Handy 18 AWD small - Celts

Should we slot Handy now instead of me? I can't get to it until Saturday, and if he can go now since he was skipped before.
I will plan on playing Saturday morning.

Agree with the keep cities plan. Station troops outside the walls with a lone defender.

IHT: Swap entremont to settler. Other minor swaps.
IBT: Nothing going on.
Turn 1: Kill a pillaging spear with an army. We are really out of position everywhere.
IBT: Not much going on still.
Turn 2: Capture Giza, killing 2 spears. MDI kills LB. (6-0). Reg MDI dies to damaged reg spear. Vet spear kills redlined spear. (7-1).
IBT: LB trade with Egypt. We kill one lose an MDI. (8-2).
Turn 3: Kill 2 spears and capture avaris. Lose a vet knight to a reg LB. (10-3). Elite pike kills LB. 2 MDI kill LBs. Found Whiskey Mountain.
IBT: The English build copes. Lose an MDI.
Turn 3: Assualting out the pennisula, kill bab spear. Kill 3 LB's and a musket with MDI.
IBT: LB kills MDI. dang it.
TUrn 4: Kill 2 spears and 1 Musket. Lose 1 MDI. Raze El armana, so we can resettle 3 spots.
IBT: Not much
Turn 5: found Celtic Car Bomb. tasty idea. Kill babylonian spear. Unit costs are down with new foundings.
IBT: Lose an MDI. We are losing them quite quickly.
Turn 6: Raze Izbia, will resettle there. Get two slaves. Not too much going on.
IBT: Giza was recaptured by the egyptians, we were too overextended.
Turn 7: Found Beserker Ale on the Pennisula. Kill another Bab settler pair.
TUrn 8: Kill 2 LB's and take back Giza. Also kill some shipping there. Also lose 2 MDI, but capture alexandria and furs. It was worth the sacrafice.
IBT: Not much.
Turn 9: Found 18 y single malt scotch. Contact America. They are up everything and we declare war. We could have bought some maps, but I don't like trading.
Turn 10: Our armies are injured, but will be fine shortly. We are doing fine, just need to settle the large open area we have.

Handy18-03.jpg

Egypt has a very limited life span left, and we are going to take them down in the next 20. We also have area for 5 settlers
One settler in the south is heading to the tundra spot, it might still be on automove.

Everyone remember that our next army needs to be saved for pillaging the other continent. Don't load more than one unit into it.

I took a look at the save. Wow, we've come a long ways.
Great job everyone! :goodjob:

A few things I noted and some questions for the team.

1) Our research capabilities sucks. I will work on getting Courts and Libraries built as best I can. I know this is already in progress. I'm just saying that I will stay the course.
I assume we are going for Mil. Trad. next...

2) We haven't built the Herioc Epic yet. Entremont could do it in 8-9 turns. Do we want to hand build it or wait for a leader and rush it?
I think we should go ahead and hand build it. What say you?

3) I will turn the next leader into an army for pillaging the other continent. (assuming I get one)
Since we have Astronomy I can load 2 units into it and still get it to the other landmass in a caravel.
Do we want a knight army for mobility at the cost of reduced defense, or do we want a musket army?

4) I would like everyone's opinions on the following dotmaps.
First one is a standard CxxC and the next is obviously is looser in the West. Which one do you guys like, if any?

I won't play until I get some feedback.

my 2 cents

you are right, hand build HE is ok, it will be a long time until we get enough leaders, we still have the pentagon to rush as well.

I would starve all those ex Egypt towns, I looked at the save and they still grew. Settle as tight as possible for CxxC so we can milk for more science beakers.

A knight army would be preferred for pillaging capabilities.

And, yes go for Mil Trad of course

I agree with ThERat. I would use the first of the dot maps. I prefer the CxxC, HE hand built is fine, Take out Brighton, Looks like we need more workers and more irrigation.

Also if any town is size 6, I would suggest an Aquaduct rather than Market. That gives us the +2 unit support, and also starts it growing so it will reach full capacity earlier and give us more gold in the long run.

You have both confirmed my gut feelings.
I will play this in the morning.

Concur all way around.

Here is the save.

Inherited turn: Sakes alive, the corruption in our empire is frigging horrible!
Is Communism here yet?
Set Ex Egyptian cities that need it to a starvation diet, by setting scientists. This shaved 2 turns off of Metallurgy. Swap Eboracum to a duct. All the other size 6 cities building markets already had them. :goodjob:
Entremont is the only city building Knights and only one of 2 that has the shields to do it in a reasonable amount of time. After thinking more on this I decide to go ahead and swap the current Knight build to the Heroic Epic. There will probably never be a good time to do this, so let’s “git ‘er done!” (I hope I don’t regret the hell out of this in about 3 to 5 turns)

IBT: Egyptians drop a settler off at the southern tundra spot out settler was heading to.
Wish I could just kill it but we have no troops near by. America lands a MDI-Settler pair right on my light blue dot. I can’t reach them this turn. We are stretched pretty thin here, and it’s not going to get better anytime soon. ¾ of the empire is one shield suckland.

Turn 1: 460 A.D. Just positioning troops and healing units. Also starving Cleo’s old cities as needed.

IBT: 3 Port carracks appear at Bedeborough. This is bad. We don’t have the units to cover our cities. Everything is at the front. I could lose a city if these things are full. It’s potentially 9 units.

Turn 2: 470 A.D. Raze the new Egyptian city at the southern tundra spot. Healing the hurt army. Attack Detriot and kill a MDI. I could only get one unit there this turn. Still a spear there. Will finish it off next turn.

IBT: Those 3 Port carracks dropped off ONE LB. Unbelievable.
Kill an English cavalry on defense at Brighton.

Turn 3: 480 A.D. Attack Brighton. Still a hurt spear there. Didn’t have enough units. Captured Byblos. All 5 citizens are resisting. Autoraze Detriot.
Hieraconpolis starved down to size 1, set to grow again. Quell a resistor at Busiris. If I can get the last resistor quelled next turn I will rush the remainder of the settler build there.

IBT: Nada
Continued next post due to image count.

Turn 4: 490 A.D. Raze Brighton and get a worker for our trouble. Kill Egyptian settler pair and promote a knight to elite. Captured Memphis and we now have the Hanging Gardens. I also got a leader. Built a army and loaded 2 knights into it.

Handy18-490AD-Leader.jpg

IBT: We get the Pentagon popup.

Turn 5: 500 A.D. Found Lezoux in the southern tundra. Moved all the units out of Memphis so we don’t lose them when it flips. Letting the units heal.

IBT: Couple of potential pillagers move in.

Turn 6: 510 A.D Kill the pillagers and move some units up.

IBT: Nada

Turn 7: 520 A.D Kill a couple of strays and move towards the prize, Thebes. HE completes in Entremont. It's back to building 4 Turn Knights.

Handy18-HeroicEpic.jpg

IBT: Nada

Turn 8: 530 A.D Moving units.

IBT: Lost a caravel to a galley without scratching it.

Turn 9: 540 A.D On the doorstep of Thebes. Moving army to other landmass.

IBT: Nada

Turn 10: 550 A.D Attack on Thebes, kill some units without losses, but I don’t have enough.

IBT: Nada
Turn 11: 560 A.D. I am taking an extra turn because I want to have some impact on this game. :)
Pillaging army is landed on the other continent. Thebes falls and we own the Pyramids and MoM
I also popped a second leader. The Heroic Epic paid off!

Handy18-560AD-Leader.jpg

Summary: Leader is still in Thebes with movement left. I DID NOT complete this turn.
There are a couple of LB that can be killed my Memphis and an elite MDI to whack one of them with. You can make another army and get it out of Thebes this turn.
Rushing the Pentagon is tempting as well.
There are 2 knights sitting in Beserker Ale waiting transport to join the army I just dropped off. I should have built another caravel. My bad.
Settler is in place to found light blue dot.
Entremont needs a grass irrigated. It’s losing 1 food per turn.
I got a lot of irrigation and roads done this round, but there is plenty left to do.
I haven’t gone through and adjusted cities for happiness due to the HG. I figured it would flip back and I did not want to have to go back thru them several times.
I can’t believe that city hasn’t flipped yet…

Getting 2 leaders and pyramids is really very nice. Now we have to decide what to do with the second leader. I vote for another knight army - first we need to pillage other continent now and it doesn't really matter how many units are in the army. I think we should stop starving egyptian towns, i guess egypt will be gone in a couple of turns. With pyramids we can have lots of scientists in all that corrupt land pretty soon and that will help us research at a decent speed. We should think about infrastructure now so that we can build cavalry fast enough. I don't think we shoul invade other continents before we have lots of cavalry, but just pillage everything there. Unless we find another resourseless civ of course :).

Just looked at the picture: the problem with fast knight builds that Matt mentioned seems to be because our population is too low. Cities around the capital are at size 6-7, which is too small. We shoul build workers in corrupt towns and merge them. Now with new luxes and HG we can have higher population. Also we won't need MDI any more propably, so we can use them for MP.

I agree with Obormot. I would use the knight armies to pillage the snot out of everyone.
I would also merge in some if not all of our native workers at this time.
