Would that be honorable if we buy hard goods from Spain or Korea for gpt and resource and then boot them to trigger a war?

That is allowed. The AI is completely stupid about making war declarations and we are allowed to take advantage of that. (honorable is a slightly different word in my civ vocabulary influenced by the Realms Beyond site, but I am assuming you are using it to mean "allowed").

About tech monopoly: a cavalry has showed up ...
About temple: Our lux can drop to 10% now, but Ur has to hire some specialists. If there is a temple in Ur, its 11 citizens can all work tiles.

Note we can make invest 122 gpt (and several scientists) into science with 10% lux. This amount is nice, but it still means we will get a tech in 10-20 turns. I don't think any monopoly is likely in near future.

460 (1): The Vikings offer us an alliance against the Hittites. No, thanks.

470 (2): Not much.

480 (3): We lose a galley on the first turn of a suicide run. I thought it was worth trying one more time, but I won't throw any more shields down that hole.

Someone wipes out the Greeks. Aren't they supposed to survive the early part of the game? :D

Lagash granary --> worker, Agade aqueduct --> granary.

The Carthaginians begin Magellan.

490 (4): Research down to 20%, Feudalism still due in one.

Feudalism --> Invention, due in fifteen turns at 50% research.

500 (5): Sumer granary --> trebuchet.

510 (6): The Persians (16 cities) and the Ottomans (16 cities) show up on the diplo list. They're both ahead of us by all the techs we can see.

Isabella begs us fervently to join the anti-Hittite alliance--"Oh, the humanity!"--but we have to decline.

The Hittites and the Carthaginians are building Bach.

520 (7): The Celts appear on the diplo list. They're the ones who eliminated the Greeks, and they have about forty cities, with 17% of the world's area and 16% of its population. They don't have twice anyone else's culture yet, but they're getting there. Houston, we have a problem.

530 (8): Bad-Tabira library --> aqueduct.

The Ottomans begin Magellan.

540 (9): Zzzzzz....

550 (10): The Arabs have had a few turns to introduce themselves and haven't done it, so I buy contact with them (just 55 gold to the Ottomans). We've finally found a culture more primitive than ours--they're still in the AA. They have sixteen cities.

Well, a quiet round. We also built four workers and seven trebuchets (with two more about to complete), and explored a lot of Spain and Korea.

The Koreans are our only neighbours who aren't at war with anybody, unfortunately. But the Spanish would be a much worse opponent in the near future, because they're in their GA (I've seen a Conquistador victory).

We've made a reasonable start on building up a strike force for the Korean war. We may not be able to go to war with them in ten turns when our wines deal with them expires, but it shouldn't take too much longer than that. Since our Enk armies can cover our longbowmen and trebs against anything the Koreans have, we won't need musketmen, although we may want some extra Enks.

Perhaps we should gift the Arabs up to our tech level so that their research might assist us, though frankly I've never seen good results from this play when it's used on an AI civ that's miserably backward to start with.

Lagash is at 10 spt and +5 food, so we're on an excellent cycle of a trebuchet and a worker every four turns there, with the population never falling below seven. Things don't work out quite so neatly in Sumer, but we can peel off a worker every so often there too, since the town has a granary.

The news of a potential run away civ is not good news. Not much we can do about it though.

Agree that Korea seems the best. I would still like an alliance if we could get one. They will just have so many troops that WW will take its toll before we make significant progress.

MapStat tells us that Celt has 39 :nuke: cites, 14280 culture (+292). The next one in culture is Ottomans, 16 cities, 7752 (+122). Then Carthage, 10 :D cities, 7548 (+114). The strongest AI in our continent, Hittites, has 31 cities (note they had 28 when my turn finished), 5916 (+145). Man, Celt will quickly surpass 2x any other civ in culture. :scan:

I don't know how accrute these +292, +145 etc. are. If Celts' culture indeed increases by 292 per turn, that means they will gain 10 K in about 30 turns (it will be faster and faster), and it will cost about 400 :D turns for them to reach 130 K. Looks safe in this sense.

And I guess the newly met civs are a bit backward comparing to our continent, because all the MA wonders belong to our continent. It might be good to gift Arab into MA. Because they are religious, maybe they will go for mono and theology, then we can trade with them. And, of course, we can ally them vs. Korea or any one. Although they can't send troops here, they can make our target more willing to concede, and they might buy in more dogpiles.

again the Celts are the big monsters :(

we could gift Arabia, no harm doing that. I also agree on fighting to get some techs

Arabs knows monarchy, but down literature, construction, currency, and of course MA techs. I'm pretty sure any AI will go for feudalism first in MA (like nationalism in IA). So we can first give construction and currency to them, then trade monarchy for feudalism, and hope they go to mono, chivalry (their UU), and theology. We definitely don't want to give them engineering before they know mono, because it opens the way to invention, another insanely pursued tech.

As for the techs i don't think it makes sence to gof guns and LBs. The nearest monopoly tech we can get this way is chemistry which is still quite unlikely. But if we choose the lower branch we have a chance at many monopoly techs.

We need invention not because we want to get monopoly (which is basically impossible in near future), but that we truly need longbow as attacker. Suppose the international situation becomes the best of our dream: Spain and Korea beat each other, and one of them is losing and dogpiled by a bunch of civs. Can we jump in and get some cities? No, if we have only archers (even if they are elite :D ). The difference between 4 attack and 2 attack is so huge that AIs have obssession to invention like to nationalism.

Gunpowder can wait, because our EW armies can assure our artilleries free from tech vs. cavalry. But it is still very important to know where are the saltpeters. In nero3, people were very awkward because they wanted to pillage France's salt but didn't know gunpowder yet (actually the only MA tech the players had was engineering, so miserable ... :nuke: )!

Many guys know navigation now. Maybe we can trade map around ...

Sorry guys, i couldn't play yestoday, and it seems like i'll be busy today too. If anybody wants to play now we can swap.

I didn't start yet and i'm still quite busy, i'll try to play handy21 today and this game tomorrow.
