Lincoln is FAR from my "favorite" president, but I think that he qualifies as the "best" or "greatest" - but then again, it was the Civil War and such that made him so great, and who knows how another good president might have performed in Lincoln's shoes...
My favorite would probably be Theodore Roosevelt - who should be on your poll!
I think a lot of people are not going to pick George Washington simply because he is the obvious choice and they don't like picking the obvious choice.
A couple things
1.Washington wasnt a good leader, he was a good General, same as Grant and Eisenhower.
2.FDR I would pick but then you think, what if JFK or Lincoln or some other President had had almost 4 full terms what could they have accomplished in said time.
3.Lastly my choice would be Teddy Roosevelt, a good soilder, brillant public servant, and an extremely good enviormentalist.
Washington...Without him we don't have any more presidents. He commanded his troops well in battle, and is the reason the consitutional convention took place as it did. Maybe the most respected person in American history. (at his time of presidency).
Abe- Without him the country could very easily be separated and while I wouldn't say he alone ended slavery...he the president who had the most to do with it, and the man at the top in one of our countries darkest wars.
FDR- While many would disagree with me on this...FDR's social programs helped the US out of the depression. He was the President during WWII and he led the country to a victory even though he died before the war ended. He presided over the US in a time of great change...and he did so not without fault...but very well.
Jefferson...however, is my favorite American President, but not for what he did during his presidency but before and after.
Moss, if you really look at it, FDR's programs sunk us further into the depression. It wasn't until the war did we actually pick things up and get out of it.
I said Abe Lincoln. But could a mod change my vote to "other". Herbert Hoover was the greatest president to ever live. He saved millions of forigen lives from starvation, was known as both the Great Engineer and the Great Humanitarian. He did more against the Depression than FDR ever did.
Absolutely disgusting that Reagan, a man that sponsored genocide in Latin America, be mentioned in the same breath as such greatness as Thomas Jefferson.
