lurker's comment: Next time, turn IM off before playing civ. :mischief:

lurker's comment: In my timezone, it's not the new year for another 3 1/2 hours. :p

Happy New Year (it's 2pm here already).

Hmm, why did we go for the wheel? Seems an odd choice to me as I would either head for writing (GLib) or iron working. I rather we get sword up soon. The wheel doesn't help us in the short term.

Yes, Happy New Year to players and lurkers. [party]

Hmm, why did we go for the wheel? Seems an odd choice to me as I would either head for writing (GLib) or iron working....The wheel doesn't help us in the short term.

I agree. I'm not criticizing Elephantium, since our discussion of what to research next was terse, and probably not much use to a new member of the team. But we can't let the four turns we have invested in the Wheel commit us to the wrong tech path, and we should make a change now--IMO to Writing, since this has the look of a Great-Library-or-bust game.

We have to get the lux rate down to 20% and the science rate up to 50%, which will speed up our research quite a lot. This will mean that our towns other than the capital will only be able to work four tiles each, whether we choose to use their extra citizens for scientists or peeled-off workers.

I'd start the GLib pre-build in Edrine now.

Preturn:
Edrine isn't using the cows? Given the injured Archers, I am guessing that the citizens just got moved off. I would move them back before handoff - the next player may not notice. ( a note that the cities haven't been MM'ed would do fine).
Not sure why our capitol is on wealth - switch to Spear since we are under unit limit.

For the GLib,
Ok, I do the switch to writing I agree GLib is what we need here. 875BC is a bit late to be starting it, so definitely it is worth the switch and prebuild. Basically, I like starting it around 1000 BC or so and should have mentioned it specifically as NP mentions. Its hard to know exactly when to start it since the time that the AI gets Lit is really random.

We can go 20% Lux rate, but have to give up a shield in our Edrine. The Palace is 43 turns and Writing is 28 so I think this will work out fastest.

Decide I want walls in Uskadar and Omaha so switch them.

Decide to kill the lone Warrior near our towns with an Archer. Move an archer out of the town over the mountain to reveal a few more squares. It will move back next turn.

IBT: Hmm, we now have a second neighbor we haven't met as Rhodes (green) is built SE of the towns over the mountains. I am pretty sure that is a Greek city.

850 BC: Send settler S where all those trees are near 3 deer. It seems actually a good spot despite being near the tundra. 3 Deer can support forest squares on Tundra and maybe even one of the mountains.

IBT: Some American Archers spotted (3).

825 BC: Towns are reaching size 5 and stalling - hiring scientists. I may make some workers in some. Writing is in 19. We may be able to run some turns at 30% Lux to speed the palace. I am sticking with the current setup for now though. Ideally we can time Lit with the Palace by switching later.

Our Conscript Warrior see a Zulu Impi.

IBT: Conscript warrior is killed by the Impi. I was wondering if I wanted to disband to avoid meeting Greece - it was decided for me.

800 BC: Kill 3 American Archer at the cost of one of ours.
In order for Istanbul to build its settler, lux needs to go to 30%. Since we wanted some turns of that, anyway I do so.

775 BC: Mostly quiet.

IBT: Portugal: Spear and two Warrior spotted.

750 BC: Waiting for the troops. Settler will finish in Capitol.

IBT: 2 More Portuguese (Archers) Spotted, Korean Acher, Warrior spotted, Impi shows up.

730 BC: Settler completes. I send it west. We go back to 20% Lux
Edrine has now got more shields (mines completed) so it is in 32 and Writing is 16. I don't think we want to switch back to 30% as much as I thought we would, though that might change.

710 BC: lining up our Archers to attack next turn. Use Elite Warrior to get and elite Victory and cover with Spear (against some Warriors).

IBT: Koreans in Range. Looks like the Zulu Impi are going for the cows. Koreans ignore Spear and head closer.
American Archer Spotted.

690 BC: Warrior way south steps on a road he found. Looks like a colony attempt to the dyes? If so some AI may be building a road to the dyes we can connect to.
Killing the American Archer reveals another one so I cover with a Spear that was waiting for that possibility.
Portuguese Spear is blocked from our developed squares. We are hard pressed to cover everywhere I wish (don't want Zulu on the Cows either).

IBT: Warrior on road killed, but he found the end first. It doesn't go far.

670 BC: Kill Spear and 2 Warrior stack plus another Archer vs Portugal. Killed American Archer.
Still blocking cows but it uses a lot of resources. These Impi are going to be a pain. They can stand in the mountains and threaten to move and pillage cows.

IBT: Good Lord, we are surrounded by unmet civs as a French city is place in the NE. Babylon, Greek, and now France.

650 BC: Kill first Impi without loss.

Notes:
We see only 1 American Archer (observed another Archer next to it), 1 Portuguese Archer, 1 Korean Archer, and 2 Impi, Archer, and Warrior for Zulu (most still in mountains), so not heavy units yet.
We have two settlers unsettled.
Writing is in 10 turns, Palace in 28. We have a lot of scientists due to size 5 towns. Go to 30% lux and drop science 10% and switch the scientists to working and the tech is much slower. I think we should finish up writing at 20% lux and then play with the lux vs palace to balance with Literature.

We still have only 4 contacts, but know there will be 3 more soon.

We have a real lack of Elite units. There is one Warrior. Not a single archer got an advancement that I can recall.

The Save

got it, playing tonight

It sure looks like a rough ride. I wonder whether the sedentary barb setting has caused so many contacts. Hope we can survive until we get the Glib and iron hopefully.

save

1.630BC
finish off 2 impis (both retreated) and an archer that all invaded our land
defeat 2 American archers near Buffalo to advance our settler there, lose an archer though [5-1]

2.610BC
there is now an archer next to Kafa, which is defended only by an archer
exchange an archer to take out a Portuguese archer...not nice [6-2]

IT we are very lucky as the American reg archer redlines our archer but then dies, Kafa stands [7-2]

3.590BC
found Ankara cramming in Buffalo for the time being
work the gold mountains at Izmit, no growth but higher revenue for now

IT a Korean horse shows up, not good. Zulu start ToA

4. 570BC
defeat American archer next to Ankara, found Salonika in the hills east of our capital
cut down a Portuguese archer that would otherwise step onto a cow [9-2]

IT lose a spear at Izmit to Zulu archer. more enemies show up [9-3]

5.550BC
move units about, nothing much I can do

IT two Korean horses move into our territory, an Impi joins in and two units suicide at Izmit [11-3]

6.530BC
cut down both horses, one retreats first, then lose archer flat against impi, no unit to attack nearby
take out American archer next to Ankara, finally angrily take out red archer on mountain [16-4]

IT excellent, the dumb impi attacks exposed archer, redlines it, but loses and promotes it to elite
Americans lose another archer at Ankara [18-4]
Egypt finishes Mausoleum

7.510BC
attack archer next to buffalo, there is another archer outside, but I move 2 more archers in position
cover with spear [19-4]

IT Babylon is surely encroaching us, no contact yet though

8. 490BC
take out impi after retreating it
manage to defeat 2 spears and take out Buffalo, one exposed archer has to die, retreat spear/archer into Ankara
[22-4]

IT more and more units come streaming in and occupy the cows at our palace prebuild, we lose the red archer
writing comes in. lit next [22-5]

9.470BC
found Mugla, now there isn't that much space left
go all out and defeat 3 Korean units, 2 archers and 1 horse and gain a MGL
what to do with it? It's still more than 30 turns to get iron if at all
form an army but leave it empty now
take out another archer next to Ankara [26-5]

our research is actually slower now than the prebuild (and we run slight deficit)

IT great RnG as Zulu suicide 4 units at our hill outpost Salonika [30-5]
we get the FP message
Aydin shuts down as the enemy interrupted the tiles

10. 450BC
take out the culprit at Aydin
take out 2 archers next to Ankara [33-5]

Research should be possible to match, we can always work less shields if required

I left 2 units unmoved, a spear near Salonika. I wouldn't move into the town to attract more attacks
I also left the army still empty, do we want to fill it with archers or leave it empty until we get swords? Or build a pillager spear army? I am still undecided

Amazingly we still have not met those 3 Civs
gr19450.jpg

I am inclined to wait for swords with the Army. Pillaging isn't as meaningful on such huge maps and Archer Armies are awful. If we ever get to the point of needing an army or being overrun we can change our minds.

I think we should continue research on IW after getting Lit in case the GLib fails.

Err, sorry about that, I should have written something in my log and/or checked Edrine. The capitol was on Wealth because I wanted a forest chop to go to Izmit - I switched it on turn 10 and forgot to switch it back before I saved the game

Agree with you, Greebley. Let's try and keep the army empty for swords unless we need it very badly. I hope we can keep the current pace and get the Glib in about 30 turns. I would also go for IW after finishing literature. I hope we have iron in those hills. If not, we are in for a very rough ride.

I stopped at 290BC because Portugal just started the GLib. 4 Civs that we know of have TOA in the works. America, Zulu, Korea and France. We are 27 turns away from completion. Do we continue on or switch to FP and lose 14 shields? I just have to believe that civs we don't know will cascade with cities cranking more than the 7 spt we're making with the pre-build. Unfortunately, even if we switch, there isn't a whole lot else to build, at least until we get some iron.

We did lose Salonika, but has since been rebuilt in the same location.
