Heckler's Veto FTW?

Yeah, I've been ignoring all of the flag code posts because while it is guidelines, it is not law. Not sure why a lawyer would be pretending like it should be adhered to as such. There's a thing called free speech that trumps it.

There are not very many free speech rights at a school. Just ask the 5 conservative Supreme Court justices who ruled against the free speech rights of schoolchildren on the same day they ruled for the free speech rights of corporations. Surely there is not a free speech right to violate the Flag Code at a school, advisory as that Code may be.

Shouldn't we be imprisoining these people for sedition?
The "law and order" crowd usually ignore that aspect of the flag code unless it suits their own agenda.

They typically seem only interested in imprisoning those who burn or otherwise use it as a form of protest against the government. So much for their consistency in arguing that it is a "freedom of speech" issue.

Ah. So you are a proponent of free speech then? You see the school as imposing on the freedom of the kids who were defiling the US flag?

It is only when you defile the Mexican or Irish flag that you have crossed the line. Defiling the U.S. flag is just fine.

The last time Congress tried to pass the flag desecration amendment in 2006, it was rejected in the Senate by one vote (66-34) after it already had the required 2/3rds vote in the House.

The Simpsons episode "The Day the Violence Died" includes a spoof of the children's television series Schoolhouse Rock where an anthropomorphic amendment banning flag burning sings that the problem lies with "a lot of flag-burners who have got too much freedom" and that he wants to "make it legal for policemen to beat them," as there are "limits to our liberty".

"You cannot wear the American flag." "Do we have school uniforms now?" "No, you just cannot wear the American flag on May 5th. Wear it some other day." "Oh, so we have school uniforms on May 5th?" "No, we do not have school uniforms, but the flag is offensive on May 5th." "How is the flag of America offensive? Ever? In America? "To people that live here? The actual official flag of our country that flies over most all government buildings across this land? Offensive?" "I cannot explain that in a way that actually makes sense, so I am just going to wave my hands and scream 'racial' instead." "And you're a school administrator?" "Yes, yes I am."
What you're literally telling us, bhsup, is that you think it's okay to bully people so long as you are wearing the flag while you do it.

They weren't accused of doing anything other than wearing a flag t-shirt. If wearing that is all it takes to bully someone, they have worse problems than a shirt.

How many hecklers does it take to veto common sense? In this particular case, it was some of the parents of four bigoted "thugs" who dishonored the American flag.

Certainly you have a more sophisticated understanding of social cues than that.

Wearing a flag t-shirt is not bullying by any definition of the word that doesn't seek to cheapen it.

Only if t-shirt is made in China. Bangladesh

Not necessarily . . . waiving a Bible around will suffice also. Better yet if in combo.

Hey, I was just standing on the street corner with my middle finger extended toward a wounded veteran in a wheelchair. People around me got really upset at me. I don't understand why I can't simply stretch my fingers. What is this world coming to? :crazyeye:

Really . . . a veteran in a wheelchair is doubling down on his hand in the public till.

Not really pertinent to the point I was making. Veterans who have sacrificed and put their lives on the line for what they and their loved ones at home believe in is a complex issue and maybe something for another thread. Don't you think?

Those threads are not as fun with certain parties currently MIA from CFC. Plus, the temper from some qaurters in response to mere trolling on the subject is something to behold.
