Religion in Japan is... complicated at best. It's not uncommon there to practice multiple religions while identifying as atheist at the same time.

Oh, I know about the first part, but the second is new to me.

I also think that it's percentage of athiest population.

It is not quite athiesm. But it does have to do with religion.

Percentage of the population that regularly visit a place of worship? It would certainly explain Japan, given that a lot of their devotions are directed at household shrines.

This would make sense. The scale above the map goes from dark green to bright green so probably the brighter the country is the higher is the value of whatever this map is about. And in the case of atheism it would be the other way round.

Percentage of the population that says they believe in one or more Gods?

You got it, the Pew Research Forum's metric of religiosity.

Just so it's clear:

2: Maryland, Virgnia, West Virgnia, South Carolina, Georgia, Arkansas, Kansas, Iowa, New Mexico, Nevada, Arizona, Idaho, Oregon, Washington (State)
3: New York, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Oklahoma, Colorado, Utah
4: Alabama, Tennessee, Indiana
5: North Carolina, Michigan, Lousiana
6: None
7: Florida, California
8: Ohio
9: None
10: Texas

Is it death sentences? (this year I would guess)

No. Some of those states, like Michigan (5), don't have capital punishment.

Is it the number of cities with a population bigger than x? I do not know too much about population numbers in the USA so this could be far off...
Or for a hint, has it anything to do with number of cities that fulfill a certain criterion?

Texas' population is concentrated in many more cities than in California or Illinois.

3: New York, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Oklahoma, Colorado, Utah

And Kentucky, and Mississippi.

Something to do with some group of population?
