HOF Challenge Series III Discussion

I'll just add one detail to Sun Tzu Wu's explanation: it's possible to "accidently" play a challenge-eligible game, but unlikely, since the challenge stipulations always include "No vassals" and sometimes "No tribal villages."

I wouldn't necessarily say its likely to "accidentally" Play a Challenge Series Game. On the other hand, I wouldn't say its unlikely either due to the "No Vassals" or "No Tribal Villages" settings:

While many Players do play with Vassals, a large number of players play with "No Vassals" to avoid AIs that "collect" Vassals and other AIs that spin off Colonies, which is a permanent Vassal.

Also, while more Players do play with "Tribal Villages", there are some Players who prefer to not give the AIs the advantage of "Tribal Villages", especially at higher levels were the AIs often start with 2-3 Scouts and the Human Player starts with 0-1 Scouts. In some Deity Games, I've seen AI Scouts contact nearby Tribal Villages whereas I've been unenable to contact a single Tribal Village; so why give the AI such a huge advantage, when one can just say No to "Tribal Villages"?

What time does the HoF Challenge Series III end today?

In other words, what is the cut-off time for HoF Challenge Series III game submissions?

Congrats Iggy... I am glad Sun Tzu Wu protected you from the chelem though! :D

You had a great space game. As to Sun Tzu Wu, it did not seem pragmatic to compete directly with his specialty.
Congrats Iggymnrr for winning the 3rd HOF challenge!
Seems Sitting Bull is pretty strong for beating up the AI
AIs are meant to be beaten upon.

Congrats :king: Iggymnrr :king: for winning the 3rd HOF challenge!

I concur. Winning 8 of 10 Games is especially impressive indeed.

I was also surprised by the effectiveness of Sitting Bull as well. Of course, Dog Soldiers are more effective against melee units than any other type, so you want the AI to have both Bronze Working and Iron Working plus Iron, so the AI will build mainly Axemen and especially Swordsmen that are cut down by Dog Soldiers like they were paper dolls. I shall keep Sitting Bull and Dog Soldiers in mind, when ...

RRRaskolnikov, you had an impressive Immortal game yourself that prevented the chelem as well!

Well, I suppose you mean that iggymnrr didn't have much chance of beating my Religious Deity Quick Speed result; I'll grand you that; early Religious Deity Quick Speed games are very hard to win due to the difficulty of getting +8 diplomacy and 3/4 of the religious vote with so few turns (for example, one needs 25t of OB for just +1).

iggymnrr, you were wise to not even attempt to beat my game. ;)

As to Religious Leader Diplomatic Victory being my specialty; I do believe I'm getting the Conquest itch or may extend my Domination victories, break further into Space Colony, Diplomacy and Time or get back to my favourite, Cultural. Then there's a dabble into Space Race with Warlords just get one of those too.

Seriously, iggymnrr, your comment reminds me that BtS is far more than just Religious Leader Diplomatic Victory and that I've been playing Religious games so long that it appears to be my specialty; indeed it has become my specialty ...

Again, iggymnrr, congratulations on your impressive 8 of 10 wins in Challenge Series III. :goodjob:

I look forward to Challenge Series IV.

I need to thank those that run the gauntlets. It was playing in a couple of those that got me interested in the HoF. Thanks Denniz for your efforts. This is the name I always seems to see. My memory is bad but Ozbenno's name crops up too, so thanks.

Meanwhile I just learned a new word "chelem." Got to look it up.

Nah, this was a first game but I never got time for another attempt. Over-expanded a bit and science was crappy till 500 ad. A not so good game imo. It created motivation for further games though.

Hum I googled chelem and I get "slam" in english... I thought the word was the same, my mistake :p

The usual term for this in English is "grand slam" == "grand chelem" in Français, so your use of "chelem" in this context was perfectly clear.

So we prevented a Grand Chelem de Série de Défi de HOF III.

I started with "Grand Chelem de" and added a web translation of "HOF Challenge Series III". Does my phrase translated into Français look close to being correct?

I failed to mention this in my previous post. A quote of which gives some context ...

If I hadn't been determined to defeat shulec's excellent game, he would have been the clear victor in Challenge #10.

Makes sense. My orignal guess was something like "hegemony."

Close enough that I got you (I would translate it as "le grand chelem à la troisième série (or série III) de défis du HOF") :goodjob: That's one of the thing I like with CFC: you learn something new every post... a tip about civ, a word in english (or sometimes finnish!), a bad joke... priceless

Cheers,
Ras

Thanks for the correction! I'm learning far more than I expected. Maybe my Finnish is not so bad? :)
