All right. What's this I hear about leaders? I've had units attain the rank of elite, but never anything more. What am I missing? Is there a certain era I have to reach or technology I need that allows leaders?

You need very very much Patience sometimes.
I had my first War with the Iroquoise and had some Elite-Units fight with Iroquoise Units and nothing happened.
Then, at my second war with them (a nice World war with me and 2 other Civs against them) when I had conquered an Iroquoise city and the enemy started its Counterattack with Dozens of Units attacking the fortified Marines, Infantry-Units and Panzers within the City I finally got my first great Leader, Barbarossa.
Don´t know how much Battles I have fought in this second war til he emerged. Maybe 40-50. And I played Germany, which is militaristic and therefore has a better chance of obtaining great Leaders.

sometimes u get one the first battle(when he is already elite) sometimes u never get one, the first one happend to me though, it was a swords man that fought 3 battles, on from regular to vet, one from vet to elite and one to become a great leader(u still get to keep the swordsman if u didnt know that)

My First and only leader came out of my Cossack after I defeated a bowman...A leader just pops out...Maybe you have a better chance of leaders from the Civs special unit??? OR i have just been very lucky since I'm not involved in a lot of battles.

I believe this is completely random.

But it's interesting to see the leader's names though.

Russia : Ivan the Terrible, Lenin, Stalin,
Babylonian: Argum, Sargon,

If you do a lot of fighting, you will begin to see leaders appear, but the most I have ever seen is two in one game. It's all random, apparently. Supposedly the militaristic socities have a better chance of producing great leaders.

There's a certain chance of creating a Great Leader every time an elite unit of yours (one with 5 hit points) wins a battle. The chance is greater if it's one of your unique units, if you're militaristic, or if you have Heroic Epic.

Some games I never get any, but I have had as many as five in one game.

As of yet ( out of the very few games I've played ) I've only had great leaders appear in one of the, and that was when I was playing the Japanese...

Both appeared during a "Napoleonic era" war against Rome, both I believe coming out of Elite Cavalry defeating roman musketmen and riflemen. Tojo and Hirohito to be precise, I believe.

Other than that I've yet to gain any leaders...

There is a 1 in 16 chance of a Great Leader being spawned every time an Elite Unit wins a battle. The chance improves to 1 in 12 for Militaristic civs.

Oddly enough, my first GL came while playing the Greeks and it was during battle against the Romans.

Has anyone ever gotten a great leader out of a sea battle?

Where would it put him? In a transport?

I've been trying to get a great leader from barbarians, but it hasn't happened yet. Besides, they keep making ships, and I'm not sure I could get a great leader from a sea battle.

I got two in the first game i played. And I played badly. I was the french (commercial industrious) and avoided most wars. The first one was a musketeer fighting some weak lousy unit, and the second was a cavalry, again fighting some weak lousy unit.

The next time round I played the Germans (mil, sci) (very well, to toot my own horn), and got absolutely zilch, despite annhiliating (I can never get that word right) two civs singlehanded and beating a third one up quite badly.

It seems like Great Leaders are more common in the Ancient and Middle ages. I rarely get one after that.

if you do get a leader.
build an army. if it wins a battle then you can build a couple of small wonders which enhance the chance of you getting leaders in the future.
however using a leader to rush a wonder is possible much more useful.

If I get one early on..I always try to rush a wonder like the Pyramids or the Oracle or something..then I never see them again. I have never had the Epic..etc. I just can't resist the free wonder thing. I want to build the Heroic Epic..but never do. Does it help generate more leaders?

the heroic epic increases your chances to spawn a great leader, yes, and when u have three armies in the field u can build the pentagon wich increases ur army limit from three to four.

They might as well just call it a 'construction worker' rather than a great leader cuz their catagorically useless in combat. I was initially excited about the whole army concept when i heard about it but its just not worth the time, especially if you have to manufacture an army once you get the appropriate wonders. Whenever I get them i scoot them to the nearest big project and disband.
