I'm just trying to see what the rest of you think about how much of the map this setup will cover and if there is an area with a huge gap that could be filled, or if two civs are starting too close to one another. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also if you can can you reccommend a cs setup? Edit: Also TSL isn't as important for cs, and thanks for any help I'm kinda inexperienced.

1. Assyria (me)
2. America
3. The Shoshone
4. The Mayans
5. The Inca
6. Brazil
7. Elizabeth
8. France
9. Germany
10. Russia
11. Spain
12. Rome
13. Greece
14. The Ottomans
15. Egypt
16. Morocco
17. The Zulus
18. Mongolia
19. China
20. Indonesia
21. India
22. Siam

The European civs are mighty squashed. I'd swap one out for either Polynesia or Japan.

Edit: Actually, the Zulus have no real nearby competition in Africa. And that is huge. So swap a Euro for Songhai.

I like to go for a blend of TSL and random with the CS. You get some surprises that way, as well.

I'd replace Germany with Austria or Poland since they start a little bit further away from France and will help prevent Europe from getting overcrowded quickly.

IMHO I would swap morraco for songhai and germany for poland. I also think Siam and Indonesia will be very close and would swap it for Japan.

Morracco might screw Spain up and something needs to be filled to keep russia out of the east.

I play 22-Civ TSL games also, and through long testing (read: a couple games) I use the following civs:
Americas:
1) Iroquois (covers eastern North America, and with Hiawatha, it really will be covered with massive city-spam...)
2) Shoshone (western North America)
3) Maya/Aztec (Maya if you want a more peaceful, religious Civ; Aztecs for a more warmongery game - whichever one you pick will cover Central America.)
4) Inca (western South America)
5) Brazil (Brazil)
Africa
6) Carthage (North coast of Africa; Dido's also enough of a warmonger to spark some wars to keep things interesting around the Mediterranean.)
7) Songhai (For western Africa)
8) The Zulu (Africa: The Warmonger's Continent.)
9) Ethiopia (The warmongers need SOMEONE to pick on!)
10) Egypt (If he starts wonderspamming, sic Shaka, Dido, or Askia on him.
Europe
11) Spain/Portugal/France (They'll cover the Iberian Peninsula and Western Europe; just depends on which leader you prefer!)
12) England/The Celts (British Isles; depends on if you want a religion spammer or an insta-denouncer...)
13) Sweden (Why not? They cover Scandinavia.)
14) Germany/Denmark/Poland (Eastern Europe)
15) Russia (To cover Russia, of course.)
16) Byzantium/The Ottomans (covering Asia Minor)
Asia
17) Arabia/Babylon/Assyria (covering the mideast)
18) India (for India, and also you want someone to start throwing Nukes around, right?)
19) China (for China)
20) Mongolia (to go after China)
21) Siam (for Southeast Asia)
22) ...and then there's the wildcard. I recommend Polynesia, Indonesia, or Persia; any of them will fill in gaps in the world.

I really like cpm's list. If I play TSL, I generally use this set-up; there are a few that I change however.

North America
1. Iroquois
2. Shoshone
3. Aztecs
Pretty straightforward; I don't like to use the USA for TSL and I think the Aztecs will be more relevant throughout the game than the Maya. The Mayan's unwillingness to expand makes them easy targets for the Shoshone and Inca.

South America
4. Brazil
5. Inca
Again, not many choices. I will say, the mountain range definitely helps Brazil; they'll be left alone enough to get set up and be a late-game challenge.

Europe/Western Asia
6. Portugal
7. England
8. Germany
9. Sweden
10. Russia
I think Isabella would probably be the best for the Iberian Peninsula, but I can't stand playing against her. The English fair much better than the Celts in my experience (the Celts sometimes don't even leave the island). France is too close to Germany, though you can switch between them. I usually like using the Huns since they'll sort of keep the Barbs under control. Poland, Greece, and Byzantium get honorable mentions, but just missed the cut.

Asia
11. Huns
12. Mongolia
13. China
14. Siam
15. Indonesia
16. India
I like to put Indonesia in because they tend to fill in that island chain (and are the only Civ I've seen successfully set up a multi-city colony in Australia). I've switched China out for Korea and that was pretty interesting to see, but it just seems weird to not have China in. Korea was a powerhouse though.

Middle East
17. Persia
18. Arabia
This was the hardest choice for me. I think Persia is one of the better overall AI, so that's why I included it. Arabia is also a pretty strong Civ, plus he will fill up the whole area between Africa and Europe. While I'd like to include Babylon, I feel like the AI doesn't play them too well and is much better with the two above

Africa
19. Carthage
20. Songhai
21. Ethiopia
22. Zulu
I always debate whether or not I want to put Egypt in or not. If I do, I'll cut Indonesia and Arabia to add Egypt and Assyria.

Polynesia can be used (possibly in place of the Indonesians), but I usually don't see them do much. They try to colonize the Western US and Australia sometimes, but usually get their Settlers (Aus)/Cities (US) taken.

I usually see the Ethiopians, Arabians, Siamese and Iroquois pick up a religion. The last couple are toss-ups between Germany, Russia, Songhai and the Aztecs.

Some good suggestions guys :)

One question: I've played a couple of games on this map, letting the civs get chosen randomly. Indonesia has pitched up in both these games. Once Gajah Mada started in the Congo and the other time in Siberia. Any idea why?

Are you sure you're using the most up-to-date Y(n)AEMP maps?

No I'm not sure. Will check it out. I was under the impression they would update through the mods section in the same way other mods do.

Those are good wild cards. For a more cramped east Asia, add Japan or Korea instead.

Or, you could leave scandinavia open for settlement and add 2 asian wild cards. They've a lot of room anyhow. Problem could be that Russia nabs it and not east Europe or the British isles though ...

I don't recommend adding in Japan (they get stuck with one city and, as the AI wigs out, no expansion opportunities). Korea could be added in, but I find that they end up just getting crushed pretty fast by either the Mongols or China. As for Europe, you definitely need to have Sweden in to cover Scandinavia (as neither Russia nor Poland/Germany/Denmark actually will expand to cover it) and you really need someone in the British Isles.

Alright thanks guys some great ideas here. I remember the last TSL game I played before my civ hiatus for whatever reason I thought Persopolis was fairly far away from Babylon and well..... Babylon didn't last to long. I'm gonna give a few of these a try and I'm also going to try the YNAEM expansion glassmage recommended sounds interesting. Civ 5 has definitely been a welcome change from the Rome II fiasco.
