I just had a German city completely surrounded by floodplains with farms to get massive pop and GP farm. It got up to 35 population, and it was a huge pain to keep the city's happy/health ratings up. 17 out of 20 squares were 5 food/1 commerce plots.

I just had one of the best game's ever in Civ 4. It was a long drawn out game, since lately I've been extremely busy in real life, and finally finished it. I played as Bismarck with the Germans, and from the start until around 1850, was complete peace for me. Then I had Montezuma, Alexander, and Qin Shi Huang all gang up on me, using each other's railroads to send masses of units at my empire, but I fended everything off with Panzers and Marines. I struck back at the Chinese to take some of their land and weaken their lead.

All the while, Huayna Capac is building a spaceship. I came back in the end by switching off of Police State and going to Representation and using all my high pop cities to research and use lots of specialists to catch back up in tech. I barely won a space race against Capac in the end.

I was playing OCC on Monarch.

39 population.

I was taken over by 4 dogpiling nations in the modern era though, because I chose to make a Permanent Alliance with a weak nation who got taken over too fast, even with my tanks as help. =/

I got to 40 using merchant specialists (ended up with 19) to generate great merchants to feed more specialists, etc.. Got bored in 1992 (normal) or probably could have gotten more.

I haven't done it myself, but surely one could abuse great merchants with their +1 food to create an arbitrarily large city.

Don't have anything to do with the weak. Ever.

I got Washington DC to 37 once on a massive flood plain with corn, sheep, and pigs. The game lasted until 2045 when I won a space race.

I had Beijing in a recent game at 22 when the next largest city in the world was 10...I was thinking the Chinese had some sort of population explosion characteristic. I had to burn off some bodies with slavery to get down to a manageable 15.

I'm up to 27 in Washington and 24 in Boston in the game I'm playing now. It's Y2K and all 5 other civilizations I started against are still around. I disabled the space race, so I'll definitely go over 30.

I got a city up to 43 in my last game. Standard map size, Pangeae, tropical, low sea level. It was uber sweet.

If you want to max food. Go Plains map on tiny with 18 civs. One start I had 2 pig 2 corn, 1 rice 1 sheep and 2 deer. I didnt play it out, but you get the idea.

I've never had a city get over 20

In my last game the comp had a size 28 city on a hige map when it was rare to see anything in th double digits. Great Merchants got me 5500 gold each going there.
