Guess the Map V: A Map is Worth a Thousand Words

Hmmm.... it doesn't match up with the French colonies in Africa...

My guess is that the black category is endemic to eastern Africa, with the map properties linking France and all her colonies - including the affected ones in the SE Africa - together under one heading.
I don't think that it's a political or cultural map because there are so few categories that are spread out over so many different nations. What's throwing me for a loop is the Old World/New World split (with a few exceptions).

Maybe some sort of radius of effect of an occurrence centered in the western Indian Ocean, different categories for time delays?

Wild guess: meteorite strike and projected severity of damage.

Yeah, I'd say as well that the "source" is East Africa, it might be related to France on the way of animals or humans (emigrants), that could also be why the old world has higher amounts than the New World, (there is after all a big ocean inbetween).

Some kind of sickness? Or a ethnicity?

Going by the purple color, and the fact that France is included, does this have anything to do with grapes? Production? Consumption? Import/export?

Is it a three tiered scale or is it three different categories?

I think France is dark because of its Indian ocean islands... This would mean that it's some brute number, rather than a per capita statistic, and also that it's directly geographical.

I'll take some guesses. Does it have to do directly with Madagascar? Or maybe with some particular plant or animal?

Well done. It's distance from Madagascar. Dark purple countries have a point < 1,000 miles. Next was <5,000 miles and then > 5,000 miles.

I had hoped France would throw people off, since Reunion is an integral part of France (I excluded territories from the map, or the UK would have been darker due to Diago Garcia).

Data came from http://www.daftlogic.com/projects-google-maps-distance-calculator.htm

Agh! I was so close!

Yes. Honestly had I read the thread before his answer, I'd've given it to you. But he said Madagascar so, you know, shut down everything.

Now, there's an obscure reference! :)

I think you might be exaggerating about the amount of people who recognise the reference.

For what it's worth, I don't think the reference is all that obscure. I mean, I got it :)

AND here's the next map:

Coloration goes dark is most, and lighter is least. China is first, and those parts of Africa and the Middle East are lowest (or none).
