Have you ever been in Finland?
What do you know about Finland?

I live in Finland so I'm interested to find out what people here know about my homeland.

No I havent. I know your history pretty well, but then thats about it. Though you do seem as nice persons, and good graphics makers in the civ3 community;)

I have… A long time ago, during a summer far far away… The Finnish summer is very beautiful, I recall. :goodjob:

What is Finland, never heard;)
I have lived over 14 years in here (hey wait, that's how old I am:) )

I have driven through northern Finland on the border to Sweden on my way to Oslo.. Dunno if it counts, but Helsinki and other finnish places are on my list :)

Nice architecture
Well educated people (not the silly dutch nonsense educational system), from "backwarded" to smart.
Forrests
Nice landscape
driving/F1
Nokia
6 million people
non-indo-european language, related to hungarian

My uncle lived on Åland when I was younger, so we went there a couple of summers. Åland is more Swedish though then Finnish, so I don't think it should count.;)

Ido hope I visit Finland some time though. I know a guy in Turku/Åbo...

This must be the best thread ever :)

*Another Finn raising his hand*

Perfection's post makes me bring up one issue that pops up every now and then... I don't think Finland should be classified as "Scandinavian". Scandinavia is the peninsula with Sweden and Norway on it. Denmark and Iceland can be included, this is mostly due to related languages and all the Viking stuff those countries share historically.

Finland is a "Nordic" country, not Scandinavian. I kind of like the distinction, since Finland does differ from its other Nordic pals, even if the differences are not obvious on surface today.

I'd appreciate other Finns' thoughts about this issue, though.

Yes I have been- ten lovely days in Lohja, Helsinki, Turku, and Rovaniemi. YOurs is the cleanest, most new looking infrastuctured country I have ever been in and the people are among the most honest... the night life is a bit dull but the wild life is beautiful and the area around Rovaniemi in especial was breathtaking. Lovely women too, if quite frustrating...

Finland is quite alright. Especially Helsinki.

Let's clear up some misconceptions brought up in this thread though. As Huck said, Finland is a Nordic country, not a Scandinavian one. Then again, so is Iceland. Denmark, Sweden and Norway are Scandinavian.

Second, funxus, Åland is everything but Swedish. And wishes to remain so, thank you very much.

I know its cold in Finland, and it has a lot of lakes and every house has a sauna (spa?). And they have people in the north who are called Laps and they breed reindeers. The capital is Helsinki (in Finish) of Helsingforst (in Swedish - as they ruled there for a long time, untill it was conquered by the Russians)
It is about 300.000 km2 big and has over 5 mln inhabitans. The flag is white with a (light) blue cross. It joined the EU in 1995.
It has a female MP. The country is mainly covered with forests and nokia and mika hakinnen come from Finland.

Just some standard foreign country knowledge :)
