GR18-AWM Genocide Variant vs 30 Civs.

No, not yet. We were quite lucky there to hold the town. Izzy regularly throws archers at our city, but up to now our defenders are doing good. Brennus sends gallics constantly from the East and also the Mayas and Zulus send numerous units there, so I could not spare an army handling that Spanish town.

Our situation in the N, NE is a little under pressure. The Sumerian send MDIs we can just hit with cats, but we do not have enough units to kill the wounded units, so they still attack Suwon. I had to move a spare army to Suwon to keep the city in the IBT. Several MDIs as well as 2 gallics will be able to attack. We could abandon the town, but I think it will hold. The area at Namwon and Pyongson is also not nice. Pyongsong could fall in the IBT if a redlined gallic attacks the town defended by a healthy sword. I made an attempt to go for Stanvanger, but had to retreat our forces from there. Otto has founded a new town where Denizli was. We have two settlers in the western area. I see this area as the easiest one to expand in the future.

Just a few things I would try to change:
- I think we should be able to move one more army north (and maybe a few more singular troops south as replacement), and move one out towards the Vikings. The Vikings are still on swords for now, so can be allowed to attack now and then.
- Workers in the south could maybe improve outward a bit more. I'm seeing several deserts irrigated there that towns won't be able to grow into for a long time, and to little added benefit. In the north, there is grassland irrigation underway that I don't understand (I do understand what's there now more or less, for chaining, but east of Chinje 2 workers are doing something useless right now I think).
- The situation is the north is much more crowded again. I'd squeeze in another town somewhere south of Pyongsong mountain. That town is very much under pressure, with fast units that could emerge from the fog and still reach it on the same turn. Let's go for Amsterdam soon, and try to establish more towns in that area to cut the continent in half (hopefully).

yes, would be nice to cut the continent in two....got it

lurker's comment: If you had the option of moving an army into Namwon on turn 4, why didn't you? You had a leader, you could have not used him, waited until turn 5, and formed a new army if the other one died defending Namwon.

If we would have lost the army in Namwon we would have had no 4 single swords to fill a new one, so that was not an option. :nono: An empty army does not get you anywhere. An army loss at this stage would be tough to compensate. You do have to consider that you lose 4 units with an army. That would have been quite expensive for a border town which can be rebuilt any time.

Regarding worker moves in general they were threatened at the borders, so I moved them to save places to have them do at least something. We do not have any army that could cover workers at the moment. They have their hands full fighting. If there is irrigation going on it is a misclick. In the Iron City area there was not much to do as there were hostile units all the time.

The most threatened area is Suwon and Dyes Town. At Suwon we should get rid of the Sumerian town there fast as the Sumerian units heal there too quickly.

partial update after 7 turns:

the game is still brutal and very tough to play, there are simply too many enemy units for us to get rid of. I must have accumulated too many of them as on the 5th interturn, the AI decided to attack relentlessly. This almost resulted in a meltdown...almost. We lost 9 units, however no army nor city.

In the meantime, I expanded into the desert between Vikings and Ottoman and cut the continent in half, we now have 33 cities and 8 armies. Construction is due in 8 (unit support dropped somewhat due to that loss ratio)

We met Russia, maybe PP is out already as I have not seen any Russian unit...if knights show up before we get feudalism, we are toast for sure. Let's hope after construction and MM (that should take maybe 16 turns all together), we draw it via our free tech.

Right, I forgot about the 4 units IN the army.

If PP is out, you may need to check the F4 screen for civs you aren't at war with.

- The situation is the north is much more crowded again. I'd squeeze in another town somewhere south of Pyongsong mountain.

Looks like you got your hands full but are certainly giving the AI it's money's worth. :goodjob:

Squeezing in towns is really the only thing I have qualms about. The team is playing a borderline ICS strategy to an extent that hasn't been done, at least in the games I've participated in. The pressure's on, but it would be nice to see you try to stick to CxxC spacing where you can.

Guys I am going to need a skip. In fact was going to PM Greebley to see if he could find a replacement for me, any chance you would be willing to do it M60?

save

Pre-Turn
I would like to settle north, but this has to wait a while, there are too few units there in my mind
unit support is still 56gpt
Hamhung is on a worker with 10 shields but doesn't grow for many turns
wake up settler in Sumeriwon and send it under the wounded army, we want to settle in the desert to expand and get more armies

IT an Impi suicides, but an 2 hp Mace later defeats a sword in the west, troops march in

1.1130AD
south:
move settler/army pair into position and get workers there as well to road
defeat a Viking sword that is in the way defeat 2 red Otto swords

northeast:
defeat Dutch archer+ spear promoting a sword
kill 2 GS and a mace, Suwon again still faces 5 attackers

northwest: situation isn't pretty around dyes town, many potential attacker and few offensive units for us
defeat 2 units in the west

stifle growth in Ulsan to work gems to gain 4 gpt (now that it has a market)

IT not a single attack which is actually not good as the units simply run deper into our territory
we get the info that Byzantines have completed Leo's

2.1140AD
south:
settle Oasis, take out spear in Alesund next door
decide that one of the armies there has to go back north

northeast:
defeat Dutch archer and a pike from Sumer
at Suwon again kill 1 GS, 2 LB and a mace

northwest:
lose a sword while dispatching a Carthage 2 sword landing party
lose another sword taking out one of the annoying impis
defeat another 4 units there
Westwall could fall in the IT actually

IT well, my fears were baseless as we do not get a single attack again
we get CoL, construction next in 14 at 40% science

3.1150AD
getting another MP in our capital let's us work another gem mountain there and that gives us some cash boost
I don't know where from, but can spot Russia in the contact list and declare war, as if we didn't have enough enemies already

south:
defeat 2 spears and raze Alesund
prepare for more expansion next turn, we could expand towards ottomans with their fearsome UU
decide to do that and thus, keep the 3rd army in the south while clearing 3 maces from Ottoman

northeast:
Hyangsan faces a host of enemies, however most are Dutch spears
take out only one of them but bombard quite a few
take out 3 units around Suwon again and move out with army/settler, defeat EW and a pike (in Nagsu)

northwest:
take out 3 units there, dyes town is a little more stable, but overall too many enemy units there

IT this time we get attacked, lose a sword at Nawon against GS
win against 3 Dutch archer in the east, 2 maces attack army in the west
and finally a wounded sword attack in our hinterland and loses
most annoyingly we get 5 landings near Paegam

4. 1160AD
south:
defeat 1 Ottoman mace
found Sariwon in the desert, move on to Riza
that's the only place where we can expand at least

northeast:
take care of the red GS and 3 maces
take out 2 pikes in Nagsu and 1 spear

northwest:
take out 2 of the landings and need to hope the other wounded units do not attack
take out 2 more units but 3 towns could be threatened in the IT, this will be a nail biter

IT what a horror interturn
I couldn't write down and follow but we go 14:9 as the AI decides to attack wherever it can:
Wounded units, attacking armies in cities etc.
whatever that was that triggered it
on the plus side, we didn't lose a city but it was razor thin...we have too few units to deal with all the enemies
production replaces a mere 2 units

5.1170AD
south:
kill 2 units in Riza, bring another settler in position
defeat an Ottoman mace

Pull all the cats back into our towns to be able to deal with those Vikings
the mountains there are very bad for us

northeast:
clear 5 units and gain a leader, just in time for another army next turn
defeat 2 units and finally raze Nagsu

northwest:
clear the remaining 2 units landed last turn
clear 2 more units but have a redlined army that might need to defend in the IT
we need the new army there badly

IT much better this time as we get attacked only twice and win both fights

6.1180AD
south:
found More Armies to give us exactly that
send new army to the west to help out there
defeat a redlined pike and 3 more units in Riza, town still stands

Pull all the cats back into our towns to be able to deal with those Vikings
the mountains there are very bad for us

northeast:
clear few units, bomb some and found Haeju

northwest:
defeat 3 units and climb that mountains next to Pyongyong that the GS likes to use

IT no attacks, but a big stack approached West Wall

7.1190AD
south:
defeat a total of 3 Ottoman troops, 2 in Riza but town still stands
clear 3 Viking swords and reagin control of the mountains
lose a sword though

northeast:
clear some units, we need more troops to protect workers and expand there
we also need to road to our new town, army defeats 2 units there
while clearing an archer (and losing a sword in the process) gain another leader
army is still far away, send it to Ulsan to rush a library or so

northwest:
clear 6 units there, new army is in west wall just on time to defend against the stack of maces (now 5 left)

IT good results here, we lose a mere sword while the enemy suicides a lot
the Viking mountain sees 5 death swords, Suwon again is attacked by 4 wounded maces that all die

8.1200AD
south:
Ottomans now assembled at More Armies, pull in a healthy army
the cats suddenly forgot how to aim as we make only 2 dents at the Vikings, take out a spear there but a reg sword remains at full health
pike/mace killed in Riza, town still standing

northeast:
take out 2 redlined units, area a little more quite for moment without GS around
army takes out a red pike
move out another army and we stand at the gates of Amsterdam

northwest:
Dyes town now faces the mace stack
take out a landing at Paegam
manage to capture a Sapnish cat from the Zulus (we are allowed to keep them)
defeat 2 swords, take out 2 maces at dyes town

IT GS appear again near Amsterdam
Ottoman maces actually attack More Armies and lose 3 maces
no other attacks
we get 7 new units, the losses from the 5th interturn are replenished now

9.1210AD
south:
lose a sword taking out red spear and sword from Vikings
at least the southern area is clear of them
pull 3rd army back to More Armies to heal as we face more maces and Riza has more than 2 units inside anyway

northeast:
take out 6 mixed units
Amsterdam is size 10 and has vet spears inside this could be tough
take out GS to cross river, we don't want to attack across a river there
take out spear there

northwest:
take out landed sword and a stray archer + sword

IT 3 units land at paegam as usual, we defeat 8 units without losing
More Armies is the Ottoman maces graveyard as 5 of them die
we get 2 more settlers and 2 raxes as we need more units

10.1220AD
south:
pull out 1 army to block road access to More Armies and defeat a pike in Riza

northeast:
clear 5 redlined units

northwest:
clear 3 landings, defeat 3 units, but quite a few units are around dyes town, leave army inside unmoved for full healing

we do have 6 settlers for further expansion, construction is due in 5, but we can juggle between 40 to 50% science
we have a MGL in our capital, we would need 3 more towns for another army though

The situation:

We have 2 armies in More Armies, Riza still has some units inside that heal, take it on next turn, we have 3 settlers in the vicinity to settle around here
avoid the volcano

gr181220a.jpg

Amsterdam is a tough nut, let the army heal and attack next turn again
we also still need to connect Suwon and Haeju, there is a settler in Pyongson to settle once Amsterdam is taken out
GS always come from north of Amsterdam

gr181220b.jpg

the area in the northwest, rich in enemy units
dyes town is threatened this time, so leave the army unmoved to fully heal after the attacks, landings always take place at Paegam
gr181220c.jpg

Agree and my latest 4 cities are all CxxC

Guys I am going to need a skip. In fact was going to PM Greebley to see if he could find a replacement for me, any chance you would be willing to do it M60?

Thanks for asking, but I'm disqualified. I've already looked at CivAssist. ;)

We still have five players, so I don't know that we need a replacement, though if someone wants to join, that is fine.

BTW, it looks like I will be taking some vacation time - about a week and a half starting the 15th. NP will be back then so we will still have 4 players until I get back.

Got it then. I'll take a look at the save tonight, but I don't think I'll get much play in. That'll be for tomorrow night, and then all day Saturday :)

That's good to know. Where are the Sumerians coming from? Also from that direction, or rather from the east of Haeju?
