Handy 18 AWD small - Celts

:goodjob: Greebley, not that I expected less. Lucky we have such a short anarchy period. Switching to communism later on will be no issue. Now that we got the GL, we should have a real shot at this game. Plenty of room to settle.

I would try and aggressively settle towards egypt. Stuff looks pretty good.
Concur on the temple builds.
I really think this one has a chance.

Pre-fight – A little MM, but not much. We don’t have any offensive units in the core. How do we keep Egyptians from pillaging?
IBT – Learn Invention from the PORT and ENG.
1. 330 BC – Kill three Egyptians, and at Shurrpuk – lose two GS. We don’t have any artillery. Order up some trebs. (3-2)
2. 310 BC – March on Lisht.
IBT – Babs drop off a settler pair near Egypt.
3. 290 BC – Kill two Egyptian archers. At Lisht, kill two spears and…

@ Buto – lose a GS, so I retreat. Short rush a few trebs. (7-3)
4. 270 BC – Healing.
5. 250 BC - @ Guarda – Kill a spear. @ Lisht – Kill an Egyptian archer. (9-3)
6. 230 BC - @ Guarda – Our GS is redlined but…

With eight potential attackers outside Lisht, I abandon it. Kill a Bowman. (11-3)
IBT - A Port pony is dropped off.
7. 210 BC – Ratpurdum is founded. Kill the pony. Attack an Egyptian spear and…
Handy18_-_210_Leader.JPG

Vercingetorix heads south to form an army. (13-3)
IBT – Another Port pony is brought to Bugsy’s Glue Factory.
8. 190 BC – Kill the pony. Form a army. (14-3)
9. 170 – Kill a bowman that was dropped off. Kill two Egyptian archers. (16-3)
IBT – A Portuguese galley sinks a Babylonian galley. How nice of Henry.
10. 150 – Kill three Egyptian archers. @ Shurrpuk – Bombard and kill one defender. Move a settler into place for the choke city. (20-3)

Here is the situation in the NW:
Handy18_-_150_BC_NW.JPG

Shurrpak has one yellow lined defender. Build the choke at red circle and build a fort as indicated.

Here is the situation in the north:
Handy18_-_150_BC_NE.JPG

Red lines indicate last tracks.

Our core needs more work. We need one more shield at Entremont and at several other cities. We could use a few more workers and trebs.

Our first army is a good sign. A gallic army is really annoying with its 3 movement points, so we should be able to really hose the AI now.

Very nice Bugsy. :goodjob:

Pre-Turn
well I did a crazy thing you might say, attack wounded spear with elite pike (after all they might rush another spear) and Shurrupak is razed for 1 slave [1-0]
MM to try and cut down builds and get more money, Entremont goes for 2 turn pikes rather than wasteful MDI for the moment
there is a 3rd lux in the north, we need to get there

IT Babs land another settler pair next to our pike, Egypt starts SunTzu
we get mono from GL

1. 130BC
I see that gunpowder is known by 1 Civ already
build Choke point, beat one archer of the huge stack [2-0]

IT now an English settler pair comes into view as well
our wounded GS draw all those archers
foolish Babs settler pair moves towards Choke

2. 110BC
bomb Babs down to 1hp and we got 2 more slaves :)
kill another Egypt archer [4-0], do not attack English spear since its on a hill

3. 90BC
kill a Babs LB at Sippar and promote MDI elite
found Food Galore in the North, reveals an Egypt archer nearby
kill settler pair for more slaves, kill 2 spears with army [8-0]

IT GL gives us gunpowder

4. 70BC
bad news, can't seem to find any salt
kill 2 spears inside Pithom and raze town
knock spear to 1hp and kill it with elite at Ratpurdum
raze Sippar killing 2 spears with MDI's [13-0]
the land in the west does not really look like a continent

IT archers approach Ratpurdum

5. 50BC
kill English LB that came from the west
knock down another spear at Rat and kill it with MDI to promote elite
kill 1/4 archers at Rat
kill the archer that was exposed founding Food Galore and [17-0]

handy1850.jpg

IT archers do not attack but pass and another huge stack is on the doorstep
English finish Sun Tzu, at least we do not face vets form Egypt

6. 30BC
form army, it will be another fast GS army
use vet GS to kill an archer, then load, use army to beat 2nd archer and retreat to town
found Bugsville north of wines on hill
Entremont is now at 20spt and can churn out 2 turn MDI's [19-0]

IT Ratpurdum seems too well defended since 7 archers decide to pass it

7. 10BC
slugfest at Ratpurdum starts, killing 6 archers  [25-0]
move 1st army towards Egypt

IT Portugese land a LB near Bedeborough where we have little defense
a lot of Egypt units running about
we get the FP

8. 10AD
kill 2 more archers with elite but no leader [27-0]

IT another LB is landed

9. 30AD
kill 2 English LB's in the west, found Romeomium
kill 2 spears in Norwich which was founded in the east and autoraze it
kill one of the LB's that occupied our gems
there is another stack of 3 spears and 5 archers next to Rat
kill 5 units of the stack
raze Abydos killing 3 spears and netting 6 slaves [40-0]

IT LB attacks MDI on mountain and kills MDI, first loss this round :( [40-1]
Egypt archers try and pass Rat for pillaging

10. 50AD
while taking some archers out, redline army
take out 1hp LB with MDI [44-1]
found Obormotia in the east

we have another settler in the east, we can come up with a dot map to better fill land
I have aggressively expanded, we better build up some mil units to be able to defend, the armies are wounded and
one is escorting 6 workers back.
Lugdunum can be set to 15spt

we have 19 cities currently

the northern battlezone, amry has 6 slaves underneath
handy1850b.jpg

our empire as it is now

Looks good Rat. I really like that I got my own city. :D
I threw together a dotmap.
Proposer order; orange, yellow, red, mauve and teal.

I don't understand - is there actually something to the west of us, or is it just a small peninsula? It looks like a peninsula.
And i have a question about egyptian culture: is it really so big? Maybe we could capture cities instead of razing?
As for the dotmap - it looks good, but i would settle the towards egypt first and only then build those coastal cities.

it's just a peninsula, we should settle it as well

Obormot, it's easier said then done to settle towards Egypt, they got plenty of units since they build cheap archers (yes, they have no iron, horses and salt)

We need to settle the coast to keep AI from settling there as well

The two backfill spots are to easily pull settlers from the back side and just fill them up.
Egypt has at least 3 great wonders, and is religious and most likely has lots of temples up. We will probably raze all of their cities that lack wonders. Expanding towards egypt takes lots of defenders, and can only be done fairly slowly at the moment. Based on my AW and lurking AW experience, Egypt will fold in about 40 turns, but we should still be slow and cautious with our advance.

Got it.

Looks like excellent shape with the Rat Pack and Bugsy's Boys out there desling some serious death.

Will settler to the east first for all the reasons adduced above, and one of my own. Nice commerce benefit from the coast (we are not SEA but you still get two gold pieces from a coastal tile) with fewer worker turns and smaller garrisons.

I would consider settling along the ridge line heading NE out of Ratpurdum. That will deny cover to the Egyptians pouring south.

It is hard to say whether it is just a peninsula or more continent.

It is hard to say whether it is just a peninsula or more continent.
Reason why I am pretty convinced that it is a peninsula is simple. during my turns, very few units came from there, in fact only 2 LB's from that English town. Babs kept on sending galleys. We are playing deity, if it were a connection to another continent, there would be units pouring in...

Maybe there is an easy hop from the other continent, might actually be worth to send over a pillage army to wreak some havoc early on. Maybe we should use one of the next armies to do so. We have now close to 20 cities, that's 5 armies already, if we get that many. We should use one to pillage over there.

By the way, there is no salt, we have to find it somewhere. Also, we must make sure Egypt is deprived of resources, they got no iron and horses, never let them hook up the iron there in the north, so I agree settling towards that direction.

Hmm... It does sound like a peninsula. The other possibility is that the civs are at war and our defense is better than the other civs in the choke city. In that case they will not attack the choke, but go for then other enemy instead. The peninsula scenario is more likely though.
