Guess the Civs in the 2nd expansion - One World!

I think we'll be having nine new civs just like in Gods&Kings:

1. Portugal: Because it's the last major European power missing
2. Zulu: I wish they wouldn't be there but Firaxis will most likely include them
3. Sumeria: I kind of believe they'll be in because of being in both civ 3&4
4. Assyria: Good warmonger civ, quite famous and so far neglected
5. Indonesia( probably under some other name): Big, distinct culture, covers so far empty area on the map and often requested
6. Poland: Big fanbase and could be an interesting civs to play, maybe a religion and cavalry civ
7. Brazil: Modern civ and fills a neglected area
8. Moors: I think they could be fun :p
9. Vietnam: Old civilization and important in recent history, good choice for a turtle civ

I believe it didn't exist long enough to be in game. But it sure could work as a civ: Leader, UU/UB and UA are pretty easy to come up with.
Maybe Yugoslavia will be the surprise civ they put in nobody expected! ;)

Like your list, I am pretty much cool with whatever they give us, the more choice and variety the better in my view.
I'd love to see Polish Winged Husars as a UU, mainly because my Muscovites of Ivan the Terrible faced them so many times accross the table in the 70's, and it was Ancient/Renaissance warganing that eventually led me to Civ.

I'm guessing there will be 9 new civs
Ones I gladly await
1. Zulu: My very first civ game ever (III) I versed the impi in an early war that was the instant start of my civ addiction. They have to much history in the franchise to exclude them.
2. Portugal: Expansion civ in III and IV. No reason to expect not to see them
3. Sumeria: Also III/IV expansion civ. I just hope the leader artwork does not look as bad as in IV

Ones I would like to see
4. Hittites. I have unsettled business with them, but they may not provide enough unique early gameplay. early chariot..egyptians already taken. very early melee, also taken.
5. Assyria: Maybe the same early game uniqueness problem as Hittites
6. Another N.A.N.A. North American Native American tribe. Plains horse based.
7. Inuit. Just cause I want to see an ice/tundra based gameplay

For the other spots there is almost nothing they can make I won't be happy with really! Well besides something abstract (e.x. IV "Native Americans")

Vietnam, Indonesia, Poland and Brazil might would all be great.

I like how they've made some brave and unexpected choices with civs in the game, stuff like Polynesia, Sweden and Songhai. I bet there's going to be some first-timer civs with the expansion.

And my predictions:
Sioux
Poland
Brazil
Zulu
Vietnam

Why all the love for Vietnam when in the some region you have great civilizations like Indonesia (and previous), Khmer and so forth. Is it really just because of the Vietnam war? Surely Americans understand that the World is bigger than them and what they've been involved in during the last few centuries?

I know there are previous reasons to include them, but the idea that anyone would suggest Vietnam before the Khmer or Indonesia or equivalent seems quite silly. They were significant in their own region, but not that significant.

Personally I'd see Indonesia over Vietnam, but if the expansion has some sort of colonial/imperial theme, it might very well include nations that fought against imperial powers (Zulu, Kongo, Sioux, Comanche) and nations that emerged from colonies (Brazil) plus an imperial power itself (Portugal).

As Vietnam has fought against Chinese, French and Americans, it could fit this "theme" (if there is one!). And of course the Vietnam war and defeating the French in battle of Dien Bien Phu is very well known, and Civilization series often take the populist things, like giving Carthage the war elephants.. :)

Surely generalizing all forum-goers who take interest in a culture to be Americans is something you wouldn't do, right? Or going further and generalizing the populous of an entire nation to be so ego-centric they only show interest in countries they’ve warred with. Surely those weren't your aims.

Ones I would like to see
4. Hittites. I have unsettled business with them, but they may not provide enough unique early gameplay. early chariot..egyptians already taken. very early melee, also taken.
5. Assyria: Maybe the same early game uniqueness problem as Hittites

Egypt's chariot is ranged isn't it? The Hittites could have a melee chariot with lots of attack and would later only be replaced by the knight when it come to strength.
Hittites could also get a superior swordsman, since they were the ones to discover Iron working.
Assyria is a bit tricky as the Huns have taken the role of the early warmonger. But I could see Firaxis come up with something interesting.

If you look at the post you'll notice that Vietnam usually comes after Indonesia in the proposed civ lists. Gameplay wise Vietnam fits the category of a turtle civ excellently and since there will be a turtle civ in the expansion pack it's seems Vietnam fits the role pretty well.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Vietnam

Because it is one of the oldest Civilizations (from 2879 BC) from the region which is still alive today. I find Vietnam to be very exciting and interesting historically. A jungle Civ which could have many kind of unique bonuses. The Vietnam War is just something everyone recognises - perhaps it would make a fun modern era Scenario for modders or even official one.

Though I would love to see all three of them; Indonesia, Khmer and Vietnam (and in that order).

The nine Civilizations I most of all want to see in the 2nd expansion:

1) Kongo (Perhaps Food/Production Civ)
2) Sioux (or Cahokians) (Culture/Expansion)
3) Portugal (Gold/Exploration)
4) Indonesia (Majapahit) (Faith/Navy)
5) Timurid (Military/Espionage)
6) Zulu (Military/Expansion)
7) Khmer (Culture/Faith)
8) Vietnam (Culture/Military)
9) Israel (representing both ancient and modern Israel) (Faith/Espionage)

+10) Inca (just like Spain was in G&K from Double Civilization and Scenario Pack: Spain and Inca)

As you can see there aren't any good candidates for Science bonus. Only one I can think of is Phoenicia which would be awesome choice (Navy/Science) even though we have Carthage in the game already. Sumeria is another potential Civ for Science/Culture bonuses.

Strong choices but not my favorites:

+ Brazil (Probably the best choice for Modern Civ (which are greatly needed) but I think addition of Portugal is sufficient) (Happiness/Food)
+ Inuit (Highly unique and would be a interesting but a big surprise choice. Would disabling the start bias cripple them completely?) (Navy/Food)
+ Poland (There is already a surplus of European Civs and I believe Portugal is only new euro-civ in OW) (Specialists/Happiness)
+ Sumeria (Legacy Civ but recently I've started to think we won't see them because of WOTAW DLC) (Culture/Science)
+ Hittites (Legacy Civ but recently I've started to think we won't see them because of WOTAW DLC) (Military/Expansion?)
+ Mali (Because of Songhai I highly doubt we'll see this Legacy Civ in CiV) (Gold/Production)

If I had to pick 9 civilizations to be in the game, I'd pick:

1. Portugal
2. Indonesia
3. Khmer
4. Zulu
5. Sumeria
6. The Moors
7. Mali
8. Poland
9. Cahokia

I also doubt we'd see the Inca as a tenth, that way nobody would buy that DLC. I'd expect a 10th Civilization, maybe the Hittites, as a special pre order Civilization, later sold as DLC as a start of the second DLC run that will herald the end of the Civ V production cycle.

I really doubt we'll be seeing Mali given Songhai and its current city list. Other than that i'd agree with pretty much everything you just said.

Probably most of you already saw the poll and voted
But as this is another thread about civs, here is a link to the civ poll:
http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=460009

Also, here is the last result, from a couple weeks ago:
Current vote number: 289 (+116):

1. Portugal: 139 (+65)
2. Zulu: 135 (+59)
3. Indonesia: 118 (+36)
4. Brazil: 103 (+53)
5. Sumer: 100 (+38)
6. Poland: 98 (+38)
7. Kongo: 94 (+28)
8. Hittites: 88 (+36)

9. Sioux: 81 (+27)
10. Tibet: 74 (+24)
11. Khmer: 69 (+24)
12. Assyria: ~65 (+27)
13. Phoenicia: 63 (+26)
14. Hungary: 62 (+29)
15. Hebrews: ~60 (+24)
15. Morocco/Moors: 60 (+18)

17. Armenia: ~50 (+18)
17. Zimbabwe: 50 (+13)
19. Mali: 49 (+18)
20. Vietnam: ~46 (+15)
21. Khazars: 45 (+11)
21. Nubia: ~45 (+15)
21. Swahili/Kilwa: ~45 (+15)
With at least 3-4 North American Native civs going in this list somewhere between 45-70 votes
Apache, Navajo, Comanche, Mississippian are among the most likely candidates that made it over 45.

I'd laugh if Portugal/Zulu weren't in. Those two have consistently been on most people's lists. On the off-chance they are not in, they'd probably be guaranteed DLC's in the future. I doubt a third expansion would ever happen, but it would be far into the future so who knows? I'd leave it up to Menzies to predict a third expansion, if there ever is one ;)

Looks like a decent enough civ list if one goes by the top 9 civs of the poll. Wouldn't complain if those would be the civs in the Expansion pack.

Indonesia also emerged from colonial powers (the Dutch and the Japanese). Even further back in time before Indonesia was "Indonesia" they also fought back world powers, including Kublai Khan and the Mongols (they actually deflated them so much that they ended their reign) and numerous powerful Chinese kingdoms.

The Huns are migrants from Central Asia who conquered Hungary and after the fall of Attila, dispersed.
True, but you are totally wrong in almost everything else
You have to get your facts right before comments like this
Hungary was also conquered by more Central Asian people some time between the 4th and 8th centuries.
If you mean the Avars, they have no connection to Hungarians
If you mean Hungarians, they conquered and settled in the Carpathian-basin in the 9th century

These guys brought much of what is todays modern Hungarian language.
Not at all
Neither the huns or the avars had this much influence on Hungary
Huns are probably distant relatives, while some Avars merged into the Hungarian tribes after the occupation of the Carpathian-basin
Nevertheless, the Hungarian/Magyar tribes are totally separate from both

But Hungarian people today and in the medieval era are genetically very European
Certainly not, I would never say Finno-ugric is genetically or culturally very european. At least not in the average european sense, not when comparing to the surrounding cultures

and have little influence from either of these two groups.

If you mean huns and avars, you are right of course
But if you mean the actual hungarian tribes from the 8-9th century, then all the influence is from there

You are in fact more represented by Austria, at least it became Austria-Hungary.

Pff. Nonsense
Austria-Hungary was significant, yes. But it represents Austria, not Hungary
Medieval Hungary, from 900-1500 is the form what should be included when we are talking about Hungary
One of the most powerful medieval states in Europe

I'd like to see Wallachia, or Transylvania, with the leader of Vlad Tepes III. Their UU could be Boyars. Their UA could be Great Generals also cause -10% combat strength in adjacent enemy units. Their second UU could be vampires.

On a serious note, maybe Mexico? Canada? Finland? Australia? New Zealand? Ireland? Wales? Pakistan? There's a lot on the table, many of which never seem to make it into the game. I actually expect they will forego Portugal this time around, because we already have the Netherlands (although the Carrack is a Caravel replacement historically, not a Privateer replacement). I fully expect Zulu (another African civ) and Brazil (a modern South American civ). Other than that, no idea.

You appear to have missed my point entirely, but perhaps i could have been more clear. My argument was that the Huns are not representative of Hungary and Hungary is not strictly speaking a descendant culture except territorially, and you seem to agree. The rest of this post is therefore a bit moot.

For clarifications sake, I believe Medieval Hungary is far more representative of hungary too, but it was entirely irrelevant at the time given the discussion was focussed on the huns relevance to hungary specifically.

As for the rest, i'm fully aware of the history of hungary with respect to the avars and such. However, this was a 3 line paragraph in a wider discussion where i thought thorough explanation of hungarian history wasn't needed from me at the very least.

Yeah, this is a good list, especially if Indonesia is represented by the Majapahit. Decent geographical and chronological diversity, and you get some good scenarios: Portugal-Kongo, Portugal-Brazil, Sioux-America, Britain-Zulu, Poland-Russia come to mind immediately, sure there are others I'm missing. Also, Brazil could have a carnival-themed UA, which would be cool as hell.

Oh, okay, sry then
I probably just jumped in the wrong place of that conversation
It seems we agree on everything then

Portugal and Zulu are pretty much given, considering they were heavily featured in previous iterations of the game.

Some other ones which I think might happen (or I think it would be cool):

Israel
Sioux
Goth

I would love to see the goths since they had a major imapct on european history after the fall of Western Rome.

Bring me the mighty Huskarl UU! :deadhorse:
