Heroes

I still have not seen any hero units or been offered any way to build any (545 AD, but somewhat behind - only recently into Ancient)

Yeah, they dont start till after Ancient Era begins, then they are available as EldrinFal said only through Cultural buildings.

I am still waiting for people to say how they want this done, either have the Hero die once and be gone, or let it live by making a stronger hero Each Era, but same Hero, or just let him normally upgrade to a BIGGER unit?

I onyl have access to two cultures (Iroquoi and Huron) - is there any way to see what heroes they give rise to and what buildings I need for them from the Pedia?

It's hard to let a hero (or good unit in general) go :)

I think it would be easier on you not to have to create several versions of each. But sometimes it takes a long time to find a city that can make the culture to produce a certain hero. Maybe that is the whole point of culture buildings though.

I've been playing my current game over a week now and have gotten into the Classical age without having a hero available to build. I've only had a few cultures pop up as options to make and those so far haven't offered heroes to me.

Regardless, as very unique and powerful units, I think if they die, they die. It makes them even more valuable that way. Once their strength becomes moot compared to other units, they can make their unit-ending building. It would be cool if somehow their legend lived on though in stories or plays. Maybe a Myth building for that Hero. Or upon the hero's death, the Civ gets a special Tech that allows a statue or Myth or Poem be created specific to that hero? (Just some ideas)

Well right now those only the Iroquois can produce a IROQUOIS_MOHAWKARCHER, the other has no Hero yet but only produces :culture: I have like 30 more Elite Heroes to do, but since i haven't been feeling very good, i just haven't gotten around to them, sorry everyone.

So is the IROQUOIS_MOHAWKARCHER a hero? Doesn't look like it from the XML I can see. If not are you saying that neither culture I can access has ANY heroes at all (in which case hardly surprising I don't see any!).

I presume every culture will have an equal number of heroes before we make the release with heropes in (V18 presumably?

Its the OLD UU, its now called Elite Heroes. See first post. And any culture you get, YES you can get the Elite Hero from them also, as in real life training as i did in the Military, i trained in Germany with their machine guns, "grease gun" etc and was awarded a ribbon for that and was officially in the German book as a Certified user of those weapons for Germany and the USA.

As for getting them correct before v18, no, because i want alot of ideas and suggestions of what is right and what is wrong and to be changed etc.

So to clarify. The answer is 'no you cannot ever get any heores with those 2 cultures' is that correct? In which case I guess I won't be helping with any hero testing since I'll never see one (1600 turns in on this game, not about to give it up lightly)

Wrong, the Iroquois CAN get the Elite Heroes automatically. When you get the correct tech, just look up the Mohawkarcher in the Civlopedia, i know thats in there. It should say how many you can have and more info.

Also, when you get more cities built, you will get more cultures and then more HEROES per culture, each depending on the tech/culture requirements needed and when they arrive, some aren't till modern era, all depends.

I'm not understanding I don't think. In post 1 on this thread it says:

Elite Units
- National Unit
- Limit 15 (can be rebuilt if they die)
- Can get special elite promotions (not the same as heroic).
- Example: Samurai

Note the bit I have bolded. So if heroic promotions are not available to the units I can get from cultrue Iroquoi how do I get an actual hero unit that can have those promotions? (with this culture). Are the actual heroes not culture-linked or something?

OK, in THIS case, i do NOT have a regular hero in-place yet, again sorry. But is in the works to be placed in-game when i am feeling better, i hope that clears up more, sorry for the confusion.

Like i said i have around 30 more Elite heroes to add alone, not counting the others that i will be placing in-game, so will probably end up with around 100 total, so far, and counting.

EDIT: See this is one of the reasons you MUST pick out a good place to place your cities now, if you want more Heroes ingame. It all depends on the vicinity of what the Hero/cultural building(s) needs to be built

Understood, but bear in mind we don't all play on maps as 'bountiful' as the one you tend to play on. I typically find 2-3 cultures is about all I can possibly get on the maps I normally play on (within reasonable distance of me)

No, I did not. That was already in the Python code there but there is nothing like that in the DLL. Heroes are normal units so there is no special hero info.

OK, the problem I was having with reading the code is that it has some of my stuff and some other stuff that suggested that someone willing to work with C++ had done something.

I did have both working together but the hero screen would jump you to the unit index. I will look at it after trying to figure out the CTD I a getting and the subdued animals to be engineers - how I forgot that I don't know as it was my idea:blush:

Which is one reason I am thinking of adding "cultural units" that you can (rarely) capture when you take and enemy city. Or be gifted from your vassals by the Topkapi Palace.

I have managed to get the hero index and entries to display but I still get the problem of the wrong index being displayed once you click on a unit in the hero index. Should I post it to the SVN?

Edit I have found the jump/link mechanism that is causing the above problem. Now I just need to figure out a way to fix it.

Yeah go ahead, i was getting too much heat from others the way it currently is.

GREAT concept... I will have more ideas for this but for now will keep my focus on balance issues. Just wanted to say its nice to see a whole new realm of exciting development taking place here.

OK, I have now experienced some of these units and have a couple of comments.

Those that give golden ages are very useful. The others I build just to stop others getting them and then I delete them. The latter is because when I have built them they are too weak against even normal units.

Maybe the golden ages from heroes are too long. Or maybe it was just because I had them all in the one era and ended up with 300+ turns of golden age.

The "special" limited to 15 are interesting. I tend to use them as boarder patrol.

This is from a builder style of play.

OK do me a favor here guys when talking about "Heroes" say which "kind" of Hero your talking about.
Hero Units - - Only one can exist and once it dies it cannot come back.
National Units - - Limited amount of units per civ.
Elite Units - - Limit 15 (can be rebuilt if they die)

Ever consider adding a thread for suggesting heroes, and great people?

I know this sounds a little science-fictiony, but I would vote for 'Doc Brown' as name for a great scientist. Maybe he could be in an alternate timeline or era? I would also vote for Carl Sagan.

For a great hero: Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, and Martin Luther King, Jr. could be great pacifist heros.
