

Edit I see we did rush the pentagon, sweet.

Edit 2: Dang more civs in our face.

 this still looks like a rough ride. I hope we can expand even under pressure. We need to do that to be able to get more armies...

got it
