GR18-AWM Genocide Variant vs 30 Civs.

I am not sure that careful is going to be enough. We are going to need some luck and soon. MDI, Knights and maybe some strong MA UU's will make defense hard.

Pikes on defense will make towns hard to take down. We need to get Fued for a free tech, Koreans are sci right?. We need to get more towns quickly to reduce thier holdings.

One thing that helped a lot was running into max cities. If we are seeing so many civs already, we probably have fewer tiles for land and may not see max cap.

With our not being able to expand much and not even being able to improve tiles that we have, research and income are not what they could be and techs are coming slowly.

Preturn: My guess is that Sumeriwon will be attacked. There are so many swords next to it. I kill the 1 hp Spear and bombard the sword stack. I move 2 Spear into Sumeriwon which will hopefully discourage attack (has 3 Spear and Sword). The final Spear guards the sword that killed the 1 hp Spear and the Cats.

IBT: The Ottomans attack Sumeriwon even reinforced! We lose the first two battles losing 2 Spear. After that RNG switches and we win the rest. Sumeriwons remaining two defenders are dropped to 2 (promote to Elite = 3) hp and 1 hp for the Sword. We win 3 other Sword vs Spear in towns Battles. So good RNG overall even with the bad start.

610 AD: Getting Seoul to 15 shields seems unlikely without merging 2 workers. There are only 4 spots with 2 shields so with the center tile we need to work 10 tiles. Furthermore, working the gold mine means no growth, and working a mined plains would be -1 food per turn starvation. So mining a plains doesn't make sense to me. I think best will be to grow or build a settler and expand. Instead I stay at 10 shields but am growing with +2 food.

Destroyed nearby Viking town in the Desert. Captured Worker Destroyed. Kill some units but not a lot. Was able to at least damage most to minimize number of attacks. One Sword lost to an Archer. Most AI units were scattered and attacks would leave us Vulnerable. Some Song has the most units that can attack it. Start build on another Settler. Can we expand? I know not.

IBT: Viking Landing. We win 2 Battles.

620 AD: Lose a Sword to the landed Regular Spear.

IBT: Spot first MDI (Sumerian) Carthage has a Horseman and Swords. Landing by Carthage and Vikings.

630 AD: Kill units. Lose a sword.

640 AD: Founded a new town and start work on founding another.

650 AD: Destroyed Eindhoven to allow the town to have full 9 squares. Coast spotted.

660 AD: Founded a second town.
Stopping here - have had the game long enough

Notes:
I may have lost 1 or 2 units above what is listed. I am not very good at keeping track.
I would use armies to make sure we don't lose towns. Beware the Sumeria initial rush.
My suggestion is to play very carefully. Remember that we chose the harsh variant that really punishes losing a city. Fewer turn played well is better, IMO, if we are to have a chance to win.
When the armies aren't covering towns, then try sending one out with first workers and then a settler under it. It can still kill 1 or 2 nearby units and cover the workers. Then build a city to push back the enemy.

The Save

I got it. There are a lot of galleys in the West. I see that one Viking galley is heading South, so I assume that was the one that dropped units. One Viking galley is heading North. That one will be loaded. What about all the other ones. Do I have to expect landings from these ?

One of the brown ships dropped something so far.

The Sumerian rush may be big. I would keep two Armies in the area as they have good units as well.

It is a tricky situation overall - we are still being attacked from all sides including the coast. City loss is still a big risk since we have to raze our cities rather than recapture. I am wishing I chose the easier version of the variant now

I'd say well done Greebley :goodjob: expanding under such pressure is commendable

NP will be surprised when he comes back. He thought the game might be over by then

He did actually, and we were all pretty optimistic then. What a few more contacts can do...

I do like this slowly edging forward stuff in a civ game. Even if we loose this one, I think we did ok here. And who knows, if that coast would prove real, and some other circumstances start turning our way, anything could happen. This is only monarch after all

0) 2 Hittite swords could attack our 8HP army. Move over a spear from Nampo

no relief in sight yet...got it

save

1.720AD
we are slowly drowning in unit cost, the menace of such games. We need more cities...really

A Paegam, road forward, bombard a lot, defeat 2 units, but lose a sword to a red spear
move army and settler forward
near our capital, defeat 2 intruder spears

defeat 4 swords in our south, more settlers would be nice there to expand even into the desert

MM and we go to 30% science at +1gpt

IT all together there is only 1 attack by a GS that retreats, the rest runs away wounded or moves forward

2.730AD
in our north, defeat 6 units to move army forward with settler underneath, road is built there as well
unfortunately the army that is supposed to protect Suwon is healing and we might lose the city hat is threatened by quite a few units

defeat 2 spears in our core and 2 swords in the south, we need a settler there to be able to expand

IT It's worse than what I thought, from the fog via a roaded front, 5 GS come and attack Suwon, that doesn't even have walls
add the another few units that were present and we lose the town, razed to the ground, the low of the game I fear

gr18730.jpg

3. 740AD
found Taegu, let's see how long that town lasts
defeat a few units in the north, situation in the south more tricky where Ottomans show up with big stacks

IT AI largely ignores our towns this time and goes for the core. We win 3 battles, a merc actually attacks a spear that covers some workers

4.750AD
start to attack Arnhem as it is taking tiles from our new town and in the way for more settlements
clear 4 units around Heaju, this means we can continue to road there
clear 5 more units in the northeast including 2 MDI's
bomb a lot in the south and defeat only 2 units there and mistakenly have a horse exposed

IT the horse turns into a hero defeating 2 swords (its on a hill) and then retreating to a third
we defeat another 3 units, but new Teagu suddenly is hot for the enemy with 7 units there

5. 760AD
Arnhem is no more and give more space to breathe in the north
defeat 8 units in the north and start roading for a next town
not that we are under no pressure but I think we got no choice but to break out

IT as expected, get attacked quite hard, in the east defend against 7 units but lose a spear
Teagu loses a spear but defeats another 2 swords

6.770AD
clear 7 units in th north and south, but there is no real progress whatsoever

IT we go 1:1 at Teagu, losing a spear, army is healing there and should be able to provide some cover now

7 780AD
move another settler into position, I guess Heaju will be only a temporary city anyway
later, if we ever be able to expand, we have to clear some of those really too crammed placements
lose a sword against a Viking spear landed in our hinterland, pretty annoying those units
another climbed one of our gem mountains
lose a sword against archer on flat and take out 3 more units

IT Celts invade our land with their fast UU, rather than attacking, no good
one gem mountain gets pillaged, Hittias attack Taegu and lose 4 swords, but defeat 1 of ours

8.790AD
found Chinje, this will force the many enemy troops to retreat further to heal
lose a sword against sword, clear more units including that irritating spear gem pillager

IT only 4 units attack and get defeated, the rest choses to enter deeper into our territory, not nice
Hittites start Sun Tzu and then we get the best news so far.
Carthage starts to attack Hittite units, they are at war

9.800AD
found Deseertification and we can form yet another army, which we do in the south
then I realize that the Celts actually lost an archer due to negative income I reckon

clear all those Viking units in our land and 2 of those pesky GS

IT lose a sword in the back against a GS, I hate them
nice to see the war between 2 AI's

10.810AD
clear quite a few units and things look a little better now, we have a settler in the south, left it active for next player to decide
there is a 2 sword army in the town as well that can be used to cover the settler
we will get a settler in the north and should try and settle northeast to slowly get to the coast

Good work ThERat. Every town is +4 gold.

Not sure we will be able to switch to Monarchy due to research dropping. Currency could get us Markets that supports more units and Construction to grow above size 6. Both will take time to do and require time to build the UU, but I don't know how else to do it. We can't afford Monarchy - that cuts the gold in half.

It shows why not having the GLib even at Monarchy can (but not always) make the game very much more difficult. We wouldn't care about going to zero science provided we still get the techs. As things are now I don't see us switching to Monarchy without the Markets and Aquaducts OR we could get a lot more towns which means we must continue to expand.

I think currency next + continued expansion is the way we need to go. Everyone who builds a city gets a

lurker's comment:
Ulsan doesn't need walls, unless they are landing units there...

Walls are free, but you get 5 gold for selling them. The thing is, you better not sell one you need. You may not allows know for sure that you do not need a given one, especially in a game like this as you do not see it for so long.

That means you are not on top of the flow, that is what makes some choices hard.

Got it, and off we go.

We had some towns at the front building cats or other units instead of walls. I changed that, but too late I think. Our odds defending Suwon had surely been better with some walls (no offense meant, it is a VERY tough game)
